Okay, the Wild Flag is pretty good.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
wild flag has sorta grown on me but still less than the sum of parts imo
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
this was one of the last songs to be removed from my ballot - love the parallel vocal and guitars in the chorus. The handclap section is a bit smarmy...in general this band feels a bit like old people play-acting rock stars, then again they are actually bona fide rock stars so they deserve some slack.
― skip, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
I agree that the guitar in this sounds fantastic
― Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
although to be fair nothing else i've heard from S-K has thrilled me like one beat does so maybe that album was a one-off
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)
now if you'll excuse me i'm going to listen to the magic city for the 500th time
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
I quite like that Wild Flag song but I suspect it's just as pure comfort food.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
Wild Flag = Janet/Carrie from Sleater-Kinney, Mary from Helium and Rebecca from The Minders.
many xps
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
the outro is sweet though - the "we love the sound, the sound is what found us" bit, that's when it kind of takes off
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)
Wild Flag kinda drives me nuts. Not enough to ruin my memories of Helium, but I never liked Sleater-Kinney and this is too much of that for me.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:52 (fourteen years ago)
oh are YOU the other guy who likes helium more than s-k?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)
thought i was the only one
she's good in that show i prefer that
― Cashmere Combabe, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)
Me and cad in similar taste shocker.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)
finally some good guitars in this poll
― V79, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:54 (fourteen years ago)
:D
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:54 (fourteen years ago)
Helium was way better before they started progging out all the time.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)
yayyy 'romance', this song's a delight
― ban opinions (reddening), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)
I donated my copy of Dig Me Out to the public library a couple years back. I did not like Wild Flag. (I think I may actually hate indie rock more than lex, but I am not as vocal about it as he is.) I did like S-K live the one time I saw them.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
LOVE prog helium, that shit kicks ass to this very day
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
(not that Helium ever went full-prog, but they definitely went in some sort of medieval direction that I didn't want to tag along for.)
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
Quasi > Helium > S-K IMO
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
ewwww no
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
I don't think there are bad, or even lesser, Helium records.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:57 (fourteen years ago)
ez do you know anything about mary's solo records? any good?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)
so far this stretch has held nothing for me other than quik :/
― lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
I've never heard Mary's solo records.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)
yeah me either. maybe i will do that.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:00 (fourteen years ago)
Very indie rock stretch today. Nice compliment to the very dancey stretch yesterday.

the 'mary timony band' stuff w/ the dudes from medications backing her is really dope
― some dude, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:02 (fourteen years ago)
High fives!
xpost
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:02 (fourteen years ago)
yessssss, finally something I voted for
the chorus is murderous
― V79, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:02 (fourteen years ago)
oh cool i will check that
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:03 (fourteen years ago)
Gonna have to track those Timony records down.
I'm glad to see our Mary band of brothers is growing!
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:03 (fourteen years ago)
Another GGD track. I honestly thought Adult Goth / Chinese High were the big tracks off of this album. Think seeing them live at Primavera in the summer was what sealed the record off as classic.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:03 (fourteen years ago)
I'd have picked "Adult Goth" if I'd voted for a GGD track, but this one's great too.
― Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:04 (fourteen years ago)
mindkilla is a good track, better pick for trax ballot than the other one that placed
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:04 (fourteen years ago)
this was real good livebut they peaked too early with house jam second
― nathey, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:04 (fourteen years ago)
'Mindkilla' is the first song in this countdown I really like since Quik, and yet, seeing it here makes me die inside a bit
(bcz 'Adult Goth' was my #1 pick)
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:05 (fourteen years ago)
this is the first one i voted for. love iiiit. they get better with every record.
― Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:05 (fourteen years ago)
loved the live version from P4k Fest, longer & jammier outro ruled
― V79, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)
xp, Mountains by Mary Timony is very good. I did rather like Helium's Dungeons & Dragons period and it's not a million miles away from that.
― Mohombi Khush Hua (ShariVari), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:06 (fourteen years ago)
I def think I'm gonna check out some Mary Timony solo stuff; The Magic City is a rad record!
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
I think if they play London any time soon, I'll go. Festival was alright, but they were on a bit of a weird stage and I reckon they'd put on a much more interesting show at a gig.
― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:07 (fourteen years ago)
"mindkilla" is superb - the interpolation of "mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird" works so well - love the distortion on her voice there
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 16:08 (fourteen years ago)
GGD are amazing live, i saw them at xoyo last year and it was superb
