the triumph of ross as bangers over everything is a-ok by me

― J0rdan S., Sunday, 8 January 2012 12:17 (6 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

agree with this but i think theres a bit more to it than bangers over everything, imo the raekwonesque namedropping of luxury products over string samples is a crucial counterpart to the relentless bangers. also theres a humour to his epic imagery that carries the bangers by not having the tone be too bleak or monochromatic, which at its worst is confounding ("bitch i got 8 balls") and at its best absurd hyperbole ("talkin to the holy ghost/in my buggati")

flopson, Monday, 9 January 2012 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

apparently she's from harlem! who knew

um, everyone, considering how she named her track "212"

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 January 2012 00:18 (fourteen years ago)

flopson i don't mean bangers as in literal like lex luger beats, i just mean dope rap tracks overcoming everyone's collective unwillingness to take him seriously

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 January 2012 00:19 (fourteen years ago)

agree with that obviously

okay but then why does she rap the entire thing with a british accent?

flopson, Monday, 9 January 2012 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

it does kinda sound like it could be a sarcastic 'lol i'm repping noo yawk bruv' thing the way she delivers it

seasonal thug (some dude), Monday, 9 January 2012 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know, but any of y'all that heard her make repeated references to new york ("212", "two-one-zoo", "uptown A") and thought she was british are straight retards, sorry

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 January 2012 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

none of those code as new york to me, idk

anyway she sucks who cares

rebecca blah (k3vin k.), Monday, 9 January 2012 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

haha none of those "code" as new york to me, says kevin k about the song being titled after manhattan's area code

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 January 2012 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

k3v have you ever been to new york

bob loblaw people (dayo), Monday, 9 January 2012 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

flopson, Monday, 9 January 2012 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

somebody call the brinks truck (D-40), Monday, 9 January 2012 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

i dont have 2 know where new york is 2 vote 'empire state of mind' #1 in p&j imo

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 January 2012 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not saying i thought she was british, just that a casual scanning of that shitshow of a song could plausibly lead one to that idea

seasonal thug (some dude), Monday, 9 January 2012 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

listening to this new one, nice call, this is great

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 9 January 2012 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

he's dropping 3 mixtapes in the next 3 mo. in the lead-up to a full album release. this first tape includes production from alchemist & oh no

somebody call the brinks truck (D-40), Monday, 9 January 2012 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

"production from oh no" is batsignal to dudes like me, awesome

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 9 January 2012 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

i think what really makes it work is that i just like i self devine more than most dudes who seem to work w/ this kind of production. he strikes me as being a supersmart dude, his time not involved doing music is spent in like community leadership & etc., & he just has a good rapper's voice

this isnt the kind of thing that will appeal to brainwasher or jordan s, most likely, but I think it's a lot stronger than the typical boom bap type shit the true school dudes rep for

somebody call the brinks truck (D-40), Monday, 9 January 2012 04:02 (fourteen years ago)

are we really supposed to hear "212" and think the ny area code automatically? it's not like 90210 or something, i've never even heard it in association with the city. those other references are even more moonspeak to me. mind you im on the west coast and thoroughly underwhelmed by azealiea's whole shtick

chilli, Monday, 9 January 2012 04:30 (fourteen years ago)

90210 is a zip code, for one

unattractive on the inside (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2012 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

212 is pretty well known as NYC, just like 213 = California

unattractive on the inside (Neanderthal), Monday, 9 January 2012 04:33 (fourteen years ago)

man, this Common album really sounds incredibel

somebody call the brinks truck (D-40), Monday, 9 January 2012 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

newest one? yeah I really like it

Knowing what lyrics "scan as new york" means you listened to more than 30 seconds of Alicia Banks without closing your browser window in disgust; so there's probably a TuNeYardS thread you should be posting in, bruh

whiney, you got the order of capital-lowercase wrong there
also love that you came straight home and got on this thread.

Thug Luftwaffle (forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 January 2012 05:53 (fourteen years ago)

i'm well aware of the zip code/area code distinction, just pretend i said 707, 510, 213, or 504 if it bothers you that much, those are some actually notable rap area codes. i've never heard a rapper rep 212 and i'm not going to bother googling random azelia lyrics. brb though the tuneyards thread has new answers

chilli, Monday, 9 January 2012 06:09 (fourteen years ago)

why tf are u doofuses still talking about her smh

Thug Luftwaffle (forksclovetofu), Monday, 9 January 2012 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

thinking about it a bit more i think one of the things i most respond to in a rapper is nimbleness, which is one quality rick ross has none of whatsoever. yeah i loved crunk and lil jon is hardly nimble but the beats were, it was club music first and foremost - the beats rick ross chooses are like elephants sitting on top of elephants
