wait, i did what with e-40 too? --When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40)
There was some whiny comment that someone got to "Lightweight Jammin" before u.

i honestly have no idea what you're talking about, but i'm sure if was you self-consciously misinterpreting something in a self-aggrandizing way
― When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40), Monday, 14 November 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)
That was a dope song IMO

anyway, if jordan and whiney are done backseat driving this thread off of a cliff, i'd like to turn back to the album's content;
from what i've heard i like don trip more than starlito. i posted the 'letter to my son' vid in the ringtone thread & i dont think it got much love, didn't it exist in a pre-cee lo version?
― When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40), Monday, 14 November 2011 00:48 (fourteen years ago)
sorry that you called this mixtape a landmark and i asked what you meant by that!

a structure (as a building) of unusual historical and usually aesthetic interest; especially : one that is officially designated and set aside for preservation

so, exactly what i was saying
― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)
there have been fewer than ten historically important mixtapes in rap history? great point. can we get back on topic? j0 if you havent heard this record, dont post itt again
― When snap was real ... Thumbs up if you agree (D-40), Monday, 14 November 2011 00:54 (fourteen years ago)
that sounds like a completely enforceable rule
― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)
Trip is a deeper, more dexterous MC to my ears. If you listen to "Life," "4th Song" and the first couple of minutes on "Outtakes" (or "Karate in the Garage"), there's this pattern where Lito starts out and it's good and then Trip comes in and raises the stakes. (Most apparent on "Life").
"Letter to My Son" was first put up on You Tube in September 2009, when his son was two months old and he hadn't seen him in a month. The "recording booth" is his old bedroom in his mom's house, where he'd just moved back because of financial difficulties. The song sat on You Tube virtually unnoticed for a full year before it started to go viral and the labels started calling.
The story I'm working on is primarily about the two-year journey of that song.

anyway i have heard this record, i think it's pretty good, i don't know. it's not really the slice of rap music i'm exactly listening to. starlito actually sounds kinda like fred the godson.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)
Don Trip Fun Fact: Real name? Christopher Wallace

― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 01:16 (fourteen years ago)
i cant believe it was a controversial point that 'step brothers' is likely to be considered an important record because i've observed lots of writers and tastemakers like it.
anyway, lol @ the fred comparison -- you're probably not expecting me to say this but i know what you mean. its that performed-'meaningful' vocal style.
this tape is still on the periphery of my favorite tapes this year because i think their voices sometimes get too IM SO INTENSE WITH FEELING RIGHT NOW and not in a way that necessarily seems very musical to me. But I do think its unquestionably an accomplished record, and that it's more a matter of buying that style, than buying that they do a good job with that style.
or for comparison, I like Young Dolph's rap style a lot more, its up my alley in terms of performance -- but on the other hand, i don't think his tape from this year is quite as interesting or as good a full package as 'step bros' is

i think their voices sometimes get too IM SO INTENSE WITH FEELING RIGHT NOW
this is mostly my prob w/ it -- i think it's easy to get burnt out on this kinda thing to a certain extent... like i dig in theory what starlito's going for but i could never listen to all of these mixtapes that he puts out -- feel the same way about, like, main attrakionz misanthropy -- nowadays i'm much more likely to listen to stuff that is super musical (krit or ross or drake) or makes me laugh (riff raff, soulja boy) or does the I'M INTENSE thing in the service of something... greater (meek or gunplay or flocka)
― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)
yeah idk ilx ground to a halt there for like 10 mins

see, i feel this.
i've been catching up on some stoner/cloud/bandcamp rap things over the weekend and then I threw on the new WC where he's basically just barking at you for 45 minutes and it felt like "YES THIS IS WHAT RAP IS." So, yeah, I feel that these guys go in. Fuck being "musical" imo. 1988 forever.
― shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 November 2011 01:25 (fourteen years ago)
i'm really fucking sick of rap being "musical"

^the best raps are amusical. we need more dudes not afraid to rap in double fortissimo—props to Starlito and Don Trip
from the outside of this convo for what it's worth i have NO idea what 'musical' means as you guys are using. melody? production that incorporates live instruments or samples of live instruments?

curren$y is boring even with alchemist, Scotty is boring even with DJ Burn One, and Travis Porter is just boring
― shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 November 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)
in non-internet-rap news, the Alley Boy mixtape is mastered so poorly that it's practically unlistenable
― shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 14 November 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)
wait what the hell does travis porter have to do w/ any of that
also basically all of your opinions are wrong (i have no idea who scotty is)
― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 November 2011 02:09 (fourteen years ago)
