I have made it a personal policy to avoid anything on the McDonald's menu that isn't classic McDonald's food; no "fajitas", no McRib, no lobster roll... none of that shit

I did break policy for the McDLT, because it kept the hot side hot and the cool side cool, also at the time I hated the environment and wanted to contribute to its destruction

Put me in the "I really like Edith Zimmerman, maybe especially the 'short story' she wrote about a fart that runs away from home" column. It's weird, though, watching the Times magazine try and find a way to just let her "be herself" inside it. Like Max says, sometimes it just sits wrong in the format. Even the free-form "Riff," apparently!

Once upon a time there was a fart who ran away and lived in a tree. Her mom was like “OMG you’re going to get lost, come back down and hide inside this blanket,” but the fart was like “Literally Mom shut up, let me live!!!” But it was a sad story because the fart got picked up by the wind and she died. :(

The part of that article that weirded me out, incidentally, was the description of Kreayshawn as "hypnotically confident." Compared to most musicians, she does not strike me as remotely confident. She seems like an incredibly normal person who's just being trotted around so everyone can be interested in her. She doesn't even say much! Just "hi, I'm Kreayshawn, which is a fact you care about for reasons that don't have much to do with me. I'm going to check Twitter now."

this really is one of the most obnoxiously written things i've ever seen. i don't even know why playing up that she's 'funny' would be a defense for her since all the constant attempts at levity are the most painful part of the piece.

^^^ the letters to the editors thing i was talking about. and stuff like "winter byofriend" (http://thehairpin.com/2010/12/the-winter-boyfriend) which i think is what EZ is really *good* at, these kind of absurdist fragments that clock in around 200 words and dont really have a point or a thesis. like nabisco says its interesting to watch magazine editors see that shes funny and talented and has a big following and try to use her--and then be unable to recapture in a magazine piece what makes her so good as a blogger.

nb my guess is that whiney and lex and al will all hate the letters to the editors and winters boyfriend, so they may be less interested in the untranslatability of EZ than i am

yeah i dunno -- obv i read a lot of online writing but a lot of the stuff i find funny is not primarily about being comedic or is by people i know irl and find funny in that context, so hard question to answer.
