My world is kinda shattered now! Well anyway she's typically super-great, is all.

The part of that article that weirded me out, incidentally, was the description of Kreayshawn as "hypnotically confident." Compared to most musicians, she does not strike me as remotely confident. She seems like an incredibly normal person who's just being trotted around so everyone can be interested in her. She doesn't even say much! Just "hi, I'm Kreayshawn, which is a fact you care about for reasons that don't have much to do with me. I'm going to check Twitter now."

if people are looking for funny Edith her "letters to women's magazines" on the awl and the hairpin are hilarious

fables of frogbs (lpz), Friday, 11 November 2011 23:52 (fourteen years ago)

i had to stop at "house of chicken and waffles" lest be overwhelmed by the predictablity

fauxmarc, Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

you were gonna go get some chicken and waffles?

Number None, Saturday, 12 November 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

the 'short story' she wrote about a fart that runs away from home" column

nabisco is joking here right? because...just no. no.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Saturday, 12 November 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

WHY WOULD YOU WRITE THAT

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Saturday, 12 November 2011 05:19 (fourteen years ago)

this really is one of the most obnoxiously written things i've ever seen. i don't even know why playing up that she's 'funny' would be a defense for her since all the constant attempts at levity are the most painful part of the piece.

some dude, Saturday, 12 November 2011 06:31 (fourteen years ago)

i dont think that you and she share similar senses of humor tbh

http://thehairpin.com/tag/letters-to-the-editors-of-womenss-magazines/

^^^ the letters to the editors thing i was talking about. and stuff like "winter byofriend" (http://thehairpin.com/2010/12/the-winter-boyfriend) which i think is what EZ is really *good* at, these kind of absurdist fragments that clock in around 200 words and dont really have a point or a thesis. like nabisco says its interesting to watch magazine editors see that shes funny and talented and has a big following and try to use her--and then be unable to recapture in a magazine piece what makes her so good as a blogger.

nb my guess is that whiney and lex and al will all hate the letters to the editors and winters boyfriend, so they may be less interested in the untranslatability of EZ than i am

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

which ones are the real letters and which ones are the fake letters

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:24 (fourteen years ago)

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:30 (fourteen years ago)

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:37 (fourteen years ago)

yeah like i said its not really your "style"

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:39 (fourteen years ago)

word

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

whiney I think you'd be into this one

Thin and sad. Or, if it's an option, extra thin and suicidal. Or, if at all possible, a skeleton that killed itself. Ashes that crumbled off a skeleton that killed itself. A gust of wind blowing through the eye socket of a skeleton that killed itself. A fart seeping from the asshole of a corpse that shit itself to death. In case those are ones I can choose.

Edith Z., Brooklyn

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:44 (fourteen years ago)

the more I read these fake letters the more I like them actually, whiney in some ways she's a female version of you, so vulgar and crass

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

I just read all those letters and I actually like her a lot now but I'm still not going to read that nyt article

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:06 (fourteen years ago)

youre not really missing out on anything

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:07 (fourteen years ago)

I wish my last name started with a Z. then I could sign everything with just a "Z." and it'd be so authoritative, you can't get any further behind in the alphabet than Z., unless youre greek or russian or something

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:09 (fourteen years ago)

omg those letters

i think she shares her sense of humor with suck.com circa 1998

some dude, Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)

i think a lot of the internet does!

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

not an excuse

fauxmarc, Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

some dude who are some internet writers you think are funny

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:47 (fourteen years ago)

those letters are first class

ogmor, Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

sorry i didn't realize one had to have favorite internet humorists to criticize an internet humorist -- i will bow out and apologize for my hubris

some dude, Saturday, 12 November 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

lol dude I just want to know what you find funny is all

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 15:00 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i dunno -- obv i read a lot of online writing but a lot of the stuff i find funny is not primarily about being comedic or is by people i know irl and find funny in that context, so hard question to answer.

some dude, Saturday, 12 November 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

yeh I can't really think of ppl I 'go-to' for funny material except the SA twitterati

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 15:21 (fourteen years ago)

marina hyde is pretty much my standard for humour

this woman...i can't even

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Saturday, 12 November 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

lol, nuff said.

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

so max is "a lot of the internet" doing something inherently a defense of it? because tbh i feel like anyone who hasn't moved on from that very might magazine-style beating you over the head with its cleverness writing kinda deserves to be clowned

some dude, Saturday, 12 November 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

the other possibility is that the tastemakers on the internet are also people who grew up on the internet so

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Saturday, 12 November 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not sure what that means or what it's in reference to

some dude, Saturday, 12 November 2011 17:13 (fourteen years ago)

i dont really know! it doesnt really bother me, i still laugh at it. im not sure that comedy needs to "move on" every 10 years? and im not sure that might magazine is quite the right reference, either. but i never really read suck or might, i was still in middle school when that stuff was big.

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

like i dont really see "letters to the editors of womens magazines" getting published on suck. im not sure it would fit...

that being said "default blog voice" is still suck.com-y (and early gawker-y, choire sicha and elizabeth spiers and those folks), and a lot of people complain about how similar it sounds. (arguably edith in her regular day-to-day blogging is doing a fairly new and interesting "blog voice"). i dont know, like i said, its not something that bothers me.

max, Saturday, 12 November 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

yeah obviously there doesn't need to be like a huge sea change, the shifting trends in writing styles are definitely more subtle and complex than that, i'm oversimplifying a bit. but the background i'm coming at this from is being at pitchfork fairly early on and being kind of weary of the cutesy witty tone that was very pervasive there back then, and trying for something not necessarily serious or humorless but just a bit less precious and eager to please. so to be still surrounded by that shit 10 years later is exhausting for me.
