Smoke Ring For My Halo is such a gorgeous freaking record. I heard it in a store the other day, Googled some lyrics, and was surprised as to what it was. I had checked out some clips long ago and never followed up, but this was really, really immediately striking to me, and I picked it up the next chance I got. And I'm so not in this headspace right now; that vast majority of what I've been listening to the past six months is metal. The vibe he conjures is so immediate and evocative; I love everything about it.

any plans for a new record?

i'd heard there should be one before the end of the year, but have heard nothing more

This song is so awesome and slackerish. The beginning sounds a lot like Pavement, but then turns into something so much more amazing.

New single Loading Zones is really good

Another new song. Sadly, it's boring.

But isn't that his shtick? To always make the same boring song? Which usually is great btw.

The melodies are weaker. He becam too monotonic and lost the melancolic atmosphere.

"bassackwards" is amazing imo

i don't remember which new one i heard recently but i too was disappointed

The slightly warped sound of Bassackwards is great. That song flows majestically towards the delta.

Yup. The first verse wasn’t even all that. writers using the word “bay” is usually a bad sign
I think Loading Zones is much better

I enjoyed the song right up to the point where I thought, “That was a pretty good song,” then looked at the time and realized there were four plus minutes left.

had felt like poster above when it comes to singles so far, but this album is great, especially after the first few tracks. love the mild production variety!

the sum of the album is better than the individual tracks, yes. But my god, 80 minutes is a lot.

he wrote one near-perfect song in Wakin On A Pretty Day but everything else has felt like rehashes of it or just doesn't come close

"runner ups" is his near-perfect song. he has several! but it's true that many of them seem to have ended up with rehashes at some point down the line -- tho they can still be pleasant

smoke rings is still his best album. his approach on that one was a bit more motorik, not as much of the rambling Neil Young-isms that define his most recent work, a lot of tight finger-picking in interesting tunings. baby's arms and runner-ups are my favorite tracks of his.

To me it sounds like he’s trying too hard on Smoke Ring. It sounds so busy all the time. Stuff since then has been more relaxed, dare I saw meditative

I liked the new one as I listened to it but now I don't feel super compelled to go back to it. Wouldn't turn it off if it came on, but don't think I'd actively seek it out either.
