Selena was on my long list, but #77 is about right. Seems like a more polished* version of things (e.g. Britney) I've heard before.

*not a bad thing

Jeff W, Monday, 23 January 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah there really are four or five songs I couldve voted for in that GGD album

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

In those situations I just vote for the album (which is what I did wrt GGD)

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Monday, 23 January 2012 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

I love Glass Jar but I never listen to it on its own, so voted for the album instead.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:00 (fourteen years ago)

oh boy!

(but i have to go to school. i can't just stay here and watch the rollout ;_;)

teledyldonix, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

HELL ON HEELS YAY

teledyldonix, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I voted for the album, but one of the GGD songs (not Glass Jar) was my favorite song of the year

xp to sean

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

oh hey, "Glass Jar" is kind of great

that Selena Gomez song is totally forgettable; I've heard it on the radio a million times but didn't realize it until the chorus, and now that I'm not playing it I don't remember how it went

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

Pistol Annies!

this song is great, but had I heard this album, I would've put "Housewife's Prayer" v high on my ballot!!!

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

I'm surprised at how low both "Glass Jar" and "Hell on Heels" are!

Girl I want to take you to a JBR (jaymc), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

Wasn't feeling the Gomez but like the Gang Gang Dance so far, really reminds me of something but can't think what (esp the voices in the background)

Cashmere Combabe, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

'had I heard this album in time' xxp

uncle acid and the absquatulators (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah way too low for "Hell On Heels"!

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

"hell on heels"!!! 3 for 3 in excellence, let's keep this up.

xp i'd expect most voters to go for the albums rather than individual tracks b/c they're both so strong

the weird thing about "hell on heels" is that it's a total red herring for the album (while being an excellent single in its own right), but actually once you've heard the album it also makes complete sense, but in a very different way - kind of like you have to readjust the angle you're hearing it from.

my favourite bit is miranda's entrance, her voice raw like paint stripper - kind of the "HI WE REALLY MEAN THIS SHIT" moment

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

i fully expect hell on heels (the album) to place very highly

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:07 (fourteen years ago)

Love the harmonies on HOH mostly.

Jeff W, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, one more before I journey into the office on this rainy day. I'll resume at a (not too much later) point...

amazing screenshot

flopson, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

sigh and the excellence crashes to an end

cannot get down with tune-yards at all, it's just...a total mess to my ears

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

I can see why Pistol Annies would appeal to people but srsly this is like audio kryptonite to me, esp. that top voice

how many times do they have to repeat the phrase "hell on heels"

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

Another case of "I voted for the album". Video for this is great though.

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

I avoided this album because of screenshots like that but eventually came around to it. "Powa" is a nice track.

skip, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i can't get into tune-yards either... maybe her voice?

teledyldonix, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:14 (fourteen years ago)

man I would like "Bizness" a lot more if she didn't bellow so much on it; all the background she does with her voice on it is excellent

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

"Bizness" v. low! May be sone vote splitting here: all the nominated tune-yards tracks are good ones. As with GGD chat upthread, I only voted for the album in the end.
xp

Jeff W, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

The bellowing is half the appeal!

Jeff W, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I voted for "Gangsta", but I like "Bizness" just fine.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

tune yards really sounds like children's music to me

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 January 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I really hated tUnE-yArDs at first, based on her press pictures and the stupid spelling, but it really grew on me. Still nowhere near top ten or anything, but I've grown to appreciate what she's doing.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

Ditto, it's like someone shouting at you through a megaphone.

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:20 (fourteen years ago)

GGD track ran out of steam for me wasn't really into the 2nd part of it

Pistol Annies was ok

Tuneyards was junk

Cashmere Combabe, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

Gukbe a lady tonight (some dude), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

ha, i said that before watching this "bizness" video

hadn't listened to this since early last year... shit reminds me of dirty projectors, it's a bit better than i remembered but yeah i can't handle these vocals

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 January 2012 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

i get what ppl hear in tune-yards & feel like i could get into it if i wasnt so viscerally repulsed by certain aspects of it

flopson, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

i mostly agree w/ flopson

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 January 2012 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

Huh, I kind of thought "Bizness" would be in the top 20.

monster_xero, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

my reaction to the tuneyards album was that practically every other song on it was much much much better than "Bizness"

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

Wow this is great! The first time I've actually voted. I feel so 'invested' ;)

Into it so far, especially Gomez. tUnE-yArDs and this particular Gang Gang Dance record never really clicked with me, but they're still fine. I like 'em well enough

MikoMcha, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

So basically tUnE-yArDs is this year's entry in the "does inexplicably well on P&J poll depsite it seeming like most people hate it" indie album stakes?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

hmm i don't really like "who says". my fav selena gomez song is still "naturally"

teledyldonix, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

i get what ppl hear in tune-yards & feel like i could get into it if i wasnt so viscerally repulsed by certain aspects of it

yeah i guess - i was actually anticipating hearing the album b/c of what i'd read, and then i put it on and it was just so...everything i hate in one package, some primary school child banging pots and pans together. DNW

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

otoh the thing i've heard ppl champion it for, the bellowing & general total unrestraint, is what repulses me the most. at the time same if it were at all toned down it would probably mute the appeal for most fans, the music wouldnt be as remarkable if it werent as unshy/embarassing but it would also be less painful to endure.

flopson, Monday, 23 January 2012 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

also i remember thinking some of the tune-yards lyrics ("gangsta", probably) were KIND OF DUBIOUS but this was ages ago and i can't remember the details (and don't intend to return to the album to find out)

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

i think when i heard it praised i thought it would be along the lines of...gang gang dance, actually. that kind of ambitious, huge-sounding fusion. it wasn't at all :(

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:28 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i guess - i was actually anticipating hearing the album b/c of what i'd read, and then i put it on and it was just so...everything i hate in one package, some primary school child banging pots and pans together.

haha okay dude, the shit going on is significantly more complicated than that, particularly all of the looped arpeggio/hocket stuff in the background

I mean, technically all of that shit is massively on point and mad impressive, I just spend about 70% of the time disliking the main instrument

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2012 15:28 (fourteen years ago)

I rely heavily on lex, Tim, and Rev, as usual.

I always feel vaguely guilty about not posting more of the stuff I listen to to ILX but a lot of the time there isn't quite an appropriate thread. :/

The Reverend, Saturday, 1 September 2012 00:28 (thirteen years ago)

I can see how it would feel weird to start one, but there a few posters (like those MikoMcha named for a start) that should probably just have rolling threads of their favorites. or idk, just start a bunch of single-track threads? ilm has felt kind of sedate this year, sometimes for the best, but all those artist polls--some of which I have totally enjoyed don't get me wrong--have often made the board seem backward-facing this year.

rob, Saturday, 1 September 2012 01:24 (thirteen years ago)

There has been a lot of good music new around this year imo, but especially with the demise of Outloud (RIP) I have no idea whether anyone's listening to the same stuff as me.

direct references of (seandalai), Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

i'm excited about the '12 poll, i really having a feeling this might be the year that johnny fever hears me out on the set number of albums and tracks nominations thing

cute, banned, alert (some dude), Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

lol no way, he cant give in to us now

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

i really having a feeling this might be the year that johnny fever hears me out on the set number of albums and tracks nominations thing

Would you prefer a set number of each (non-combined) or just wild west open endless nominating?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

I have no objections to 20+20 or whatever. Also thinking of "pre-loading" the nominations list with the results from the P+J/Pitchfork/RA/etc EOY lists. The most important thing is that nobody is blocked from voting for an album/track just because it wasn't nommed, second most important thing is that the list isn't completely huge and unreadable.

direct references of (seandalai), Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)

Because iirc there's rarely been an instance where something that could've made the top 50/77/whatever# has missed out on doing so (last year's LMFAO travesty not withstanding).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

set number of each, definitely. the choice of being able to do more of one but it taking away from the other just gives me a headache.

cute, banned, alert (some dude), Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

In practice, wild west nominating would probably work ok as long as nobody dumps 500 tracks in one go.

direct references of (seandalai), Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

Can you pre-load it with terrorizer/decibel lists too?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

wild west forever. plus dumping it in one go is a major plus in copying and pasting imo

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

The master noms list sometimes reaches critical mass, though, making it impossible to go through for voting purposes.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:30 (thirteen years ago)

how many does the big eoy get?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:31 (thirteen years ago)

For example, someone who doesn't really vote in a lot of polls but makes a habit of voting the EOY poll may look at two lists of 1900 nominations and say "fuck this!"

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

The last few years, the master lists have hovered right around 1k.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

I thought we decided that tracks from 1900 weren't valid for the 2012 poll, even if they did chart early in the year. xpost

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

xp (or less. I honestly can't remember now.)

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

otoh you might get someone who sees lots of stuff not nominated and go fuck this. You cant win eitherway.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:33 (thirteen years ago)

I've never seen a documented case of that happening, but have with the scenario I've described.

It's ok so long as they didn't place in the 1900 top 1900.

direct references of (seandalai), Saturday, 1 September 2012 12:18 (thirteen years ago)

tbh i've spent more of the past few months watching sport than hunting music - i have been doing the latter of course but i haven't had the time to think of the best way to hype something on ilm, a few of the things i have hyped got v tepid responses - i feel pretty out of touch w/ critical consensus this year. i don't even feel like i want to talk about rap or dance music with ilmers right now

thank god for "call me maybe", really
