Yeah Its the Arps is great, don't agree that its retreading the same ground as snooze 4 love. maybe in sort of a melodic/ harmonic way, buts its palette and feeling is totally different. while snooze 4 love had a 90s ambient house feeling, the Arps, i guess down to its minimally treated dry ARP synth sounds is all like popcorn/ Wendy Carlos novelty dicopop.

dsb, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

I posted another track from this on the sandbox thread right before we switched back over, but i have really been feeling the new Linkwood. Someone pointed out the melodic figure was very close to Pepe Braddock's Deep Burnt...

best part is how you can occasionally hear crowd noise-- in the last half hour he even has a damaged record/dusty needle/both on a song that he stops and restarts three times

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 13 January 2012 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

It's like a low key cocktail party for you and Michael Mayer recorded it

mh, Friday, 13 January 2012 23:46 (fourteen years ago)

wait till you get to pts 3 and 4

pt 5 is probably my favorite-- def the "classics" segment and i'm guessing somewhere around 3 or 4am.

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 13 January 2012 23:57 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think that "inspector norse" is necessarily a retread of "snooze" but i think using the palette of analog synths as opposed to endearingly goofy pianos or accordions or w/e is informed by its success. the new/original productions on 'remaster of the universe' sorta hinted that he might start doing the whole wacky live band thing a whole lot more... i'm glad he decided against that.

not sure if he used analog or digi synths for "eurodans" but i guess that's also got some novelty discopop appeal too

psychgawsple, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:01 (fourteen years ago)

looks like both bradock and linkwood sampled freddie hubbard's "little sunflower". i feel like the same sample is used a lot in hip hop too... tribe called quest's "the love" for sure, probably others too

psychgawsple, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:10 (fourteen years ago)

so i guess dilla is ultimately responsible for it

psychgawsple, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

Nice, i actually know the milt Jackson version of that song, but had no idea it was from that. i'm starting on the Mayer Marathon as well.. so far so enjoying it, made me check wether Pop Ambient 2012 was out yet. (february)

dsb, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

helpful to think that 0:00 of that mix is likely somewhere between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM and do the math from there.

Stuff from the end of 2011 that caught my attention ... Morphosis Morphosis Morphosis !!! Too Far EP with the Dettmann mixes is immense intense clanging dubby funkiness -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEcLa_IWQmU

ARP 3 by Floating Points is best thing he has done so far and it's very house with some great cat noises buried deep in the mix which can make for a slightly confusing listen for cat owners such as myself

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d38xbAFnCSQ

The Mike Huckaby SYNTH remixes of Sistol/Pole are absolutely wonderful too

out comes stanley, Sunday, 15 January 2012 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

Floating Points does a killer line in house/techno DJing, dig out his sets on Rinse with Kyle Hall and every time he appears on the Hessle Audio show and see for your self.

Anyway 2012 house yay!

DJ SOTOFETT - Pulehouse

Vibes.

jimitheexploder, Sunday, 15 January 2012 21:58 (fourteen years ago)

Think of should go to one of FP's nights at plastic people one of these months... (is it selfish/gauche/RONG! of me to want him to just pump out nothing but house bangers like arp3 and vacuum boogie?)

EDB, Sunday, 15 January 2012 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

That Sotofett is great. Expecting good things from the Sex Tags crew this year. Not exactly house I guess but I'm keen to get my hands on one of Rush Hour's James Mason reissues. Discogs prices have been crazy in the last few years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvc1FWjIwsI

mmmm, Sunday, 15 January 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

When I've heard him play it's nowt but house jams, he's smooth as hell. Classics, odd ball funk, detroit business, just party house all night long. He's a killer DJ. Go see him man.

Oh mmmmm that sounds sweet. If that aint house I don't know what is.

jimitheexploder, Sunday, 15 January 2012 23:39 (fourteen years ago)

thx for the tip on the james mason, it does sound p rad so far. tho from what i've heard that is def the housiest track

psychgawsple, Monday, 16 January 2012 03:45 (fourteen years ago)

I want someone I know to throw a party where everyone gets really fucked up and they attempt to play that 12hr Mayer mix in its entirety.

Matt DC, Monday, 16 January 2012 10:36 (fourteen years ago)

that person could be you!

Number None, Monday, 16 January 2012 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

Xposts: Having seen FP dj before I know that much, I was talking about his productions.

EDB, Monday, 16 January 2012 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

Come on somebody, make the Spotify playlist already.

Or is that kind of self-defeating as approx 10% of the songs mentioned here will have made it to Spotify?

Another belatedly discovery of 2011 but why didn't anyone tell me about the Margaret Dygas self-titled on Perlon? Very much a dry, skeletal affair, typical of the label I guess - I'm not the biggest expert but on at least a superficial level it's very much like Villalobos' "Alcachofa" texturally - but there's enough darkness to remind me of Chloe while moments such as the live drums on this remind me of Four Tet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIYXlDhb-hQ

I don't want to use the m-word but there's a reason that whole thing took off and stuff like this makes me kinda miss it.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

i heard about that dygas record somewhere... thought it was ilx? maybe not tho

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 08:58 (fourteen years ago)

I like the danny daze track but can't really deal with the hot creations thing

Cashmere Combabe, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 11:44 (fourteen years ago)

that cottam track from way upthread is amazing, it's my sax automatic kneejerk love kicking in. the b-side "twang" is fantastic too

I like the danny daze track but can't really deal with the hot creations thing

― Cashmere Combabe, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 6:44 AM (6 hours ago)

what is the hot creations thing? i usually don't know what people mean when they say this. i believe there is a wolf + lamb thing that i also don't get

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:28 (fourteen years ago)

hot creations thing = lee foss "u got me", miguel campbell "something special", danny daze "your everything", hot natured "forward motion", clockwork "it's you again", etc.

it's not too crazily different than the wolf + lamb thing, but with (usually) more prominent vocals/pop hooks. it's lee foss and jamie jones' label idk

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

no, i mean, i get that its a label with songs, i like a lot of them, but the way people talk about it leads me to think that it is something extra-musical which they don't like about hot creations

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:22 (fourteen years ago)

I don't get it either. Maybe it sounds better at a rooftop party in LA or poolside in Miami? The plodding house beats, grating vocals and corny R&B samples. All I know is to AVOID Hot Creations/Hot Natured nights in London LIKE THE PLAGUE. Topless, sweaty 17 yr olds in sunglasses pushing on the dance floor.. no thanks.

mmmm, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe it sounds better at a rooftop party in LA or poolside in Miami

i love it because it sounds exactly like a rooftop party in LA or poolside in miami

tinie tempurah (lex pretend), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

ah, okay, well, i live in FL so i'm more inclined to associate poolside miami with the hot creations sound than sweaty 17yo londoners

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

Topless, sweaty 17 yr olds in sunglasses pushing on the dance floor

this sounded awesome until it dawned on me that you were probably talking about guys

I just got the first Hinge Finger from Madteo: http://www.discogs.com/Madteo-Bugler-Gold-Pt1/release/3269305 it's a well nice slab of odd ball house.

Looking forward to this too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGVP5A36nsY

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

i would absolutely go to a hot creations night in london for reasons that have only partly to do with shirtless guys

donna rouge, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

My experience with sweaty 17y/o Londoners has been more tedious and gross than anything else. Makes sense, since Hot Creations, Wolf and Lamb, et al make tedious and awful music that's by and large to be avoided like the plague, shirtless guys or no.

But that's just me.

Frasier Ramon (EDB), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

it makes me want to go to more hot creations nights in london, certainly

just....don't. i love all the music but seriously when people talk negatively about the 'hot creations thing' this is probably what they are talking about. so much aggro.

the emancipation of me-me (tpp), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

oh and dance music snobbery i guess

the emancipation of me-me (tpp), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 20:27 (fourteen years ago)

the lary crowds combined with the shit 'TBC' venues, promoters knowingly overselling said shit venues two, three times over capacity and getting old i imagine means in 2012 i will be choosing my london nights out p selectively

the emancipation of me-me (tpp), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

has anyone heard some of the wolf + lamb mixes where they get on the mic? in theory i'm all for a bit of innovation in the dj box but it is incredibly cringey, sounds like a bad teen disco in suburban dublin when he's roaring "when the beat drops, i wanna see how low y'all can go!!" - albeit with jesse pinkman accents.

Benoit & Sergio have a much better sense of songcraft than a lot of their contemporaries.

ha, yea i feel weird talking about it on ilm cause there seems to be a lot of (in some cases very direct!) connections.hassan has some amazing cosmic vibes, btw, good work. you had to have a full band setup on those tracks, right?

Well first of all they took one of my favorite electro producers and turned him into Maceo Plex, which is not a slight I'll forgive easily.

i think he got a big initial chunk of his fanbase recording under the maetrik moniker, seems like semi-generic if still technically impressive tech-house was definitely a gateway drug

The Forward Strategy Group is really good, all clanging, metallic textures against industrial dones - makes me think of Andy Stott's recent material but played at 45 instead of 33.
