I don't know man, are you listening to ambient for innovation and excitement? Because I think you might have the wrong genre for that.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, I've been to Indio, if I lived there I would probably be making music that sounded like that.

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

would you find this more appealing if it were called music for butterflies? they're just moths with prettier clothes.

I'm an ambient man, have been so for 10+ years. The opposite of "innovation and excitement" - which is what I guess you are getting at in your definition of ambient - does not make for (good) ambient, per sé. At least not in my book. Ambient can be unsettling, unnerving as anything else. Ambient itself shines all around the spectrum of what most people call "ambient". From great snoozer-ambient to unsettling, scary ambient.

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

Butterflies don't eat your clothes. At least I don't think they do. Although that would explain a lot…

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

I think moths wear their outfits with pride, and rightfully so

future debts collector (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry man, cheap joke. I've just recently started getting into ambient, and I dig it a lot, but I guess I have trouble recognizing when ambient is cliché. I'm still at the stage with that genre where my critical insight basically comes down to "I like this" or "I don't like this."

oh i should have mentioned this...my friend's band Dallas Orbiter

http://www.dallasorbiter.com/

did a thing in 2011, where they released a free digital "single" each month...a-side was new original, b-side was a cover

i think they have a unique sounds...i dunno, kinda of an odd yet poppy space rock...like somewhere between a less-chopsy walt mink and can or something?

the originals are all great and the cover selections are cool and diverse, include songs by Blue Oyster Cult, Al Stewart, Brian Eno, an unreleased song by a former member of Punchdrunk (Punchdrunk's rhythm section became the original Hold Steady rhythm section), Glen Campbell, Baader Meinhoff, Love & Rockets, John Cooper Clarke, Bombay Sweets, The Zombies

Think when I downloaded the free Cosmic Dead record last year it gave me Three Dimensional Tanx as a recommendation (or maybe it was vice versa). That was a very good day.

the new elephant micah album is name your price for the digi version

http://productofpalmyra.elephantmicah.com/releases

fitzroy institution (electricsound), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

Weird. Pre-ordered the vinyl of the Elephant Micah before Xmas, & at the time, rather than getting the whole thing to download, they only gave you one track (& that was the one that was already free on the site). Thought they were just trying to stop people spreading it around before the release date, but now on release it turns out it's Name Your Price thing anyway. I must be missing something about this strategy.

Wandering Boy Poet, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

last year I wrote 242 songs as part of a song-a-day project. going on holiday and moving house put a stop to getting 365 but anyway... these are my favourite ones. http://kidsteel.bandcamp.com/album/the-year-of-magical-thinking

Gamera died for our sins (J3ff T.), Friday, 3 February 2012 06:07 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks!
Start with "could you please stop raping me" - not for the politics (tho most of her stuff is political) but because it's gnarly.

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 3 February 2012 11:56 (fourteen years ago)

Also check: "Iona" and "flow my tears" off the top of my head

Some of this stuff is more "experimental " than noise, per se

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 3 February 2012 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

Got that Verma stuff a while ago. Very good.

flog this poster for moderation (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

I had hit up the band on MySpace and they seemed to imply that this was going to get a physical CD release too; as much as it goes against the grain of this thread, I really really really really hope that comes to pass...

flog this poster for moderation (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

Whoa, that Peter Gordon song IS amazing! Thanks so much for that, definitely never heard it before.

Also, really excited for that ST37 link. Thread is gold.

Sonoi: most recent band of Adam Busch, formerly of Manishevitz (early Jagjaguwar band, truly great):

http://sonoimusic.com/album/tropics-of-holland

Really cool, atmospheric rock. Occasionally a little "out" but always stately and well-crafted. Both Verlaine and Robert Wyatt influences evident (to me at least).

grandavis, Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

I like how the Dirty Feathers has a "do not play on your shitty laptop speakers" warning.

http://darksun.bandcamp.com/

are you ready for a little spittle? (electricsound), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:58 (fourteen years ago)

Never thought to look up Abunai! on Bandcamp. Great band, sadly the band member's post-Abunai! material has been pretty much ignored. Joe had a really good record out on Camera Obscura & Brendan has had a couple of great outfits & recorded a solo album or 2, but don't think any of it has seen the light of day yet.
