^ Gene Vincent - I'm Back And I'm Proud
― Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:05 (twelve years ago) link
I like the Camel cover, as it's title is the punchline of a joke.
― insert 2012 appropriate display name here (snoball), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:13 (twelve years ago) link
I don't get what the puns are in the last two examples?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:13 (twelve years ago) link
Status Quo and Gene Vincent, that is.
Gene Vincent: terrible pun on I'm Black And I'm Proud (Gene Vincent is white btw)
― Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:19 (twelve years ago) link
Not all of these are puns, Tuomas, most of them aren't
― Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago) link
Ah, okay. Stupid me! What about the Status Quo title? Were they putting down some rival band called "The Heat"?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:24 (twelve years ago) link
"If You Can't Stand This Heat" try Throbbing Gristle instead
Hard to come up with a more boring album title than this:

― Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:25 (twelve years ago) link
What's with all the people on the left? Are they his new company?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:26 (twelve years ago) link
And does "new band" refer to the shining wristband he wears?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:27 (twelve years ago) link
Status Quo: it's the lame visual gag and of course the other half of the title phrase would be ...Get Out Of The Kitchen, so it's a picture of a stove. Which is really crap and humdrum and not very dangerous at all, which pretty much sums up Status Quo imo.
― Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago) link
Ah, okay, I didn't pay attention to the image, I though the pun was in the title.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago) link
not very dangerous at all*
*if used in the correct manner
And the hob looks a bit like a turntable, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, a bit
― Charles Kennedy Jumped Up, He Called 'Oh No'. (Tom D.), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:29 (twelve years ago) link
I think it's supposed to look like a record (well, it is a spiral)
― Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:30 (twelve years ago) link
xxp let's just say that you wouldn't want to put your hand on Status Quo and then turn them on...
― insert 2012 appropriate display name here (snoball), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:30 (twelve years ago) link
And is it mounted on the top of a speaker cabinet?
― Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago) link
In partial defence of the Quo cover:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/35/Spiralscratch.jpg/220px-Spiralscratch.jpg

That's a pretty stupid place to put a stove!
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:32 (twelve years ago) link
It's so they could boil a kettle with the sheer heat of their boogie-rock

The design meeting for that Small Faces cover must have been something:
Designer 1: "So the cover's gonna be a record on a turntable, but the pickup's an engine."Designer 2: "Eh, it's missing something."Designer 3: "What if the needle was gouging a tear in the record?"Designer 2: "Hmm... Good, but it needs to be edgier."Designer 1: "How about this, there's blood coming out of the tear!"Designer 2: "Excellent! Now let's go and do some more cocaine!"

Oh yeah - 70s albums with terrible visual puns featuring pictures of records xp

That's so lazy. In fact, 'records are your best buy' would have been a better title and image.

Came out in 1978 btw, so bonus points for the double pun, albeit two useless ones.

How about at least two layers of wrong?

Atomic Rooster - In Hearing Of
― earlnash, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:21 (twelve years ago) link
I love these album titles because like - - is the idea to convey that the band are just a bunch of cut-ups, some regular goofy guys who might do well as sitcom guest stars even while they make you boogie? So put 'em on and give 'em a spin! Or something? And yet somehow all it conveys to me when flipping through the dollar bin is "well, this looks boring and inessential as hell, I can safely skip that one."

there's also something slightly reactionary but post-60s about it, it's like "We don't really have a revolutionary bone in our bodies, but we have this vague sense that we're supposed to act like nothing matters anymore"

Yeah, definitely, it's very "No concept album to be found here, y'all! Just tryin' to provide some plain 'n' simple entertainment!" This doesn't apply to the prog versions of course.
Also it seems like record companies saved their laziest graphic designers and worst cardboard for records with these titles, they just always look so shabby and awful. Exceptions abound - that "Cunning Stunts" cover isn't bad aside from the title.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 28 June 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

gimme most of the album titles itt over pretentious nowadayz shit like Marni Stern or Fiona Apple's infamous "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You'll Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You Know That You're Right"
