i'd be very surprised if one of the songs i have voted for will feature. ilm seems to have become a parallel universe without any overlap with my musical taste. weird.

No no you got it all wrong. I was born in California from Spanish parents and I'm currently living in Mexico. Is the joke that I'm feisty every now and then? ha.
― Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:45 (fourteen years ago)
hooray, stuff i voted for made it!
'love you like a love song': this slipped off my ballot at the last minute, but i'm glad it made it in! i played it for my sister and she was convinced the chorus was "i love you like i loves a baby."
'hell on heels': the harmonies and the ambiance really clicked with me, even though i agree that, as an album-opener, it promised something that the rest of the album was not. my sense is that some think that's a good thing, like maybe the pose they're striking in this song is a bit hackneyed? but i genuinely dig it! tbf my familiarity with country is mostly limited to things ilx stans for, so i might be enjoying things that others consider tired tropes.
'bizness': voted for this because i thought it's where the consensus would gather, i've grown to love other tracks more (esp. 'my country'). tune-yards TOTALLY DOES IT for me, the everything + the kitchen sink production doesn't annoy me because it's still strongly melodic, and i don't mind the yawp (tho i think there's too much focus on the yawp in the critical conversation, she has a lovely gentle voice that gets a lot of album time too).
'moonlightpeople': i actually prefer the other nominated track 'dizzy' to this one ('dizzy' is tonally weird, it starts off buzzy and ominous and then veers into sweetness), but i got caught up in a barbara panther rush and ended up voting for both of them. my favorite discovery of the voting period, hands-down.

Never heard A$$ before... this is pretty incredible - almost a footwork influence creeping in. Dare I ask who's the producer on this, and what else should I check out?

Thanks. I have to give credit to fauxmarc for introducing me to it and knowing more about it. (Also I have to admit lex caught one of those Erick Rincon songs before I heard anything about the whole genre, but then again I'm not a professional critic or even a blogger.)
I've enjoyed the various mixes I've downloaded (generally at fauxmarc's prompting) more than "Intentalo," although it's okay and I voted for it.
Back to the rest of the list.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:15 (fourteen years ago)
Though lex's comment is a little funny considering I even had "tribal guarachero" in my "salsa" thread title last year.

Does the beginning of this Selena Gomez song borrow from some other obvious and famous song or does it just give that illusion?
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:46 (fourteen years ago)
That Tuneyards screenshot is kind of like what I do when I have a really bad sinus headache, no exaggeration.
― John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:49 (fourteen years ago)
I voted for a bunch (well, out of a smallish ballot) of dance tracks this year (thanks mostly to the Spotify tracks list), but in a lot of cases I have no idea how big a thing they were on ILM.
I think Barbara Panther is kind of like Tuneyards (if more Bjorkish, on that tracks anyway). Not into either.

ffs why don't people bother to vote? it's not like the timing of this is a surprise or the various threads haven't been obviously at the top of new answers for ages. and then they come in here and complain smh

What I've Lost is like Super Bass in that it was previously released but then rereleased last year to make a bigger impact. It counts, although I think Paper Planes actually made the top five two years running.

Listening back, the ICP definitely sounds better in January than at the start of last summer. And this is one of the Barbara Panther songs I remember liking.

if the steffi track made it, i wonder if deniz kurtel's "the l word" will?

(which i thought was (even) better)
Fine with the verses on Coming Home but good grief the chorus.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 08:57 (fourteen years ago)
so far loved 3ballmty and the Lucossolus of the stuff I hadn't heard. THANKS People who voted for them.
comment re: Tuneyards embarrassing furious masturbation so OTM
also agree Coming Home is ruined by Skylar Grey and would pick nearly every other track on the album over it.
― Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 09:47 (fourteen years ago)
I like the Tune-Yards song, although it's the only one I know by her. I hear it as a sort of bluesy wail, which is kind of cool - also like the androgynous quality of her voice. It's all good to me.

yeah it's been really good, eclectic and full of shit i've not heard of which is the way i like it. just hope as we get further to the top it isn't full of megabore indie hits and kanye/drake related stuff

3ballmty trk is fantastic, the pick of the stuff I hadn't previously heard.

can we just replace video games with 'jason derulo - fight for you' when it appears? really bummed i didn't nominate it :(
― nathey, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:08 (fourteen years ago)
In case anyone was wondering: the breakdown of the ballots was 77 weighted, 24 unweighted and 21 mixed.
Also, I've just run the user stats and they underline the point that was already made about votes being much more spread out this year. This year's highest hivemind score (average points for tracks on a ballot) is 344, which would have put the voter in question at 9th in last years poll. Nobody has more than 16 tracks in the top 77 (last year the highest was 21).
On the other hand, the top 3 tracks this year have more points than last year's winner so it hasn't all gone crazy. Anyway, it's hard to posit a trend with just two years' information.
― Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:53 (fourteen years ago)
I don't think there have been as many absolute locks for the list as previous years, so no surprise it's more spread out. I mean, we know full well that Video Games, Countdown, Super Bass etc will turn up, but beyond maybe 10 or so absolute bankers it's wide open.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)
i found that was the case with my own ballot too - beyond a few bankers it was even more of a toss-up between, literally, 80-90 others. lots of the ones i've raved over here i didn't even vote for (but if i'd voted on another day i would have), like steffi/john talabot/selena gomez/tuccillo/big sean. actually i'm not sure any of my actual votes have shown up yet despite cosigning the majority of tracks so far!
― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 13:01 (fourteen years ago)
Tracks I went unweighted, 23 of the 25 tracks have absolutely zero chance of making the 77. 1 is a lock for top 10 at least, 1 i've no idea about
Albums i went weighted, as there were only 4 - My number 1 album I only heard after scanning the nomination list, I haven't actually heard it properly yet

(I probably have five songs on my ballot that I'd guess are 'locks'; two of which I'm half-expecting to show up today...I know it's pretty greedy of me but I was really kind of hoping to have a few more besides those place, but you never know, I suppose...)
(and now to Facebook..!)
