you people are so lame. don't you have anything better to do than dis artists you don't like? I have been a barenakedladies fan for 10 years and they have more talent in their little finger's than any of you guys have. your just jealous that you don't know how to make good music like they do. you probably like blink 182 or green day. just go back to your mothers basement timmy because you probably live with her and listen to green day and have nothing better to do than be on the internet all day.

and what's with that random arm that doesn't actually belong to any of them?

it belongs to the guy in the lower left. he's putting it through a letter.

richard wood johnson, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

this is gonna be the new dmb thread, innit.

Here's a bigger version of the pic, in case you want to do closer inspection:

Apparently there was also a more moderate version of the cover:

The one thing I don't get is the Pepsi logo on both covers... Were they like sponsored by Pepsi or something?

God, I hope so. I think Nick & Buzz are big BNL fans.

Hold on, you're ripping on them because they're not as cool as Sailor Moon? Way to come off like the shift supervisor at the poutine shack, King Retard.

in the larger picture you can see the blond highlights in fattyspecs' hair.

renegade bus (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

The bigger picture reveals that it's not dreadlocks the guy on the right is sporting, it's a jheri curl. So shame on you haters!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

The one in the hat looks like the BNL bitchass intern.

Funny only if you were out of your skull on nitrous oxide "at the time".

The best band by a huge mile & great CD too, November 23, 2004
Reviewer: Damon G. Bransom "Anime the choice of a New Generation" (Sydney) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first found out about the Ladies from the QuickTime samples of an old Mac OS 8 Install CD (There Apple Masters btw) & have been hooked ever since.

I have to say this is my favourite out of all there CD, I'm not saying it's there best or they have not done better or evolved musically since this CD as I believe they have. It's just one of my all time favourites.

The thing I love about the Ladies is there sense of fun, whimsy, heart, soul & mateship (listen to the commentaries on there DVD's there so funny!). Also the fact that musically there brilliant & Stephen Page has a voice that an angle would be envious of. Check out there live CD's cause when Steve sings 'Break Your Heart' live... well you know the reason I'm a huge fan & you should be too.

Just get this CD & the rest of them too & the DVD's, Inflatable dolls, T-Shirts, action figures, etc... I am sure the Ladies all need new kitchens or help putting there kids through school or retire to houses in the country. Also you will be doing yourself a huge musical favour too!

There music won't cure the common cold but my god it will make you happy your alive!

Oh my gosh these guys are awesome!, February 22, 2001
Reviewer: Mike Blume (CA United States) - See all my reviews
My friend Adam got me into BNL over winter break, and this is still my favorite album, absolutely tons of great songs, including my favorite song in the whole entire world, which I'm listening to right now, If I Had A Million Dollars, which is really incredibly beautiful, and funny, and romantic, all at once, I don't know how, plus there's the line "I'd buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that's cruel)" which always makes me think of this one girl I really really like (quite possibly the most wonderful human being in the universe) who's a BNL fan and a vegetarian just like me, oh, and the banter between verses, anyone here actually tried Kraft Dinner with Ketchup? The two tastes just don't mix, it goes in your mouth and you're like "oh, there's some Kraft Dinner, oh, there's some ketchup," completely separate, oh, Grade 9, I love, um, crazy's very weird, but very good, King of Bedside Manner's hilarious, and very loud and upbeat (helps keep me up when I'm pulling an all-nighter), um, so just buy the CD already, or borrow it, or something, you've got to hear these guys!

The N in N*SYNC stands for NERDS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

It's best to imagine the sounds each of them were making as this photographic wonderwork was snapped for the ages. Especially hatboy and goatee in the back there, goatee is all loud, monotone "AAAAAAAAAAA" and the hat is doing a nasally "nyeeeehhhhh" sound, while the two nerdlinger dudes in the bottom left are probably making back-of-the-throat gurgly noises, and the fat guy from N*Sync on the right is like "yeah boy" in a chipmunk voice.

Can't really imagine a thread titled "Most Faggoty-Looking Barenaked Ladies Member on This Album Cover" surviving ten years without mod intervention

― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, January 29, 2016 8:28 AM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

OTM. The fact that we're still seeing ""jokes"" like "What a redact" is a pretty clear indicator that there's no way for this thread to get escape velocity from its original premise. I'm sure many people who participated just wanted it to be "most dorky and uncool barenaked ladies member," but it wasn't.

It's long past time to lock thread IMHO.

i tried to do so for you all, but it's on y'all now.........

Gordon and Moxy Fruvous's Bargainville are two albums I still have an affinity for because they remind me so much of being 13

Still think they're both pretty good albums though hard to listen to now. For different reasons I guess.

BNL obviously went on to do a lot of garbage but it's pretty disingenuous to treat them like a novelty group or one-hit wonders, they've been around like 25 years now and they've written a lot of dumb songs but they obviously have some measure of talent. Always thought Maroon was a pretty damn great power pop album, at least.

six months pass...

I searched for the word 'retarded' to find this thread, unsuccessfully, just to post that the album that inspired it is celebrating it's 25th anniversary and as such Rhino is reissuing it on vinyl.

The press release features this image:

So this may be the new cover. So maybe the label/band/whatever agree that they all look like Cronenbergs...

Public service announcement: Please don't listen to this.

Impossible to say whether "Psycho Killer" or "Wishing Well" is the worse crime. I gave them a chance because I try to be open-minded, but no. This is not the vehicle to convert a hata to a non-hata: quite the contrary; I went into it not hating them and came out hating them.

musically, Monday, 19 February 2018 03:33 (eight years ago)

just stopping by as an actual disabled person to say: retard is a slur and if you try to justify tossing it around casually you're an ableist piece of shit, no fucking excuses, no whining about "pc culture" or whatever (and tbqfh mods should have done more than just removed it from the title, they should have actively pruned the posts laughing about it or deleted it and let a new BNL thread happen)

insofar as BNL goes, no strong opinions. got a mild giggle out of "ships and dip" and "fake nudes"

heliogabberlus, Monday, 19 February 2018 21:35 (eight years ago)

absolutely spot on mate, it's a garbage thread and should have been nuked a long time since.

calzino, Monday, 19 February 2018 21:53 (eight years ago)

Like as if putting [REDACTED] makes it less sneery + disablist somehow. Some fucking mods on here are more concerned about the welfare of anti-Semitic oxygen thieves, rather than garbage threads causing grave offence and hurt towards disabled people. It's just the way it is I'm afraid heliogabberlus.

calzino, Monday, 19 February 2018 22:00 (eight years ago)

Let the saga of the offensively-titled Barenaked Ladies thread finally draw to a close. There are 8 other BNL threads in existence - use one of them.

I tried to find the best solution for everyone on this board. You do realize that we mods get yelled at just as much for locking "classic threads" as for not locking them, right? We switched the title twice according to user suggestions in an attempt to find a workable middle ground. Apparently both of those workarounds continued to offend. We have many ilxors with mentally disabled family members, myself included. Some people are going to be more affected by words than others. We probably all try our best to treat each other well and not to be assholes.

Calzino, my concern about the poster who got banned two weeks ago was for their mental health, which is something you purport to care about if I'm reading you right. When I learned that their antisemitism had been established over a number of years and was not some recent development as a result of a mental break, I gave up on the issue completely.
