Please explain Muse to me

I have now heard two songs by this band that I like. And the video for Knights of Cydonia is amazing.

I feel weird even asking (though I'm plenty shameless): which album should I start with?

Origin Of Symmetry if you want 'em at their most rocking-out, Absolution if you want 'em at their most successfully ambitious.

Don't be ashamed. I recently had a discussion with a friend where the topic was "good bands whom you associate with the worst music tastes" and Muse came out pretty much on top. As long as you don't prance around in their shirts or blather about how they're the greatest band of the decade or whatever, there's plenty to enjoy.

It's got a couple of decent songs but it's by far their most facile, limp record. Grandstanding suits them, and it's no coincidence that the best songs on BHAR are the two where they REALLY go for it (Take A Bow and Knights Of Cydonia). I dunno, tho, maybe you'll like it more! Try it.

Yeah, I'd rather hear them go for it. They sound to me like a cross between Rush and Supergrass. At least the songs I've heard so far.

New Born (which I thought was the superior song) and the aforementioned Knights of Cydonia (which has good parts but is made much better by the visuals).

New Born IS the superior song. It's the lead-off track on OOS, which is a fun, kick-ass album. If you liked it, you'll like the record.

muse and queen occupy the same sphere for me: bombast that I can see why it's fun, but does nothing for me. muse are slightly less corny than queen tho, admittedly.

It is perhaps a mistake to sound like Jeb Fuckley on amphetamines in EVERY song, but often I find it works quite nicely.

I wish he'd be a bit less breathy and squeaky.

I remember being in a record shop when they were playing a Muse album, and I was like, "LOL, he sounds like Peter Hammill at 12 years old on this song, that's quite amusing... ah, hold on, he's still singing in the same voice on this song too... Jesus, he's doing it again!"

Oh my god how did I not think of this description before!

OK, I've just tried to listen to an entire album (Black Holes and Revelations) and didn't managed it without some heavy skipping. None of the songs are bad, but severe diminishing returns going on.

That's their worst album. Listen to the middle two. They're much, much, much, much better.

You guys are all so wrong. Muse is one of the best bands of the past 10 years.

Ned and I do not agree on everything. Sometimes, a British band comes along and my own critical faculties evaporate where his remain steadfast. It is my blessing, and my curse.

I like these guys a lot. Still haven't heard the first album, but like the two I have heard and the live one a bunch. Looking forward to the new album.

Ok I think they're abhorrent and listening to them gives me headache but I was watching their Wembley Stadium performance from a cpuple of years ago on tv and I'll admit they seem pretty good live, manage to sound very close and maybe better than they do on record.

Today is revive mediocre bands day to me.

Widdly guitar arpeggios. Trying to pass off lyrics like "snowflakes melt into the ocean at midnight" as profound. Gets old fast.
