The design meeting for that Small Faces cover must have been something:
Designer 1: "So the cover's gonna be a record on a turntable, but the pickup's an engine."Designer 2: "Eh, it's missing something."Designer 3: "What if the needle was gouging a tear in the record?"Designer 2: "Hmm... Good, but it needs to be edgier."Designer 1: "How about this, there's blood coming out of the tear!"Designer 2: "Excellent! Now let's go and do some more cocaine!"

Oh yeah - 70s albums with terrible visual puns featuring pictures of records xp

That's so lazy. In fact, 'records are your best buy' would have been a better title and image.

Came out in 1978 btw, so bonus points for the double pun, albeit two useless ones.

I love these album titles because like - - is the idea to convey that the band are just a bunch of cut-ups, some regular goofy guys who might do well as sitcom guest stars even while they make you boogie? So put 'em on and give 'em a spin! Or something? And yet somehow all it conveys to me when flipping through the dollar bin is "well, this looks boring and inessential as hell, I can safely skip that one."

there's also something slightly reactionary but post-60s about it, it's like "We don't really have a revolutionary bone in our bodies, but we have this vague sense that we're supposed to act like nothing matters anymore"

Caravan were still doing really shit album titles in the 21st century btw, they have not lost it yet:

Yeah, definitely, it's very "No concept album to be found here, y'all! Just tryin' to provide some plain 'n' simple entertainment!" This doesn't apply to the prog versions of course.
Also it seems like record companies saved their laziest graphic designers and worst cardboard for records with these titles, they just always look so shabby and awful. Exceptions abound - that "Cunning Stunts" cover isn't bad aside from the title.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 June 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

gimme most of the album titles itt over pretentious nowadayz shit like Marni Stern or Fiona Apple's infamous "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You'll Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You Know That You're Right"

I like album titles where you go "Is that...a real word?" but you don't tell anyone and you're too embarrassed to actually look it up.
