wtf! it would take me about 60 minutes and a copy of soundforge to get from that breakwater track to "robot rock". i'm not really sure how i feel about that.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Robot Rock" = the motherhugging bomb. Just the timbre of that guitar sound, the way it's been processed or edited or whatever. Hmmm, Homework tracks produced like Discovery ones, anybody?

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 22 January 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that "human after all" sample up there is bullshit. even on computer speakers it doesn't sound like them. I have another version that's AMAZING, like a combination of homeworky beats/bass with discovery-ish phasored synths over top (so much so that it could just be a really good imitation...) i'll put it up if I can figure out how to use usendit.com

Elliot (Elliot), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, this might work:

Elliot (Elliot), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like Daft Punk, but it certainly doesn't sound like an album-opening track.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, the Breakwater track is illuminating...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 23 January 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

hearing the breakwaters track reminded me of hearing george duke's "i love you more" for the first time a couple years ago.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 23 January 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know if i was just too excited, but i'm just not that impressed with 'robot rock'... it sounds not bad as an album track, but kind of disappointing as a single.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Sunday, 23 January 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it was cool to hear it at The End last night, even better tho was Erol Alkan opening his set with The Prime Time Of Your Life - OMG the vocoder sounded so good and it's like E.L.O. gone electro-schaffel muthafuckas

Stevem On X (blueski), Sunday, 23 January 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

cues for Daft Punk's new look...

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 23 January 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Robot Rock, eh?

http://www.cobraislandtoys.com/gobot/rocklords.jpg

That was Erol Alkan playing 'Prime Time'? Wasn't looking, I was too caught up in the moment after an excellent moment of song ID'ing. Everyone loved it, even when it shredded itself into tiny molecule rending shrapnel and we had to stop dancing.

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i'm assuming the track really does just accelerate to 2000bpm and that wasn't just Alkan arsing around

Stevem On X (blueski), Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Its place in the tracklist makes sense (1st or 2nd track easy). See dude, there is one album I'm not doubting on right now ;-).

Think that was a Vitalic remix of 'Robot Rock' this morning?

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I have another version that's AMAZING,

It's the same track that MarkP linked to earlier on. Still, nice track - but thw fact the second half is exactly the same as the first half kind of makes it seem like a fake.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Sunday, 23 January 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I somehow missed it til later.

Elliot (Elliot), Monday, 24 January 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What is this "sampling" I've been hearing about?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it's this thing

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole television obsession is ironic/anachronistic?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"they're heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere"

donut christ (donut), Monday, 24 January 2005 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So, every one knows it's on Soulseek now?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 24 January 2005 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it leaked

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 24 January 2005 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, this robot bird flies by my window and starts singing the whole album before I can kill it (...well had to listen to it just one time, can't stand you guys going on about it for 2 months.)

[Enters wanna-be jaded mode] nah fuck that, tears of joy when they sing "prime time of your life" for the first time (that's one strange track btw.)

Omar (Omar), Monday, 24 January 2005 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

damn 56k i want more than anything to hear this.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 24 January 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

'Make Love' (sort of lover's motorik innit?) is so sweet, my teeth fell out.

[exits chanting footie style: "Three Classics In A Row! Three Classics In A Row!"]

Omar (Omar), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oddly, daft punk albums always get release/leaked just as i either break up with or get a new girlfriend.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

which one was it this time?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

got a new one (last friday)

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM THE BRAINWASHAAAAA

ha! That's one cool moment.

Very much robotic I'm glad to report [deletes it from HD]

Omar (Omar), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the first two tracks are great - i expect the rest is too - i am about to find out :)

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it. Steam Machine is such a funny song, it's as if an actual steam machine is singing his crazy little song to seduce the mangler. I love it.

JakeWithBrain!, Monday, 24 January 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

this.

album.

is.

so.

fucking.

amazing.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

After one listen, I'm disappointed. I only really like the single, "The Prime Time of Your Life" and "The Brainwasher". It sounds like an electronic novelty pop album, and those three tracks work great in that context. The others didn't excite me. It took me a while to get into Discovery, unlike a lot of people who loved it right away, and the warmth of emotion of that album is certainly not here. The tracks I mentioned have a sort of rocking dance pulse I can relate to.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, "Steam Machine" as well. Anyway, the remixes will be something to look forward to.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

First, I haven’t read the entire thread so advance apologies if my points have already been made.

Non-pop dance music is a multi multi billion euro business in Europe, don’t underestimate that even though it may lack in crossover radio hits.

I don’t think there’s any good reason why non-pop dance music couldn’t be as popular in the States as it is in Europe. It is American music, bascially, after all.

The reason it’s not may also have to do with media and politics.

a) Before* commercial media took over, underground electronic dance music was played on National public pop radio (which has a big influence in Europe) as part of their musically unformatted programming. *It still is of course.

b) most young Americans are probably a lot more likely to be Christian and politically conservative than their European counterparts and this may partially responsible form them not to embrace drugs & “abstract” electronic music is such a massive way. This may be nonsense, though, I don’t know. However, it may take a bit of a metropolitan worldview to get into it, something that may be lacking outside of California and New York.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

SORRY, WRONG THREAD!

JoB (JoB), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the warmth of emotion of that album is certainly not here

Err...'Make Love'. Basically Discovery melted into one track.
With those last three tracks they really seem to go for the 21st century Kraftwerk crown.

Omar (Omar), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

they use the same sounds too much for my liking - great as the sounds are! (the vocoder esp.). i was hoping for MORE, DP continue to frustrate me by not taking the bells and whistles/kitchen sink approach of Basement Jaxx but in spite of that this is still a pretty strong record for dancefloors - The Brainwasher and Technologic should go down well.

One advantage is that this album is much more feasible live than Discovery. But if they tour it, would they play Discovery songs? That would almost be cruel after denying us for so long, but how could they ever play live again and not play anything from Discovery? The alternative is that they never play live again, which may or may not be worse, hmm.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha saying that 'Emotion' has a bassline and general plod not unlike 'Feels Like Home' from Kish Kash!

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i just can't quite agree with how they feel about progression vs/via monotony. i mean WHY does more not happen in 'Emotion'? WHY do they seem to favour this 'progression via monotony' approach? i'm not satisfied by a 'because it doesn't NEED anything else' response, i think it would be better with something more. 'six week albums' is a neat concept but i'd rather they'd spent at least six months on this if they're going to do it at all. i think time IS a factor. not that this sounds 'bashed out quickly' completely (tho it does to an extent). there are moments on 'Homework' I did find boring because the monotony was too much, other times it was okay. It's not a problem on 'Discovery' because half of it is song-based and the tracks are brief (with the exception of 'Too Long' which i'm not really a fan of either!). Here they've stretched them again and it's stretching it maybe too far for me, tho I'd give this album 7 out of 10 overall and the good bits are VERY VERY GOOD INDEED.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Omar's comment re Kraftwerk rings true for me as I still cannot really stand to listen to their most repetetive, nagging stuff, however sweet it can be sonically (as is the case with 'Emotion' which has lovely vocoder, that frog-like blurping bass and the major pads and the trusted 'one step up at a time' progression)

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Goddammit. "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is based largely on an Edwin Byrdsong sample but it fucks with it mightily after a minute. "Robot Rock" is the first few seconds of that Breakwater track, and nothing more. Thanks for telling me there's no motherfucking Santa Claus, Jed. Hope you're pleased with yourself.

What's this place, Biblevania? (natepatrin), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm also wondering if there will be an unofficial remix version available on the same day HAA is released to follow the recent unofficial Prodigy and Chemical brothers remix editions. i may ask mr cryonmyconsole about this...

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

after listening to this five times through, i'm inclined to say it's a bit disappointing overall, with the caveat being that, as steve says, the good parts are very very good.
