Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, ZEBULON PIKE is an instrumental prog-doom metal band formed in late 2002. Inspired in equal parts by heavy sounds of the 70’s (Mountain, Pentagram, Captain Beyond, early Judas Priest), progressive rock (King Crimson, Rush), and 20th century classical (Bela Bartok, Arvo Part, and many others).

Within Temptation is a shite Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 1996 in Waddinxveen, Netherlands. The group consists of Sharon den Adel (vocals), Robert Westerholt (guitars), Jeroen van Veen (bass), Martijn Spierenburg (keyboards), Ruud Adrianus Jolie (guitars) and Mike Coolen (drums). Despite being labeled by the media as a gothic metal band, Within Temptation consider themselves “more a symphonic rock/metal band … we are… no gothic band”.

i voted for them, but they're not very good. i played them once for my mom and she was like, "i like this. they sound like evanescence," then after a song or two played she asked, "they're kinda generic aren't they?"
― Mordy, Monday, 16 January 2012 02:34 (twelve years ago) link
haha why did you vote for them then? your vote got them in the rollout!

i've since soured on them

also, i think they were already the last band on my ballot, so they barely sneaked on in the first place

Fans of the band at #126 (inc you lol) are going to be ever so mad at you, they missed out by 4 points. you gave Within Temptation 30 points!

30 seems like a lot. is that true? i just listed my 21 picks in order of best to worst. i'm shocked that the worst still got 30 points.

Henry's paws are too big for my iPhone, but I will say that isn't nearly as good as last years album, so start there if you are unfamiliar. This one is still worth a listen tho!

I will add the genres so we can have a results-by-genre part on needle too like previous years as i know that's quite popular.btw feel free to make predictions as its a lot of fun at the end where we can see who was closest or who was way off. Predicting later on is a lot easier. And if anyone has any comments on what is in the countdown so far please post away!

Within Temptation, weird. I've never heard of them. The cover is hilarious. It looks like a young adult mystery, like a slutty Nancy Drew/Trixie Belden and the case of the creepy tweeners who practice occult sacrifices in the woods. Is this band's demographic kids who were too young to read when the first Harry Potter came out?
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 16 January 2012 05:09 (twelve years ago) link
Okay, based on the small sample size of 3+ tracks of each of these
Disliked - Within Temptation, AzarethOkay, but wouldn't check again - Zebulon PikeLiked, but blimey the tracks are long - Peste NoireLiked, will listen to again - Weekend Nachos, Grails
Looking frwd to the rest of the countdown

Grails are the first of my votes to place. Totally false metal!
― good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Monday, 16 January 2012 10:44 (twelve years ago) link
I'm not sure why, because they seem totally my thing, but I'm just not into Weekend Nachos. And yet I have had two picks place already (Peste Noir and Grails).
I predict Uncle Acid will do a lot less well than people think it will - I love the album but really fought as to whether I should vote for it (I did in the end) because it's not really a metal record, it's completely freakbeat. If I'd been more involved in the nominations thread I might have been tempted to veto it. I also predict my #1 will not be higher than #20.

KODIAK (Germany) are a new 3 piece Funeral Drone/Doom Metal band. Their sound excels as a mixture of monolithic ultraheavy compositions with expressionistic poems. Their algid songs consist of long monotonous build-ups (comparable to a long lonely haunting trip through the arctic) and some seldom parts of eruption, disembarrassment and hope.
― Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Monday, 16 January 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago) link
Oh, those arctic haunting trips. I still have my haunting license framed in my wall. Comparable, oh so comparable. On a scale of 1 to 10 this is Comparable.

I have to warn you -- there is some singing that you might hate, and it's in the first song, which is interminable. If you can make it past the first 3 min of that without turning it off, it's pretty good the rest of the way.

Lol u guys! :) Kerr is otm in that most of the metal ranks is filled out by the hidden army of lurkers (I know you're out there, Magnus B!) who may or may not be allowed to vote in the big poll.
Also I voted for Pistol Annies; that was a really good record. It might sound like Dolly Parton's Greatest Hits but its soul lies somewhere between Cut and Nebraska...
― Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 2 February 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link
oh yea also: I'm a bit skeptical that Bon Iver or Adele are going to show up today. I mean, anything's possible--and I don't remember if the #1 P4k album of the year has never not shown up--but I think Tuneyards and Yuck will probably be the worst of it. Adele had probably the biggest song of the year and she couldn't manage to make the tracks poll at all, so I wouldn't worry...
― Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 2 February 2012 14:57 (twelve years ago) link
that 'never' should be 'ever' :/
I wish it sounded like Dolly! I couldn't get past the production to give a shit what they were saying.

― two lights crew (seandalai), Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link
xp I still don't get that complaint! I think the whole old-timey sound gives the record a kind of edge, in ways that I am just not talented enough to delineate...
― Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:01 (twelve years ago) link
I didn't hear it as old-timey, which is probably on me not them. I dig old-timey.

― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:04 (twelve years ago) link
Isn't it? I think the lights add a lot. Also, Bruce: more loops and wordless noises pls.
Re: PA -- I love old timey, and I made the mistake of watching a Pistol Annies video instead of just listening to the song.
― La Lechera, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:06 (twelve years ago) link
I'm just going by what kjb and emil.y were saying (or at least what I thought they were saying) more than anything EZ...
I dont...get your complaint either?
― Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:07 (twelve years ago) link
iirc it was really glossy. Not to my liking, and that impression made me not like the song because...I am a feeble minded monkey?
― La Lechera, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:11 (twelve years ago) link
It's old-timey instrumentation with a bright. unnatural sheen (to my ears, at least). That's what I meant by production; I would bet they would be much more my thing live where the mix and mastering wouldn't have that gloss.
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:12 (twelve years ago) link
xpost, obv!
I think La Lechera and I both were bothered by the same thing
― EZ Snappin, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:13 (twelve years ago) link
but we should probably take the conversation elsewhere and leave this for metal
well I spent most of my year being forced to listen to country music radio, so the productions sounds really understated to me.
Like I'm listening to "Beige" right now, and it still sounds to me like a dolled up version of one of the slower cuts on American Beauty
I mean, this is all subjective opinion--I mean, I never expected it to not have pop sheen, so I wasn't disappointed...
― Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 2 February 2012 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

Wittled down the Top 125 to about 20 I might like, of course by the time I've listened to those it'll be 2013 and Kerr will be moaning at me for not voting in Metal Poll 2012.
