MikoMcha, my past ILM poll experiences for me is that my favorite discoveries lurk in the 78-150 range, which is an excellent reason to hang around to clean up after the party.

Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

...

MikoMcha, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

OK, been catching up with the YouTubes since I got home, 'Families' and 'In a Hole' are my favourites of the stuff I didn't already know.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

I love "What I've Lost" but it's a 2010 record for me and I think actually came out initially at the end of 2009?

So far I voted for Selena and Invisible Conga People, but generally pleased with this list so far.

Tim F, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

Here's the (in progress) Spotify link again, btw

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

i mean really the benoit and sergio i loved was boy trouble but nobody cared about that so. i don't think it got nominated but i'm not sure.

judith, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Going through the tracks on the playlist so far—only 15 of the 17 are available :( —any notion that the results are "samey" is kind of baffling.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

Well I'm guessing the "samey" is more in terms of genres represented more than actual "sound" of the songs. I mean, similar complaints if we hit a long run of indie rock songs in a row.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

Oh wait, the Mogwai is available in the UK if someone wants to drop it in the playlist (even though US'ers won't be able to hear it).

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

Also love "midnight people" but I think that's an older track

Dan S, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

I was just talking about a patch of dance songs, not the results in their entirety

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

I've got the images down through #41 made at this point. Gonna be another coupla busy nights in photoshop!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

None of my selections have featured, but I still think this is fantastic list so far. Although I did vote for a different Locussolus track. This is so much more refreshing than the usual shit.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

i voted for 'walk & talk' cuz it was (an albeit v early) 2011 release. also cuz i think its p rad

i was a preteen blogger (Lamp), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

I nommed the Invisible Conga People track but I think I didn't vote for it because I thought I would be the only one interested in it. Glad to know I was wrong but bumping my head for not voting for it.

Also nommed and voted for the 3BALLMTY song. It's been an innescapable tune in Mexico throughout the year... you could hear it pretty much everywhere from the clubs to the hot-dog stands in here.

Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

They must be pretty giant in latin music circles (at least on the pop end), because I see a whole lot of their stuff come through here at work.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

As for songs I've never heard before so far I love the production on the Barbara Panther track but wish her vocals were more concealed in the mix. Her voice is the least interesting thing going around.

Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Moka so far those are my two favorite songs that I hadn't known about beforehand xxp

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Moka delivers the goods.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

for real

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

xxxpost: Yeah they've pretty much conquered the latin market through internet. Erik was one of the pioneers on the 'tribal' scene (where the ridiculously pointy boots come from and it became a sort of meme and cultural curiosity on 2010).

Glad you've liked my selections :)

Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, would agree with DAM on those tracks. Moka always has the best taste, though.

emil.y, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

steffi was my no.1, i mostly voted for dance stuff and it seemed like a more suitable candidate for 'best record of the year' than some of the other less uh assertive tracks on my ballot

enjoying the list so far

jabba hands, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

Annie Clark talking about the song and doing a nice solo version of "Surgeon" here: http://www.avclub.com/articles/st-vincent-discusses-and-performs-surgeon,64467/

Famous porn scenes like "shake that bear" (Phil D.), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

this is great so far. nothing i voted for has appeared yet but im loving the tunes so far. a nice mix of stuff so far and mostly tunes i havent heard either. i would definitely have voted that 3Ball track for sure.

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

"In a Hole" is really hitting the spot right now...dayum!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

generally I don't pick up tracks after the fact when putting together a ballot but, had I heard "In A Hole" before submitting, I would have voted it really high

Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

Had forgotten how good that Gang Gang Dance track is. And if I'd managed to do a tracks vote, I'd have voted for Selena Gomez too.

Big love for the visuals for the countdown from here too. Gonna listen through to all of these, lots of stuff I haven't heard at all.

Yeah Yeah Bohney (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 23 January 2012 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

It's been an innescapable tune in Mexico throughout the year... you could hear it pretty much everywhere from the clubs to the hot-dog stands in here

I thought you were Spanish?

Girl I want to take you to a JBR (jaymc), Monday, 23 January 2012 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

She is. But she lives in Mexico. *avoids certain running joke*

The Reverend, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:00 (fourteen years ago)

So far Big Sean/Nicki is the only one I voted for. Most of these I haven't even heard of and I'm suddenly worried about anything beyond like a few obvious things on my ballot showing. :/

The Reverend, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

resident advisor review of benoit & sergio - what i've lost from november 2009

http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=6872

fwiw i voted for it

flopson, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

oh wait sorry nevermind--i voted for "walk & talk"

what i've lost shouldn't even have been nominated

flopson, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

Knew I should have repped for "Principles" in the campaigning thread, oh well.

etc, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:20 (fourteen years ago)

man all the benoit & sergio songs that were nommed are sweet

river, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:21 (fourteen years ago)

It looks like Benoit & Sergio's  "What I've Lost" was released twice, once on the self-titled 12"  on Thesongsays in 2009 and as part of the "boy troubled"  ep on DFA in 2011. So doesnt that make it valid ?

Dan S, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't voted for any yet. Heard of/like the Selena, tUnE-yArDs, Pistol Annies, Big Sean, Diddy-Dirty Money and 3BALLMTY, but still. A lot of stuff I didn't even know existed, let alone was popular.

Need to listen to a lot since some of it looks promising. But nervous about my ballot, for sure.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

that's why i didn't say anything when it was nom'd, but it was reason enough for me not to vote for it, that and "walk & talk" is awesome.

xpost

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 23 January 2012 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

Well they we're both in my top five or six so I'll be happy if either one shows up

Dan S, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

*avoids certain running joke*

Ha, I appreciate it.

Girl I want to take you to a JBR (jaymc), Monday, 23 January 2012 23:34 (fourteen years ago)

i'd be very surprised if one of the songs i have voted for will feature. ilm seems to have become a parallel universe without any overlap with my musical taste. weird.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

No no you got it all wrong. I was born in California from Spanish parents and I'm currently living in Mexico. Is the joke that I'm feisty every now and then? ha.

Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

hooray, stuff i voted for made it!

'love you like a love song': this slipped off my ballot at the last minute, but i'm glad it made it in! i played it for my sister and she was convinced the chorus was "i love you like i loves a baby."

'hell on heels': the harmonies and the ambiance really clicked with me, even though i agree that, as an album-opener, it promised something that the rest of the album was not. my sense is that some think that's a good thing, like maybe the pose they're striking in this song is a bit hackneyed? but i genuinely dig it! tbf my familiarity with country is mostly limited to things ilx stans for, so i might be enjoying things that others consider tired tropes.

'bizness': voted for this because i thought it's where the consensus would gather, i've grown to love other tracks more (esp. 'my country'). tune-yards TOTALLY DOES IT for me, the everything + the kitchen sink production doesn't annoy me because it's still strongly melodic, and i don't mind the yawp (tho i think there's too much focus on the yawp in the critical conversation, she has a lovely gentle voice that gets a lot of album time too).

'moonlightpeople': i actually prefer the other nominated track 'dizzy' to this one ('dizzy' is tonally weird, it starts off buzzy and ominous and then veers into sweetness), but i got caught up in a barbara panther rush and ended up voting for both of them. my favorite discovery of the voting period, hands-down.

ban opinions (reddening), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 00:12 (fourteen years ago)

xp no, the deferred joke was about jaymc, not you.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

Never heard A$$ before... this is pretty incredible - almost a footwork influence creeping in. Dare I ask who's the producer on this, and what else should I check out?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

Been at jury duty today. 512 messages. You psychos.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

That's only 30 messages per track so far.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:09 (fourteen years ago)

that's a lot!

some dude, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

i need more music like this in my life. where the hell were yall talking about it on ilm last year and why wasn't i told?

― tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, January 23, 2012 12:34 PM (15 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

_Rudipherous_ has been talking about tribal guarachero for a little over a year. so, read his posts i guess?

― flopson, Monday, January 23, 2012 10:51 AM (7 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Thanks. I have to give credit to fauxmarc for introducing me to it and knowing more about it. (Also I have to admit lex caught one of those Erick Rincon songs before I heard anything about the whole genre, but then again I'm not a professional critic or even a blogger.)

I've enjoyed the various mixes I've downloaded (generally at fauxmarc's prompting) more than "Intentalo," although it's okay and I voted for it.

Back to the rest of the list.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

Though lex's comment is a little funny considering I even had "tribal guarachero" in my "salsa" thread title last year.
