I like that slightly odd scratchy guitar on the St Vincent track. But not particularly moved by any other element of it.

i feel like this was such a good year though that it kindof dilutes the pool. like i voted for a lot of stuff that was massive for me that i kindof realise now might not be on the list at all.
idk seeing 'in a hole' place makes me p hopeful for some other stuff that we might have both voted for
― i was a preteen blogger (Lamp), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)
also: "Whirring" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Surgeon"
at least on first listen
xp dog latin otm; there's a clip of the Formidables playing a 7+ min live version of Whirring where the last few minutes is just the guitarist girl on her hands and knees fucking with the knobs on her effects pedals
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)
<3 3ballMTY. glad to see in a hole place, can sort of see nickb's stott/blake comparison but icp have way more of a groove than what i've heard of those two. played this track to death this year. the i want it remix is too rich for everyday listening but imo it's important that such things exist
― ogmor, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)
I voted for 'What I've Lost' as well (really quite high actually) but never thought of it as something with any consensus behind it. Hopefully I was wrong and it will place after all (it's the only Benoit & Sergio track where their prissy Paul Simon side really works).
I hated most of the St Bernard album but that's because when I first heard Surgeon I thought it was really lovely and was hugely irritated by the constant dicking around on the rest of the album.

i'm thinking this will definitely be true for me. great year for dance music, but not a whole lot of consensus from what i could tell. i think "walk & talk" should do well, though benoit & sergio will suffer from vote-splitting (btw, "what i've lost" originally came out in 2009, didn't it?) i voted for a less-loved danny daze track b/c i just liked it too much more than the consensus pick to be strategic about it.
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 23 January 2012 19:32 (fourteen years ago)
"coming home" is totally dope, but it feels like 2 years old to me at this point
― J0rdan S., Monday, 23 January 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)
Steffi record prob best so far but i find it kinda so-so - the rest of the last bunch didn't really make any impression
― Cashmere Combabe, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:39 (fourteen years ago)
that invisible conga people record made me lol tho!
― Cashmere Combabe, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:40 (fourteen years ago)
i liked the icp one, it might be my fav "new discovery" of the day... strangely i actually knew most of these, i'm pretty sure last yr most of the trax were new to me
― teledyldonix, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:46 (fourteen years ago)
^this post seems otm
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
I hated most of the St Bernard album
lol was this a typo?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
okay actually I dig the end of the Joy Formidable track, now that I'm playing it again
― Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)
Comment roundup on my votes.
tUnE-yArDs - too much field song bellowing for me for the duration of the album, this is a good serving size
The Joy Formidable - Much preferred this (and the other reprised songs) on 2009's A Balloon Called Moaning EP, too many stadium rock gestures here. Still, its wish-fulfillment for Tanya Donelly fans.
Barbara Panther - doomed to be shadowed by Bjork, but I like Panther's politics and melodic sense more.
Locussolus, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas - fun cheese. The most fun cheese this year, in fact.
― Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Monday, 23 January 2012 19:56 (fourteen years ago)
ok caught up. lex is 100% otm about coming home but i wouldn't have voted for it for this year.
― call all destroyer, Monday, 23 January 2012 19:58 (fourteen years ago)
Why was there only 77? Was there no obvious consensus beyond that?
― MikoMcha, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)
77 is a lucky number for ILX
― Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)
77 = secret illuminati of ilx cult number
― emil.y, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)
50 isn't enough, 100 is too many, and "77" is sort of an ilx meme.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:01 (fourteen years ago)
It's ILM's way. The 78-1000+ will probably be posted after the countdown.
― Plato’s The Cave In Claymation (Sanpaku), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:02 (fourteen years ago)
actually 1000-
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:04 (fourteen years ago)
MikoMcha, my past ILM poll experiences for me is that my favorite discoveries lurk in the 78-150 range, which is an excellent reason to hang around to clean up after the party.

― MikoMcha, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)
OK, been catching up with the YouTubes since I got home, 'Families' and 'In a Hole' are my favourites of the stuff I didn't already know.
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)
I love "What I've Lost" but it's a 2010 record for me and I think actually came out initially at the end of 2009?
So far I voted for Selena and Invisible Conga People, but generally pleased with this list so far.
― Tim F, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
Here's the (in progress) Spotify link again, btwhttp://open.spotify.com/user/sp10000/playlist/5w1deUncq412xqQJmwkFm5
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
i mean really the benoit and sergio i loved was boy trouble but nobody cared about that so. i don't think it got nominated but i'm not sure.
― judith, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)
Going through the tracks on the playlist so far—only 15 of the 17 are available :( —any notion that the results are "samey" is kind of baffling.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)
Well I'm guessing the "samey" is more in terms of genres represented more than actual "sound" of the songs. I mean, similar complaints if we hit a long run of indie rock songs in a row.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)
Oh wait, the Mogwai is available in the UK if someone wants to drop it in the playlist (even though US'ers won't be able to hear it).
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)
Also love "midnight people" but I think that's an older track
― Dan S, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)
I was just talking about a patch of dance songs, not the results in their entirety
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:30 (fourteen years ago)
I've got the images down through #41 made at this point. Gonna be another coupla busy nights in photoshop!
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)
None of my selections have featured, but I still think this is fantastic list so far. Although I did vote for a different Locussolus track. This is so much more refreshing than the usual shit.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)
i voted for 'walk & talk' cuz it was (an albeit v early) 2011 release. also cuz i think its p rad
― i was a preteen blogger (Lamp), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:36 (fourteen years ago)
I nommed the Invisible Conga People track but I think I didn't vote for it because I thought I would be the only one interested in it. Glad to know I was wrong but bumping my head for not voting for it.
Also nommed and voted for the 3BALLMTY song. It's been an innescapable tune in Mexico throughout the year... you could hear it pretty much everywhere from the clubs to the hot-dog stands in here.
― Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)
They must be pretty giant in latin music circles (at least on the pop end), because I see a whole lot of their stuff come through here at work.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)
As for songs I've never heard before so far I love the production on the Barbara Panther track but wish her vocals were more concealed in the mix. Her voice is the least interesting thing going around.
― Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)
Moka so far those are my two favorite songs that I hadn't known about beforehand xxp
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:40 (fourteen years ago)
Moka delivers the goods.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:41 (fourteen years ago)
for real
― uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:42 (fourteen years ago)
xxxpost: Yeah they've pretty much conquered the latin market through internet. Erik was one of the pioneers on the 'tribal' scene (where the ridiculously pointy boots come from and it became a sort of meme and cultural curiosity on 2010).
Glad you've liked my selections :)
― Moka, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, would agree with DAM on those tracks. Moka always has the best taste, though.
― emil.y, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
steffi was my no.1, i mostly voted for dance stuff and it seemed like a more suitable candidate for 'best record of the year' than some of the other less uh assertive tracks on my ballot
enjoying the list so far
― jabba hands, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:51 (fourteen years ago)
Annie Clark talking about the song and doing a nice solo version of "Surgeon" here: http://www.avclub.com/articles/st-vincent-discusses-and-performs-surgeon,64467/
― Famous porn scenes like "shake that bear" (Phil D.), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)
this is great so far. nothing i voted for has appeared yet but im loving the tunes so far. a nice mix of stuff so far and mostly tunes i havent heard either. i would definitely have voted that 3Ball track for sure.
― Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Monday, 23 January 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)
"In a Hole" is really hitting the spot right now...dayum!
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 20:59 (fourteen years ago)
generally I don't pick up tracks after the fact when putting together a ballot but, had I heard "In A Hole" before submitting, I would have voted it really high
― Chaka Collar, lemme rock you (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)
Had forgotten how good that Gang Gang Dance track is. And if I'd managed to do a tracks vote, I'd have voted for Selena Gomez too.
Big love for the visuals for the countdown from here too. Gonna listen through to all of these, lots of stuff I haven't heard at all.
― Yeah Yeah Bohney (Craigo Boingo), Monday, 23 January 2012 21:04 (fourteen years ago)
