lex, you might like the Battles album - it's really not a far stretch from the GGD record.

have totally failed on hearing the new Battles (& old Battles for that matter) so happy to rectify this :)

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

hey, what a great bass sound at the end, love this!

V79, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

who is voting for this stuff

tbh, it's only 7 people out of 122. they just really, really liked it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

'Ice Cream' is almost certainly the worst thing that Matias Aguayo has ever been involved with.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

i heard the first battles album and no just no, unlistenable, thought it was a joke at first

oh wait i've seen this before... *xposts*

haha come on, the Battles album is lex kryptonite; about the only way it could be less lexish would be if every track featured John Lydon shouting Mariah lyrics over it and ad libbing about how terrible and base they are

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't like the Battles album. Voted for The Go! Team, having previously gone right off them after the first album. The Yuck track is pastichey in a good way.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

go team was poor battles was worse

Cashmere Combabe, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

Agree that I prefer the first Battles album and that Ice Cream is the only one I really dig off this new one.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

battles album is a total grower. ice cream i think is just okay on the lp but really kills live.

Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

Voted for 'Ice Cream', though as already pointed out the album is one to skip.

Okay fair enough, but at least listen to Ice Cream - it's not got the squeaky voice (dropped after first album) and not as blatantly rocky.

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

Battles are all tight and jerky (going by the few songs I've heard), don't see where GGD comparisons come in.

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

meh I kinda feel like the last three songs are really mediocre, and I much preferred the safe-for-work Go Team video to the other two

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

p sure dog latin is trying to drive lex to suicide

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:40 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha

Latest one is more groovy and spaced out than the first one which is, yes, very tight and jerky.

i really want to hear this

Aesop Rizzle (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

oh, I still haven't heard Wild Flag. This is the Matador femme allstars supergroup right?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

dig the guitar on this a lot.

pandemic, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

oh shit, this is great

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

I liked the wild flag at first but then some music started and ruined the atmosphere

Cashmere Combabe, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

I literally had no idea who Wild Flag was until I saw Carrie Brownstein at the beginning of that video

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

hmm i tried the wild flag album and was a bit disappointed; i don't hate it but it doesn't really thrill me like the best S-K - i find the melody here a bit basic, and it just makes me want to listen to one beat instead. relistening now and haven't changed my mind.

better'n the last few though

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, the Wild Flag is pretty good.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

wild flag has sorta grown on me but still less than the sum of parts imo

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

this was one of the last songs to be removed from my ballot - love the parallel vocal and guitars in the chorus. The handclap section is a bit smarmy...in general this band feels a bit like old people play-acting rock stars, then again they are actually bona fide rock stars so they deserve some slack.

skip, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

I agree that the guitar in this sounds fantastic

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

although to be fair nothing else i've heard from S-K has thrilled me like one beat does so maybe that album was a one-off

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:49 (fourteen years ago)

now if you'll excuse me i'm going to listen to the magic city for the 500th time

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

I quite like that Wild Flag song but I suspect it's just as pure comfort food.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

Wild Flag = Janet/Carrie from Sleater-Kinney, Mary from Helium and Rebecca from The Minders.

many xps

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

the outro is sweet though - the "we love the sound, the sound is what found us" bit, that's when it kind of takes off

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:50 (fourteen years ago)

Wild Flag kinda drives me nuts. Not enough to ruin my memories of Helium, but I never liked Sleater-Kinney and this is too much of that for me.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

oh are YOU the other guy who likes helium more than s-k?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

thought i was the only one

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

she's good in that show i prefer that

Cashmere Combabe, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

Me and cad in similar taste shocker.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

finally some good guitars in this poll

V79, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

:D

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

Helium was way better before they started progging out all the time.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

yayyy 'romance', this song's a delight

ban opinions (reddening), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

I donated my copy of Dig Me Out to the public library a couple years back. I did not like Wild Flag. (I think I may actually hate indie rock more than lex, but I am not as vocal about it as he is.) I did like S-K live the one time I saw them.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

LOVE prog helium, that shit kicks ass to this very day

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

(not that Helium ever went full-prog, but they definitely went in some sort of medieval direction that I didn't want to tag along for.)
