Okay, the Wild Flag is pretty good.

wild flag has sorta grown on me but still less than the sum of parts imo

this was one of the last songs to be removed from my ballot - love the parallel vocal and guitars in the chorus. The handclap section is a bit smarmy...in general this band feels a bit like old people play-acting rock stars, then again they are actually bona fide rock stars so they deserve some slack.

I agree that the guitar in this sounds fantastic

although to be fair nothing else i've heard from S-K has thrilled me like one beat does so maybe that album was a one-off

now if you'll excuse me i'm going to listen to the magic city for the 500th time

I quite like that Wild Flag song but I suspect it's just as pure comfort food.

Wild Flag = Janet/Carrie from Sleater-Kinney, Mary from Helium and Rebecca from The Minders.

the outro is sweet though - the "we love the sound, the sound is what found us" bit, that's when it kind of takes off

Wild Flag kinda drives me nuts. Not enough to ruin my memories of Helium, but I never liked Sleater-Kinney and this is too much of that for me.

I donated my copy of Dig Me Out to the public library a couple years back. I did not like Wild Flag. (I think I may actually hate indie rock more than lex, but I am not as vocal about it as he is.) I did like S-K live the one time I saw them.

LOVE prog helium, that shit kicks ass to this very day

(not that Helium ever went full-prog, but they definitely went in some sort of medieval direction that I didn't want to tag along for.)

Another GGD track. I honestly thought Adult Goth / Chinese High were the big tracks off of this album. Think seeing them live at Primavera in the summer was what sealed the record off as classic.

I'd have picked "Adult Goth" if I'd voted for a GGD track, but this one's great too.

mindkilla is a good track, better pick for trax ballot than the other one that placed

'Mindkilla' is the first song in this countdown I really like since Quik, and yet, seeing it here makes me die inside a bit

xp, Mountains by Mary Timony is very good. I did rather like Helium's Dungeons & Dragons period and it's not a million miles away from that.

I def think I'm gonna check out some Mary Timony solo stuff; The Magic City is a rad record!

I think if they play London any time soon, I'll go. Festival was alright, but they were on a bit of a weird stage and I reckon they'd put on a much more interesting show at a gig.

"mindkilla" is superb - the interpolation of "mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird" works so well - love the distortion on her voice there

GGD are amazing live, i saw them at xoyo last year and it was superb
