why does he keep repeating shit? it makes him sound like he keeps forgetting the words. and another total fail of a chorus there. quoting birdman and referencing UGK (kmt at his nerve) just highlights the total lack of energy.

seriously though where is this amazing production? it's all the same dreary synths that i guess are meant to signify ~emotional bleakness~ and it's all completely monochrome - LTTP and LvM comparisons way way offbase, the thing with those albums is that while they had gorgeous textures you could vibe out to all over them they also had a sense of motion, constant tangents and surprises and inventiveness running through them. this has...drums that are a bit too loud.

the fact that it's a drake album means i won't ever love it as much as those (obv)

but you can't get away from the fact that it's a drake album! his voice and persona are so foregrounded and there isn't a whole lot else. "lord knows" is the first beat i'm feeling, that actually raises itself up from a prone position of self-pity - i mean it's not an amazing beat but a decent rapper could really make something of it y'know. that is not drake, who appears to think we should feel sorry for him because he hates himself for being interested in strippers.

this sounds like ass. drums are too loud and his voice is uncomfortably high in the mix, it feels like he's right in your ear and it is GROSS. as are the lyrics. seriously this dude is justifying fucking around by saying the the other girl only looks good on camera and he's meant to be a paradigm shift in hip-hop attitudes? such bullshit.

GOD STOP SAYING "ARE YOU ME ARE YOU ME" OVER AND FUCKING OVER AGAIN LIKE IT'S A HOOK YOU INADEQUATE PIECE OF SHIT

"doing it wrong". this is the first track that sounds vaguely okay - still completely nothingy but his higher register is easier to take (more anonymous ie doesn't sound like him) and the chorus hints at a pretty melody. please come back when it's finished!

"the real her". another song predicated on being proud of a girl for something that's nothing to do with him. he's the kind of boy that gets told "you're not my father" every time he gets dumped.

"if something isn't right then who will i complain to" god he even admits that all he does is moan.

the drums sound shit again. there's so little going on in the arrangement but no one's turned the drums down concomitantly - they need to be as soft as the spacey synths, but as it is they're sharp and jarring.

for all that most of his songs are centred around either A Girl who he places on a pedestal or His Own Navel, he's remarkably bad at characterisation - i don't feel like there's been a single interesting detail about anyone he's described. it's just totally empty of personality.

"look what you've done" could be a decent narrative if he wasn't droning it like a call centre worker reading from a script

"hell ya fuckin right" is probably the best so far, i like the beat and wayne is largely okay on it, even if the chorus is another complete damp squib. love that epic synth noise though.

ha, that's all i was wondering; you'd just seemed v ambivalent about the idea of curiosity listening wrt records that you know you're gonna hate, i can see how professionalism is something diff.

no i get the curiosity thing, i was just SMHing about everyone leaping at it the minute it leaked as though they couldn't wait, as though they had nothing better to check out first, in a way that they wouldn't for many other artists

whether you hate or love drake, ou can't deny this isn't a big cultural event

I think it's a bit odd to castigate people for listening to the Drake album right when it leaks or whatever. I listen to all kinds of music all day every day, as I'm sure most people on here do. It's not gonna effect my ability to listen to other stuff if if choose to download Take Care when it leaks. Right now, for example, i'm listening to the Cousin Fik tape which Lex recommended on the gun sounds thread. It's really good!

One thing I think is off-putting about the Weekend's presence here is that Abel's character is way skeezier and creepier than Drake ever is. Drake's conflicted, but he seems to ultimately have this empathetic streak to him that the Weeknd only ever shows obliquely.
