lex how wld u feel abt another critic or even just poster coming into a thread abt mariah carey or idk any other pop star u think has value & criticizing ppl liking or even just listening to it as "fuckin herd mentality!" ? u are being ridiculous imo
most of the posters itt were not drake fans and only listened to it because it was this week's critical conversation

m@tt remember i love sade

if any artist leaves me NO motivation to listen to their album just to 'keep up' it's Drake -- he'll have like 20 songs in heavy rotation over the next year, a quarter of which will be from this album. i really don't feel like i'm missing out on anything.
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:18 (fourteen years ago)
xxxpost j0rdan's been posting about how he's been thinking this might be good for months!
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:18 (fourteen years ago)
you should prob give it a spin, it's pretty great
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)
xpost yeah def get the sade thing
it's just sometimes lex i feel like you shit on certain things because they have kind of an "NPR" appeal you know?
― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:20 (fourteen years ago)
maybe when it's on spotify i'll put it on but the idea of hunting for a leak and making a point to put it on my ipod and spend an hour with it at work is like NO
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:21 (fourteen years ago)
i won't argue w/ that
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:21 (fourteen years ago)
(i hope you were making a reference to the nicki minaj line there)
what is NPR? i only know it as that place that ann powers writes for, often excellently

national public radio..sorry..i guess here it is shorthand for a certain kinda boring adult middlebrow appeal? like i bet there's a BBC radio station that would be equivalent in tone (bbb6 maybe?)
― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:24 (fourteen years ago)
radio 2! and haha yeah 6music as well even if it likes to think of itself as hipper.
all i'm trying to do is interrogate what records get default critical attention and why. really hate it when every critic on my timeline is talking about the same mediocre major label release, all of them seem beholden to the same blog leak or press release. they all seem to be followers, not leaders
― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)
fight the power bro
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)
I think lex just gets mad when critics pay attention to something that didn't get the lex seal
― ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:33 (fourteen years ago)
fwiw the only thing i've written publicly about drake was pretty much primarily critical so al's complaint doesnt really register for me either
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)
which complaint?
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)
that we listened to the album so we're all drake stans collecting dandelions
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:42 (fourteen years ago)
well yeah obv not everyone itt is a fan but j0rdan and whiney are pretty disappointing tbh
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:43 (fourteen years ago)
fwiw if i was asked to publish a review somewhere that didn't have to be positive at all i'd download it right this second
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 01:44 (fourteen years ago)
lex keep fighting the good fight, drake is garbage, y'all are turning into dandelion enthusiasts
i knew there was a reason i clicked on this thread

so, not much talk about the rapping on this rap record. is it any good?
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)
Certainly better than the shit trashbag flow of his previous abortions. Dude isn't Kane or anything but def gets the Rick Rock Honorary most improved trophy
― Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:23 (fourteen years ago)
*Rick Ross
I counted one hashbag on the whole record
― Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:24 (fourteen years ago)
three songs in, nodding my head to the production for the most part - i've always much preferred drake's r&b side to his rapping - atmospherically this alright. drake's rapping has certainly improved from his nadir but improving from actively bad to inoffensively ignorable isn't a game-changing achievement or anything.
still, not despising this like i thought i would
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)
after four songs still no grocery bags i've noticed but then he's not really rapping all that much
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:43 (fourteen years ago)
from sales of this album he should finally be able to afford that surgery to move his eyes closer to the center of his face
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:49 (fourteen years ago)
"underground kings" is pretty underwhelming, people are feeling this? in this environment it'll be the hardest thing msot people hear on the radio but it's solidly soft-serve as far as rap bangers go. what 'city' is he 'doing it for' again? lol
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)
did kendrick just say "nymphet"? i could use more nabokov references in my rap generally
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)
nikki had to go and ruin the best flow of the record with a grocery bag
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 05:20 (fourteen years ago)
wow i'm fucking with "lord knows"
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 05:24 (fourteen years ago)
well the back half or so of this is kinda just there, huh
so this album was kind of a pleasant surprise in some respects - you just wait for drake to make you want to turn it off but the best thing that can probably be said about this is that it's extremely listenable (not sure how that'll apply to repeat listens). sarge otm when he said that drake made the best album he had in him - which is still just a 6/10 or so but much better than i was expecting - he admirably suppressed his most hateable tendencies and rode his strengths, which mostly is his atmosphere - even if it comes off a bit samey
sarge should be shot for comparing the production to LTTP, though, straight up
― MODS DID 10/11 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 06:00 (fourteen years ago)
Ironically I wasn't motivated to listen to this any time soon but lex's visceral hatred is weirdly compelling?
OTOH I tend to trust k3vin on these things and there are a lot of 6/10 records out there.

"IF THAT'S YOUR POSITION.....WELL IT WASN'T LAST NIGHT"
"guys while you are listening to Drake, Me'Shell is playing "Leviticus: Faggot" to EMPTY ARENAS! THIS IS ON YOU"
"time for the Blue Slide Park thread"
"from sales of this album he should finally be able to afford that surgery to move his eyes closer to the center of his face"
Neanderthal killing it itt.

― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Wednesday, 9 November 2011 06:15 (fourteen years ago)
"lord knows" is definitely the cut off of this - i honestly can't tell if i actually dig drake's rapping on that or if that beat obscures the tone of his voice so much that the competence he brings to the table is enough
i'm no rawse fan either but he brings it too
