I have now heard two songs by this band that I like. And the video for Knights of Cydonia is amazing.
I feel weird even asking (though I'm plenty shameless): which album should I start with?
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:03 (seventeen years ago)
Origin Of Symmetry if you want 'em at their most rocking-out, Absolution if you want 'em at their most successfully ambitious.
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)
Don't be ashamed. I recently had a discussion with a friend where the topic was "good bands whom you associate with the worst music tastes" and Muse came out pretty much on top. As long as you don't prance around in their shirts or blather about how they're the greatest band of the decade or whatever, there's plenty to enjoy.
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)
Other 2 albums are REALLY bad, tho
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks. What's so bad about Black Holes.... The reviews make it sound like it's their best. Is it more electronic or something?
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:13 (seventeen years ago)
It's got a couple of decent songs but it's by far their most facile, limp record. Grandstanding suits them, and it's no coincidence that the best songs on BHAR are the two where they REALLY go for it (Take A Bow and Knights Of Cydonia). I dunno, tho, maybe you'll like it more! Try it.
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I'd rather hear them go for it. They sound to me like a cross between Rush and Supergrass. At least the songs I've heard so far.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:19 (seventeen years ago)
Which songs have you heard?
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)
New Born (which I thought was the superior song) and the aforementioned Knights of Cydonia (which has good parts but is made much better by the visuals).
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)
New Born IS the superior song. It's the lead-off track on OOS, which is a fun, kick-ass album. If you liked it, you'll like the record.
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)
Cool. I'll report back after I visit my buddy at Everyday Music.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:31 (seventeen years ago)
Don't be ashamed.
no, do be ashamed.
how are these mooks better/more 'groundbreaking' (whatever that means) than lcd soundsystem? im not even a big lcd guy, but srsly fuck a muse.
― Brohan Hari, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:31 (seventeen years ago)
Fucks sake NRQ, they're totally NOT groundbreaking, stop trying to troll me
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)
Honestly, I listen to plenty of groundbreaking music. I'm just curious about Muse because I heard a song that sounded good to me.
Fuck an LCD Soundsystem.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)
basically, that. plz don't bring up last night's embarrassing rants in today's shameless funseeking!
― claudestock carpentinieri (country matters), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 11:34 (seventeen years ago)
muse and queen occupy the same sphere for me: bombast that I can see why it's fun, but does nothing for me. muse are slightly less corny than queen tho, admittedly.
― rjberry, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)
Hellishly mastered.
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)
I have recently decided that Muse are quite good.
― chap, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:25 (sixteen years ago)
His voice is the weak link though.
Nate Carson never did get back to me.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)
It is perhaps a mistake to sound like Jeb Fuckley on amphetamines in EVERY song, but often I find it works quite nicely.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:32 (sixteen years ago)
I wish he'd be a bit less breathy and squeaky.
― chap, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:37 (sixteen years ago)
I remember being in a record shop when they were playing a Muse album, and I was like, "LOL, he sounds like Peter Hammill at 12 years old on this song, that's quite amusing... ah, hold on, he's still singing in the same voice on this song too... Jesus, he's doing it again!"
― Aw naw, no' Annoni oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)
Jeb Fuckley on amphetamines
Oh my god how did I not think of this description before!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
OK, I've just tried to listen to an entire album (Black Holes and Revelations) and didn't managed it without some heavy skipping. None of the songs are bad, but severe diminishing returns going on.
― chap, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)
That's their worst album. Listen to the middle two. They're much, much, much, much better.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:06 (sixteen years ago)
Jeb Fuckley
LOL, son of Bum Tickly (or Tickly Bum, if you prefer)
― Aw naw, no' Annoni oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)
I'll give Origin of Symmetry a try in a day or two. New Born is probably my favourite single of theirs.
xpost to Louis
― chap, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)
new Muse single sounds like Goldfrapp mixed with Dr Who mixed with Blondie Call Me mixed with T-rex
― djmartian, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)
No change, then.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)
This band -- like the band Elbow -- sounds like they'd be as dull as ditchwater.
OTOH, "Few people would dispute that Elbow have given us the album of the year," so WTF do I know?
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:19 (sixteen years ago)
(nothing, that's what.)
lol this lot and Elbow are pretty much at polar ends of mainstream British rock
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)
And oddly enough, both suck.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:40 (sixteen years ago)
lol
― Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 4 August 2009 22:42 (sixteen years ago)
You guys are all so wrong. Muse is one of the best bands of the past 10 years.
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)
Ned and I do not agree on everything. Sometimes, a British band comes along and my own critical faculties evaporate where his remain steadfast. It is my blessing, and my curse.
― the hubby space veggiescope (country matters), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 01:28 (sixteen years ago)
I like these guys a lot. Still haven't heard the first album, but like the two I have heard and the live one a bunch. Looking forward to the new album.
― unperson, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 01:32 (sixteen years ago)
xpost - Sorry Country Matters. I still haven't done my homework!
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 10:12 (sixteen years ago)
Ok I think they're abhorrent and listening to them gives me headache but I was watching their Wembley Stadium performance from a cpuple of years ago on tv and I'll admit they seem pretty good live, manage to sound very close and maybe better than they do on record.

Widdly guitar arpeggios. Trying to pass off lyrics like "snowflakes melt into the ocean at midnight" as profound. Gets old fast.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 3 November 2010 09:22 (fifteen years ago)
I repped for them upthread but in hindsight "Stockholm Syndrome" turned out to be the only one I liked, the rest was piff.

The guitar solo... will it never end?
― White Chocolate Cheesecake, Thursday, 28 June 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)
I keep waiting for The Drop, and then the "dubstep" bit to kick in. That's the only way they possibly could have this song even more of a too muchness.
― White Chocolate Cheesecake, Thursday, 28 June 2012 12:32 (thirteen years ago)

Muse asked to run Teignbridge District Council
I guess that Matt Bellamy's letter finally got through to the Jim'll Fix It production team.

Are all their most recent music videos still set in outer space like the early ones tended to
― Supper's Burnt (PaulTMA), Sunday, 22 July 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
Literally the worst band in the world.
― I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Saturday, 20 February 2021 12:21 (five years ago)
Probably but like Roy Chubby Brown you have to go out of your way to hear their music now.

There was like two hours of it on Sky Arts last night. Hence the revive.

Another reason to not subscribe to Sky.

It seems to be mostly cheaply made 30 minute "Then she made this movie" documentaries on various film stars, with Derek Malcolm - who I assumed was dead after watching some of these, he looks so frail - and various other talking heads.
― I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Saturday, 20 February 2021 16:18 (five years ago)
Wait is Derek Malcom not dead?
Tbf to Sky Middle Aged Dad Music there is about 5% actually decent content
Maybe not 5
― The Scampo Fell to Earth (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 20 February 2021 16:19 (five years ago)
Apparently still alive! 88!

I thought Matt Bellamy looked like a wanker before but ffs:https://www.mansonguitarworks.com/media/mageplaza/blog/post/8/6/86844_0_wide_ver1551312038.jpgHis sartorial style is a cross between Bono, Kanye West, and the singer from Maroon 5.

Bit of Mark King in there imo except Mark King made good records
