Resisting fanboy posting.

i'm just baiting these two goofs & jordan smartly dodged it

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

tbf whiney's mag only gave quik 7/10

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 05:06 (fourteen years ago)

has whiney been to drake's listening party?

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 05:15 (fourteen years ago)

I'm stuck imagining a parallel universe where Drake vocoder-mumbles Quik one-liners while Quik apologises for everything all the time but in his perky voice.

Tim F, Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:28 (fourteen years ago)

That would be the best album ever, eh Tim?

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:43 (fourteen years ago)

It's not exactly number one on my dream collabos list

Tim F, Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:46 (fourteen years ago)

Hahahaa nooo doubt.

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 06:58 (fourteen years ago)

speaking of LTTP i totally get now why some people's favorite track on that is "shades".....

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

I think mine's still "Looking for Love"

no jesus, no piece (Neanderthal), Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

jt's drake piss-take on "shades" renders drake himself entirely redundant

listening now, LTTP still blows me the fuck away

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 17:39 (fourteen years ago)

LTTP is great besides fucking Diddy.

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

Diddy is frequently the best part!

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Thursday, 10 November 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

SMOKE WEED LISTEN TO SADE

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Thursday, 10 November 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Thursday, 10 November 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

yeah ren ur doin it rong

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

i hope everyone who thinks i'm an idiot for loving this album at least recognizes what the RONGest post itt is

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

there's no way to separate LTTP from diddy, anyway. it would be like saying that a clint eastwood directed movie also starring clint eastwood was great, except for clint eastwood's acting. well, he also directed the movie, so it's a pretty tough distinction to make.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

ren should have to go get us all some cheesecake just for saying that

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

otm I like strawberry marble cheesecake

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

j0rd iyo what's the best produced track on this

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

chocolate lime cheesecake for me please

oh man there is a market every sunday 2 minutes from my house and the cheesecake stall there a) sells some of the most delicious cheesecake i have ever eaten b) is manned by such a hott boy, who, i assume, also bakes the cheesecakes

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

well i'm gonna throw out the just blaze track bcuz while it's incredibly dope it's kind of in it's own category. like i'd rather talk about that beat in comparison to shit off the blueprint or something than other beats on this album.

otherwise my favorite two beats are the opening track, "doing it wrong" or "look what you've done"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

er, three beats

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

diddy making a cornball song like "coming home" genuinely emotionally affecting might be one of his greatest accomplishments as a performer

Actually this would be kinda OTM for "Gran Torino"?

Tim F, Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

nah, the kid actors were the worst part of 'gran torino'

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

fair point.

Tim F, Thursday, 10 November 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

Ok, I'll get y'all some cheesecake.

I'm sorry, though, I like LTTP a lot, but Diddy is not and will never be "genuinely emotionally affecting" as a performer, to me. He's way too stiff and unnatural.

lex's post about the self-absorption of the lyrics/total lack detail about other people is probably the best criticism that will be written about this album & besides the (admittedly improved but still often) awful rapping is it's greatest fault. it's a really repulsive quality, like people who interrupt you when you're talking to them & clearly weren't even listening to what you were saying and then just talk about themselves endlessly. wouldn't be such a problem if the whole thing weren't seemingly geared towards inspiring sympathy? idk, i guess this is a kanye thing. i find drake at his best while either singing or when he's most blasé & detached; i think a big reason he's improved as a rapper is he's ditched (for the most part) attempts at humour or overly emotional delivery. i kind of like his flatter, colder, more angular style; his attempts at dynamic or like, increasing intensity throughout a verse, are usually pretty bad, but there aren't too many of them. the production is obviously the highlight & is best at it's most moody submarine music/noodly sad synths, but it's all really really good. pretty great album on the whole

fav songs are

lloyd banksfein (flopson), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

i know this has been discussed a lot lately on rap threads but: is rick ross the best rapper in the world right now? can't think of anyone who's had as many standout verses or whose features/album i look forward to more atm

lloyd banksfein (flopson), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

Also, is Andre's verse kind of awkward here? Sounds like it would be better read than rapped...

"I know its hard to hear but I'm a Realest." (rennavate), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:35 (fourteen years ago)

when rawse DIDN'T start rapping in the reema major video i was so relieved

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

rawse = space filler to me tbh

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

it's a good qn though but surely nicki/yela/tip, anyway. can see meek mill getting there in time.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

your take on ross is so 2+ years ago lex gwtp

lloyd banksfein (flopson), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

i wouldnt go that far but there is an emptiness to Ross that keeps him from ever being 'best rapper' imo

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

i dont think yela is anywhere near it. agreed about meek mill

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:39 (fourteen years ago)

he hasn't changed all that much to me! when he pops up i think "oh it's you again" and nothing sticks, ever (apart from a couple of his verses with meek mill)

i really pray he doesn't appear on teedra's album just cuz she's on his label

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

ross is way ahead of meek mill imo

lloyd banksfein (flopson), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

and yeah, drake's personality is still the biggest stumbling block for me and i don't think i'll ever get over it. or i feel like, if there's ever an album where you'll get over it for the music, it'd be this one, and i still can't make that leap

to me its just that he's chosen hip-hop to be his vehicle when the kind of music he makes doesn't fit into that framework. His whole approach . Hip-hop's language, its way of speaking & of bragging, has always been the language of the struggle & it feels like he tries to co-opt that language and it just comes across as blatant cynical branding imo, instead of organic understanding.

AFAP Raggett (D-40), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

as a rapper?? no way. meek mill connects w/ people in a way ross never will

but its all relative, ross has improved & everyone else has gotten worse

lloyd banksfein (flopson), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

what the hell is wrong with you guys

MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

meek mill does not connect with me the way ross does

lloyd banksfein (flopson), Thursday, 10 November 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

i'm actually right in between flopson & lex on this one though -- obvi ross has improved greatly as a rapper and i think as long as he keeps up the writerly style he'll be important. possibly the biggest rapper (no joke intended) in the game. but not really the best. he's not tapping into that tier that Boosie did, or the lineage of guys who resonated as real legends imo
