ILM'S TOP 77 TRACKS of 2011 (Los resultados!)

Better than anything by the group proper: Ian Parton of The Go Team composed a song last year for Japanese idol group Momoiro Clover. It was released on labor day and is basically a 70s socialist protest song re-imagined as idol pop. Lyrics are amazing: http://youtu.be/Krj3dwKEaSk

Wow, my #1 and #2 in consecutive order.

"Get Away" was probably too pastichey for most, especially for people who grew up with Dinosaur Jr etc, but it hit the sweet spot for me. I was somewhat post-grunge and the guys in Yuck probably are as well - for us the early '90s alt scene represents acquired knowledge about a particular atmosphere and sound rather than real memories. I love the high guitar hook. The buildup to the "I can't get this feeling off my mind" chorus is extremely effective - it takes a long time to get there and they do a good job with volume along the way. The track is more complex conceptually than it initially lets on.

"Buy Nothing Day" manages to be both symphonic/epic and totally unserious and fun. It suffers from being a BIT too long but that's about it.

Love The Go Team track, guess I'm one of the few people that loved the album too. Really didn't expect to like anything by them again after such a boring second album.

also didnt really like the Yuck song, agree with V79 that the hook wasnt really there, and the video pissed me the fuck off

otoh it did remind me to brush up on my Eric's Trip. thanks for that Yuck!

Was really looking forward to the album after hearing this track but was left disappointed by it. Love this track tho.

Battles album was disappointing but this track was solid.

"Ice Cream" is a song that I admire more than I actually like. It's good at what it does but I don't feel an emotional connection to it the way that I did to songs on Mirrored (particularly "Race-In", "Atlas", "Ddiamondd", "Leyendecker", "Tij")

I thought that "Africastle" and "My Machines" were much better tbh

Didn't like the Battles album. Voted for The Go! Team, having previously gone right off them after the first album. The Yuck track is pastichey in a good way.

Agree that I prefer the first Battles album and that Ice Cream is the only one I really dig off this new one.

battles album is a total grower. ice cream i think is just okay on the lp but really kills live.

Okay fair enough, but at least listen to Ice Cream - it's not got the squeaky voice (dropped after first album) and not as blatantly rocky.

Battles are all tight and jerky (going by the few songs I've heard), don't see where GGD comparisons come in.

meh I kinda feel like the last three songs are really mediocre, and I much preferred the safe-for-work Go Team video to the other two

I liked the wild flag at first but then some music started and ruined the atmosphere

I literally had no idea who Wild Flag was until I saw Carrie Brownstein at the beginning of that video

hmm i tried the wild flag album and was a bit disappointed; i don't hate it but it doesn't really thrill me like the best S-K - i find the melody here a bit basic, and it just makes me want to listen to one beat instead. relistening now and haven't changed my mind.
