Attack of the Grey Lantern is better. :P

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

What is "Little Britain"

lexmina (Pashmina), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never dreamt I'd see my favourite band and my least favourite television programme in the same four-word sentence

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

TOM BAKER + UNFUNNY, POORLY PERFORMED OBSERVATIONS OF ENGLISH ECCENTRICITY

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

i know what little britain is but have never seen it and have no desire to. it sounds shit.

i don't like mansun, although i don't loathe them like i loathe other britpop, and am frankly shocked that there are people thinking about them in 2006.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

Mansun may have had Tom Baker, but Little Britain didn't get him to read Brian Jones' death poetry. The show is singly the most unfunny, puerile waste of scheduling I have ever seen

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

"Brian Jones' death poetry"

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

Amazingly enough, Lex, sometimes when one likes a piece of music, one might like listening to it again from time to time, and when you listen to it, sometimes you think about the people who made it.

(x-post oh that "little britain". I haven't got a telly, so I haven't seen it. I thought there was a band called little britain, or something)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes when one likes a piece of music, one might like listening to it again from time to time

i think this is the crux of my not understanding re mansun! i can just about imagine liking them at the time, but 10 years on we are all older and wiser surely.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

I would far more associate the unambitious, cosy, stock, Andrex-soft witterings of LB with the current new-wave revivalists, or possibly the Coldplay set. They're all proponents of a cultural stagnancy which Mansun were plainly the deadliest of enemies with (until Little Kix, when their label forced them to submit).

There's never been a better time to talk about Mansun, with Paolo Nutini dragging British music to a new low...

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

mansun were boys who played guitars = cultural stagnancy at its most stagnant

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

you could win any argument with that sort of crass generalisation

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

and he often does!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Lex = ILX debate club captain.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Lex = ARGH.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

As a result of this thread, I listened to "Grey Lantern" again. Quite a lot of it still stands up very well.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

Besides, with bands like Oceansize, Aereogramme etc coming into prominence on these shores, surely the shadow of Mansun is as demarcated as it ever was?

(Said with straight face. Oceansize rock)

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

Who?

Louis, I emailed you. Reply.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Have done so...

Oceansize are a band who combine metal, post-rock and electronica, with a 3-guitar attack and effects pedals to die for. They are worth checking out. Honestly.

Louis Jagger (Haberdager), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

I sort of like and admire how the Lex is almost guaranteed to appear on thread about stuff he hates just to tell us all how much he hates it.

with Paolo Nutini dragging British music to a new low...

Paolo Nutini's parents own a very good chip shop where I have been often known to buy my lunch when I am on my break from work and don't give a toss about grease and spots and my weight. I realise this doesn't excuse his music (but it's better than James Blunt, if damning with faint praise is any consolation to him), but I can't bring himself to hate him entirely.

Mansun, on the other hand, were terrific. Classic, totally.

banriquit, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

I guess he must be now; it's been a while. If he wants the royalites to start flowing again he should lobby for some Mansun tracks to be included on the soundtrack to upcoming BBC1 time travel cop series Jump They Say.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

If you sing "Being a Girl" in a stupid voice, it does become a bog standard Franz track.

i just can't get through the solo album. so much clattery, so much singy, too much something. I love the work he did on the Anchoress album but I'm not enjoying the work she did on this.

akm, Friday, 11 August 2017 10:45 (eight years ago)

Just listening to this for the first time. Don't Poke The Bear is one of the worst openers I've heard in a long time. I know his voice was always an acquired taste but that is such a horrible vocal.

kitchen person, Sunday, 13 August 2017 14:23 (eight years ago)

I'm listening to the album for the first time right now, still on "Don't Poke the Bear", and yeah, I was pretty into it until the vocal came in. Definitely a Bold Choice.

He could have followed Six with this album. Nothing quite as good as I Can Only Disappoint U, though

I'm going to listen to ATTACK OF THE GREY LANTERN tonight.

the pinefox, Monday, 3 August 2020 17:43 (five years ago)

is he not #cancelled now

boxedjoy, Monday, 3 August 2020 17:47 (five years ago)

nah he was a pathetic ass but idk if 'drunkenly propositioning your tourmate on fbook chat' is full-cancel territory. like, obv v shitty but yellow card and 'do better' imo

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Monday, 12 December 2022 16:25 (three years ago)

a pattern has emerged :(

no excuse at all but he is fucked in the head and needs help as well as censure/punishment

imago, Monday, 12 December 2022 16:52 (three years ago)

honestly fuck him anyway tho, not gonna let this ruin Six but fuck relistening to his recent solo stuff (which was awful recriminatory bollocks anyway)

imago, Monday, 12 December 2022 16:53 (three years ago)

CAD and I are FB friends and she's posted obliquely about this over the years on her personal account, but didn't know the extent of it, and I have no reason to think she is anything other than utterly sincere and he is an absolute cunt

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 12 December 2022 17:20 (three years ago)

well as i say (as my post before the jump demonstrates), this is not a first offence!

imago, Monday, 12 December 2022 17:29 (three years ago)

he did not 'do better'

imago, Monday, 12 December 2022 17:29 (three years ago)

Somehow he and his lawyers blocked the story Laura Snapes had been working on for a while where she had talked to some of his victims. I'm glad he's finally getting called out in public. He's an awful human being and I doubt I'll listen to Mansun again.

kitchen person, Monday, 12 December 2022 20:10 (three years ago)

There's more? Ugh

imago, Monday, 12 December 2022 20:31 (three years ago)

As I say though, I tend to forgive the art more than the artist, especially if the art long pre-dates the awful behaviour. You will prise Six from my cold dead hands etc, but Draper now? The wolves can have him

imago, Monday, 12 December 2022 20:36 (three years ago)

He seems to have gone massively downhill in recent years. I liked his first solo album, but fuck knows what has happened to him

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 11:37 (three years ago)

i believe CAD wrote a lot of that first solo album so maybe that's part of the issue.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Tuesday, 13 December 2022 14:57 (three years ago)

That 'Things People Want' song sounded like a lost single from Mansun at their best.
Strange to think just a few years down the line, everything is now in the bin, completely
