but feed the animals is a bunch of mashups
I have like 900 albums on my desk that i have to get through for this week, so I'll return to this thread when I've heard it, I guess.

1) i am not sure why this guy in particular is getting all the attention, i think it is TOTALLY fair to call this stuff mashups--if these aren't, what is--and tons of ppl have been doing them since like 2001. so why this dude? he doens't even seem to be a particularly media-friendly personality. i have to assume ppl actually like the WAY he does it beyond just the concept...
2) saying that night ripepr or whatever is exactly like listening to the radio is kinda disingenuous, it's a funny dis but we all know it's not an exact equivalent.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:58 (eighteen years ago)
3) don't know why i numbered those.

by Weezy F Baby at 01:48 PM Reply @RaptorAvatar: he took colored-peoples' music and made it white! what's not to like, right?? and since its white..its (probably) art.

I can't believe I missed this thread's delights.

Girl Talk does mash-ups, for sure, but his M.O. is a lot more than "lolmashup," though -- I mean, I'd heard plenty of terrible mash-ups before Night Ripper, but the reason that album clicked for me really had to do with the flow. It wasn't just slapped together like "hey rap song + rock song lolz!!" -- it was about dropping in samples at a rapid-fire pace that alternately disorient you ("wait, where do I know that from?") and hit your pop-music pleasure spots ("oh, shit, I love this song!"), all the while building this tapestry of sound that works as its own composition. At its best, there's an intricacy to it, and that's what I respect. (I want to withhold judgment until I've listened a few times, but I think I agree with J0rdan that Feed the Animals lacks some of the intrinsic build and contours that Night Ripper has).
― jaymc, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)
so it's a mashup with 10 songs in one track instead of 2, basically?
― some dude, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:09 (eighteen years ago)
that's what i'd sya.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:10 (eighteen years ago)
say

― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:19 (eighteen years ago)
the key to this is all in the first post:
All the usual ILM friendly faves mashed up into one 16 track extravaganza. Pavement, MIA, Neutral Milk Hotel, Annie, even a bit of Beatles and Genesis to keep Geir happy. What's not to like?

i mean, it really is all about the perhaps dubious pleasure of weezer + big pun or whatever. i don't think anyone would deny that...
― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:20 (eighteen years ago)
i dont remember any big pun - most of the rap was stuck on either 90s obvious biggie shit or like paul wall & fergie

you really can't invent a strawman this effective:
(Despite conscious, concerted efforts to like hip-hop, I've never been able to enjoy it... until now!)

that should be on a sticker on the cd

I have opted to pay $0.00 because: I may donate later I can't afford to pay I don't really like Girl Talk I don't believe in paying for music I have already purchased this album I don't value music made from sampling I am part of the press, radio, or music industry Other reasons

New album leak is a fake!
Yesterday, someone posted a fake "leak" of my upcoming album. I was not involved in this at all. The music posted had nothing to do with me. Please spread the word that the leak was fake.
Thanks
Gregg
