Simpin Ain't Easy: The Official Thread For Drake's Sophomore Album, TAKE CARE

I'm still wondering what makes this man get hip hop fans so up in arms about. I like the album in little chunks but trying to go through it is such an absolute chore. 40 provides interesting background music(even though you can confuse them with the other albums) and Drake has improved somewhat. My qualms about the album is that Drake asked (or forced) outside producers to submit their music to 40 which I find odd. I know he was going for a moody experience with it rather than a "I'm going to show you how great I am at rapping a la LL Cool J's Mama Said Knock You Out," but some reason it screamed he is afraid to go out of his comfort zone mostly which is kind of dumb for a relative newcomer.

As far as his shortcomings, to me it comes to a point where you either accept them (nasal delivery, choppy rap flow) and see them as contributing to the music in a unique way or you just fucking hate them and him and never listen to him again. I must admit I go back and forth with that.

Ok after writing that, now I see why people argue about him. haha

KDTrey5 favorited @jadande:
Drake compares himself to Kevin Durant (strike 1) b/c he says people want KD to fail (strike 2) Who wants KD to fail? bit.ly/rQ8QDA

this seems to bother drake more than anybody else considering the absolutely ridiculous fake southern accent he raps in every few songs

In his defense, he did spend summers with his father in Memphis, TN, but I never recall him doing a southern accent in his songs. Any examples?

um i always thought the problem people had with his nasal delivery is that it is unbearable and sometimes just painful to listen to (always been my problem with it)

not some signifier of inauthenticity, just annoying as fuck

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Thursday, 17 November 2011 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah it can get annoying especially when he does songs with a fast tempo. I'm hoping something weird happens to his voice so it can round off the edges. When he goes makes an "ummm" or "ehhh" sound it's like stabbing your eardrums.

I knowingly heard a Drake song for the first time today. It was the one XL have chosen to show a spirit of global pan-genre collaboration by recycling a Jamie XX beat that was itself from a recycled Gil Scott Heron album.

The song was awful, the combination of his voice and the autotune was like having some horrible slimy thing wriggling its tentacles in my face.

It's Jamie XX. He is part of the indie group The xx. They are a lo-fi type of band who claim to have inspiration from modern Hip Hop/R&B without having any of it being in their overall sound. Jamie has become a internet famous DJ since they are taking a break. He did a remix album of Gil Scott Heron's last album.

He co-produced "Take Care" (featuring Rihanna) that sampled one of his Gil-Scott Heron's remixed tracks.

owenf, Friday, 18 November 2011 00:07 (fourteen years ago)

ah ok, I liked that XX album but didn't really know who any of the ppl in it were.

it seems kinda normal that they would do a track for drake, actually

I heard two tracks from this yesterday. I didn't hate them. I just control of all of my bodily functions as I went into shock.

I'm going to listen to the rest today.

i heard the title track on the radio today and it sounded pretty decent, the rihanna parts anyway

quit /stalking/ me 2.0 (some dude), Friday, 18 November 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)

it's really just Drake's voice at this point. i mean i first time I heard him I thought he was called Drake cuz he was intentionally trying to sound like a duck

no jesus, no piece (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 November 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

no it's the way he raps too

tho given the makeup of tastemakers in 2011 maybe it's impt they have a rapper w/ whom they can directly identify

mon/ seeya/ chi 2.0 (k3vin k.), Friday, 18 November 2011 01:00 (fourteen years ago)

well granted, I am going off of the two songs I heard at the mall, but he didn't sound as bad.

but then again, the guest spot he did on The Game's album this summer was HORRIBLE.

"I love your ass like Milhouse loves Lisa/I love your ass like Ninja Turtles love pizza", that's sub-grocery bag....

k, 4 songs in, and I'm...digging this. it's production driven, and Drake isn't exactly lighting up the boards lyrically but he's functional and the songs are catchy. yea it's production driven but earwormy as hell.

everything I know is wrong now.

oh please man, you know he didn't 'pick up' any legitimate accent in memphis

shit is ALL OVER his songs, usually just a line or two at a time. there's one album track i hear on the radio sometimes where the whole song is in a horrible fake southern accent though.
