when james sings "iced honey" i like to pretend he's saying "i'm stuntin'"

@51TimesNo (some dude), Friday, 20 January 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

yeah on "some kind of monster" they seem kind of lost as to how to operate as people in a band together

bringing in lou, it's going to be lou's thing, lou will be in charge...it was probably kind of liberating, plus the scattershot way it sounds like lou worked on the thing was totally the opposite of what you say in some kind of monster

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 January 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

in the original draft i wrote about st anger a lot and how it is interesting in that it is the product of four people who cannot make a record together

also bob rock's description of st anger as "dudes just playing in a garage together" totally applies to lulu and does not apply to st anger at all

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Friday, 20 January 2012 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, the documentary makes it look as though making a metallica album is one of the HARDEST THINGS EVER.

along the same lines, i was reading an interview with pete townshend about how long it took to record some of the Who's albums, and I thought: i would love if there was just an hour's worth of townshend/entwistle/moon improvving in the studio with zero prep.

wah? the movie showed them C&Ping riffs together in protools to construct songs! bob rock is such a chooch

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 January 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

tbf a lot of dudes playing in garages these days have protools

@51TimesNo (some dude), Friday, 20 January 2012 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

i love that scene. james is like "i can't write enough lyrics :("

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Friday, 20 January 2012 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

Lars is the singer; Lou is the drummer.

Dragon is the only song on the entire album that really works. But man, it really works. Perhaps because Lars does not suck nearly as much as he does throughout the rest of the record, or perhaps because the gross lyrics don't get stuck in Lou's throat on the way out, or perhaps because those guitar solos are quite good. Probably all of that. I bet it was one of the last songs recorded, if not the last.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

dragon mainly succeeds on the basis of dat riff

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 06:55 (fourteen years ago)

a friend accused me of "irl trolling" when i wouldn't stop asserting that i unironically love this album

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 07:16 (fourteen years ago)

This album was top ten in the Wire magazine readers poll btw. Subscribers only got to vote for one album each too, so there is some love out there for it.

in 10 years all the people that voted for shit like fleet foxes in pazz & jop instead of this will hang their heads in shame

one star reviews from amazin - the highlights

- I tell you, between this and the new Queensryche album being the equivalent of hearing fingernails scraping down a chalkboard, my fond musical memories are being tainted more and more. Guys, please stop.

- The first song reminded me of my dog when I was a kid, that howled when my stereo was too loud.

- Lou Reed? Metallica? Together? What freakin planet are you guys on? To much west coast? WTF???

- Lulu is poo-poo, and I refuse to offer a sophisticated criticism beyond that because both artists should be ashamed of themselves to unleash this garbage.

- don't waste your time reading these views, you'll know weather you like it or not within 30 seconds.

- I wish this would have been one they got together recorded and left in one of their little vaults of stuff and long after they were dead someone could find it and go...hey look at this...then I would be too old to even hear...

- You listen to this and shake your head, how could someone have green-lighted this project? And one disc wasn't enough, this turd is 2 discs long! Simply, unbelievably BAD!

- Its not the worst album ever recorded (That would be reserved for Metallica's 2003 trainwreck "St. Anger") but it comes pretty darn close.

- awful.metallica stop wasting my money.retire already u suck.awful awful awful awful.terrible.terrible.terrible.a total piece of A.worst thing ever since the laST METALLICA ALBUM.

- Yuck!! If this is the kind of crap Metallica is going to put out now..well, in the words of facebook---I'll unlike them.

if this was a poll, i'd vote "To much west coast? WTF???"

worst thing ever since the laST METALLICA ALBUM.

I'm surprised someone that hated Death Magnetic so much would even bother with this.

that's the awesome thing about Metallica fans: they keep. coming. back.

In reply to danmac:

WIRE were clearly 'trolling' their subscribers. Only a genuine mouth breathing idiot would have ranked that album above, say, Wolves In The Throne Room, Obake, Liturgy or Yob...

kind of weird to think of ian astbury reading pitchfork

Feel bad for him that they only gave his collab with Boris a 3.0 or something.

The good news: Lou's touring Lulu in Europe.
The bad news: there's no Metallica.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 2 February 2012 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

Lou and band will perform material from Reed’s entire cannon of songs ranging from the Velvet Underground to his recent Metallica collaborative album LULU.
what a radical concept -- he'll play his greatest hits and some songs from his latest album!

tylerw, Thursday, 2 February 2012 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

you buried the lede, which is that the name of the tour is FROM VU TO LULU!

bummer that he's only playing in Europe, but kinda makes sense since there were a bunch of countries over there where the album charted in the top 10

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Thursday, 2 February 2012 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

finally listening to this. so far "The View" and "Dragon" really stand out. "Junior Dad" is pretty but I'm not quite sure I hear yet what everyone else is hearing.

ryan, Friday, 3 February 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

I'm going to playing records at a thing tonight, trying to decide which song from Lulu I should play.

Kind of feeling "Cheat on Me"

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 1 March 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

"Pumping Blood" from ILXLULU

Clancy Fans and Fancy Clans (Eazy), Thursday, 1 March 2012 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

"Iced Honey" would be my party mix pick

some dude, Thursday, 1 March 2012 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

I'd love to play anything from the two pre-Lulu records but I only have the ability to plan vinyl tonight.

I was thinking "Iced Honey" as well, I might play both

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 1 March 2012 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

put "dragon" on and run

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:12 (fourteen years ago)

deep house remix of junior dad

the wild eyed boy from soundcloud (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

when does the remix album drop anyway? heard moby does some sick things to "cheat on me."

tylerw, Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

I believe my reaction to a Moby remix of any of this record would be similar to yr average Metallica fans reaction to the real thing.

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

also rumored to be a will.i.am remix of iced honey w/ a mustaine cameo verse.

tylerw, Thursday, 1 March 2012 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

"Brandenburg Gate" (feat. Sean Paul)
