i may have mentioned this on another Don Cherry thread (or a terry riley thread), but there's a tape of the two of them playing sometime in the mid-70s that is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. it's reallyreallyreally beautiful.

Ooh, this has a good handful of things that I'd always felt trepidation about searching. I only own Brown Rice, Mu, CC and LibMus, and had always worried that his '80s stuff was gonna be butt (wasn't that when he was drying out?)

I haven't listened to it in a while: Cherry + electronics, late 60s I think, I must dig it out. You got to admire his willingness to tkae chances. I haven't heard that Terry Riley thing. (xp)

man, i feel like it's every other day I find out about some awesome sounding Don Cherry record. mentioned it elsewhere, but the old dreams new dreams recordings are incredible! another good one maybe not mentioned here is Blue Lake, early 70s live stuff. A lot of Don on piano. Then there's also a great Lou Reed bootleg from 1976 with Cherry sitting in. The guy got around!

Moki Cherry top of my list as I missed it when it was in the UK. Not sure if it's been mentioned upthread, but Neneh Cherry's memoir has a lot of really great stuff on Don and Moki, very moving.

A week ago I signed a contract with Swedish Modernista to publish the Don cherry biography. I'm so happy! Finally it will be finished, hopefully by the end of this year. And – hopefully again – it will be out some time during 2027.

The live tracks with Jean Schwarz are crazy too, DC sounds great on the ngoni. Great mix!

Assuming you mean me but yeah for sure. I realized that when I made it almost five years ago (how is this possible?) I never really finished it, so I rounded it out with a few more tracks, should be a fun journey. Couldn't think of a better title so may change if one occurs to me

ha you subscribe too cattedrale? I always find him fascinating even when I’m not a huge fan of the artist he’s focusing on. I also helped him with some factual information about Freddie Webster.

I subscribe too, but most of the time his pieces are too obsessively detail-focused for me, almost Phil Schaap-level. "What brand of shoelaces did Charlie Parker buy the day before he recorded 'Lover Man'? There are three different accounts; we'll compare them all in today's newsletter." He helped with some deep archival stuff when I was writing my Cecil Taylor book, though, and is a generally good dude.

I do subscribe. I mostly don't have time to read what he sends, but of course my ears perked up at this one. He has something of the old guard bebop purist about him, it's kind of amusing. Just the way he framed the bit about DC's pocket trumpet ("Cherry’s solos are commonly faulted for being out of tune and lacking the power of a standard trumpet.") as if it was the received wisdom from the jazz oracle as opposed to a minority opinion among conservative listeners, thought it was telling.

He's one of the most inventive people to ever play the instrument and he's talking like it's a shame he didn't sound more like Fats Navarro or something
