"the real her". another song predicated on being proud of a girl for something that's nothing to do with him. he's the kind of boy that gets told "you're not my father" every time he gets dumped.

"if something isn't right then who will i complain to" god he even admits that all he does is moan.

the drums sound shit again. there's so little going on in the arrangement but no one's turned the drums down concomitantly - they need to be as soft as the spacey synths, but as it is they're sharp and jarring.

for all that most of his songs are centred around either A Girl who he places on a pedestal or His Own Navel, he's remarkably bad at characterisation - i don't feel like there's been a single interesting detail about anyone he's described. it's just totally empty of personality.

"look what you've done" could be a decent narrative if he wasn't droning it like a call centre worker reading from a script

I'M SO BORED

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

like does he put any effort into his vocals? at all?

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

"hell ya fuckin right" is probably the best so far, i like the beat and wayne is largely okay on it, even if the chorus is another complete damp squib. love that epic synth noise though.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

THANK GOD ONLY ONE MORE TO GO.

"practice".

oh ugh this is his skeaziest yet. "all those other men were practice for me" like he's a dirty old man talking to a sex trafficking victim in a filthy brothel. DNW

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:28 (fourteen years ago)

in short: this is the worst album i have heard this year and drake needs to die.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:28 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not gettin at you lex but, cf the watch the throne thing, are you listening to this out of curiosity or to exorcise some bile or what?

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

that's an either/or?

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)

you can't react with bile if you listen out of curiosity?

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

actually though i listened to it For Work.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:02 (fourteen years ago)

it's good that lex didn't have any opinions about this album before he started listening to it

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:11 (fourteen years ago)

i didn't though? i had opinions about the singles, and about drake. i listened to the album in order to have opinions about it specifically.

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

you're really gonna claim you listened to this with fresh ears?

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:13 (fourteen years ago)

are people not allowed to opine on artists they already have opinions about...

i already loved ciara, should i not have talked about or reviewed basic instinct?

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

actually though i listened to it For Work.

ha, that's all i was wondering; you'd just seemed v ambivalent about the idea of curiosity listening wrt records that you know you're gonna hate, i can see how professionalism is something diff.

Abattoir Educator / Slaughterman (schlump), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:17 (fourteen years ago)

no i get the curiosity thing, i was just SMHing about everyone leaping at it the minute it leaked as though they couldn't wait, as though they had nothing better to check out first, in a way that they wouldn't for many other artists

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

whether you hate or love drake, ou can't deny this isn't a big cultural event

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

i don't really like the idea that the "biggest" albums should automatically be at the front of the queue when it comes to what we choose to listen to, or that the "conversation" is more important than the music

i trust everyone will be on the meshell ndegéocello album as soon as it's out next week? or because she's not a platinum-selling artist does that make you want to bother less?

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

yep, it makes me want to bother less. in fact, I don't think I'm gonna listen to it at all now.

ASPIE Rocky (dayo), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 14:27 (fourteen years ago)

shut up you 2 that was a hilarious lex liveblog

flopson, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 15:31 (fourteen years ago)

i will not apologize for eagerly anticipating and listening to the drake album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 November 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's a bit odd to castigate people for listening to the Drake album right when it leaks or whatever. I listen to all kinds of music all day every day, as I'm sure most people on here do. It's not gonna effect my ability to listen to other stuff if if choose to download Take Care when it leaks. Right now, for example, i'm listening to the Cousin Fik tape which Lex recommended on the gun sounds thread. It's really good!

Number None, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

One thing I think is off-putting about the Weekend's presence here is that Abel's character is way skeezier and creepier than Drake ever is. Drake's conflicted, but he seems to ultimately have this empathetic streak to him that the Weeknd only ever shows obliquely.

the rest of that quote is actually p interesting and maybe even v otm

full quote:

I'm really scared for my generation, you know. The thing that scares me most is Tumblr. I hate what Tumblr has become. Because it like, it reminds me of those clique-y girls in high school that used to make fun of everyone and define what was cool, but in five years, when you all graduate, that shit doesn't matter. No one gives a fuck about that shit. Instead of kids going out and making their own moments, they're just taking these images and living vicariously through other people's moments. It just kills me. Then you'll meet them and they're just the biggest turkey in the world. They don't actually embody any of those things. They just emulate. It's scary man, simulation life that we're living. It scares me.

So, on "Look What You've Done": first verse about his mom, second his uncle?
