this is basically like Drake rapping over the DJ Sprinkles album
― een, Monday, 7 November 2011 16:43 (fourteen years ago)
how are y'all hearing this record? it doesn't come out until nov. 15th?
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)
ysi?
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)
production on everything i've heard is great, i might actually buy a drake album
― this is unusual for batman. (Jordan), Monday, 7 November 2011 17:23 (fourteen years ago)
this makes me curious but I guess I'd better just sticking with the DJ Sprinkles record?
― "only girl in the kitchen" (boxedjoy), Monday, 7 November 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)
I'm feeling the weird hard crashy stabs vs. "empty" / beatless choruses of "Crew Love"
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 17:46 (fourteen years ago)
I feel like this thread should be retitled "Throw on Your Best Cardigan and Celebrate Fall 2011 with Drake"

that is rev's best zing in a long minute
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)
the second half of this album is amazing -- the "look what you've done" beat almost reminds me of "it's whatever" (which knowing drake might be intentional) & "cameras" is kinda crazy good, that chorus has some new jack swing stuff going on or something
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)
i can't even
― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Monday, 7 November 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago)
smh @ you
album has some nice beats no doubt
― Number None, Monday, 7 November 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)
sorry bruh, i mean the very least you could say about drake is that he has good taste! he did a remix/cover of "friendly skies" on his mixtape! amd that good taste really manifests itself on this album.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)
i mean that would be just about the faintest praise, but it's also true
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)
tons of reprehensible artists have good taste. alex (mtl) keeps talking about how that disgusting los campesinos dude likes cool r&b. i'm sure he does! he should still never open his mouth or go near a recording studio.
also, drake likes the weeknd, so not THAT good taste
― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Monday, 7 November 2011 19:37 (fourteen years ago)
also funny how when "run the world (girls)" dropped everyone shrieked OMG BEYONCÉ'S RIPPED OFF MAJOR LAZER but no one is doing the same thing for "take care" on this album which doesn't even have the good grace to do it to a particularly great beat
― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Monday, 7 November 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)
is it ripping off when Jamie XX was involved?
― Number None, Monday, 7 November 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)
well it's the exact same situation - was it ripping off when diplo was involved in "run the world"?
― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Monday, 7 November 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)
right but my point is that his good taste has manifested itself positively in his music -- it's not merely just the idea of listening to good music. btw you could say the same thing about gareth campesinos if you were super into indie and wanted to talk about how xiu xiu or whatever has influenced their music.
well for one, as number none points out, jamie xx was involved. secondly "pon de floor" is a pretty massive, well known track that had made a name for itself prior to beyonce using it, so i think it was a much worse idea & more difficult thing for her to pull off. also "run the world" just doesn't work as a song and makes no sense in the context of 4, where as the opposite is true for "take care"
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
i'll give you a point on the weeknd comment tho
I don't know who the people crying rip off in the case of Beyonce were anyway. It's not like we know the process, whether Diplo/Jamie offered up the beats themselves or were asked if they could use them. Regardless, i'm pretty sure you could find some enraged "We're New Here" fans right now if you tried

i'm resting in the uncomfortable position where i still find Drake to be a really douchey person who happens to have a sense for aesthetics & has made probably the best record he will make
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)
you gotta give it up for the line about how michael jordan is still wearing his hoop earring, though
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)
i'm pretty comfortable with that
xp
― this is unusual for batman. (Jordan), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)
This is better than WTT

― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)
is it better than tha carter iv
(i still haven't bothered to listen to that. one day.)
― all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)
woof the weeknd still bothers me on this. he sounds corny
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)
every time he drops an http://kkkorner.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/nbomb5.jpg?w=350&h=259 its jarring, not at white-people-dropping-it level, but more like he-doesnt-sound-like-hes-used-to-saying-it level
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:44 (fourteen years ago)
haha who did that autoreplace??
i mess w/ 'underground kings' that song bangs in the right way
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)
this is unquestionably a much better record than TML. sorta makes that look like crap in comparison
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:47 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it does sound awkward all right. Also i thought he was white for quite a while
― Number None, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 19:17 (2 hours ago)
was kinda being sarcastic there, but it's true that I can't find any mediafire, megaupload or other spots for this leak- like everything keeps getting shut down I guess? for a major album that has leaked it's proving oddly hard for me to find (insert *u old* disses here)
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:48 (fourteen years ago)
this is like rap record dinner party music tho
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:50 (fourteen years ago)
xxps
maybe that dinner party vibe is partially about the canadian-ness- i.e. "toronto the good", it's hardly sin city up there
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:52 (fourteen years ago)

its jarring, not at white-people-dropping-it level, but more like he-doesnt-sound-like-hes-used-to-saying-it level
it is definitely jarring, but is that just down to the fact that it's being sung (and sometimes held out at the end of a line)?
― this is unusual for batman. (Jordan), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)
i dunno other R&B singers have been dropping it for awhile. maybe they just made it seem more conversational while he's plumbing it for significance or something
― AFAP Raggett (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:24 (fourteen years ago)
lovin this so far I have to say, ouch at the acapella bit at the end of "headlines" but otherwise yeah
esp. dig the synth in "Buried Alive"
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)
okay the beat for "We'll Be Fine" sounds like it was made out of the same pattern/file as the beat on "She Will"- the bassline is diff. but the skeleton of the rhythm itself sounds way similar
― the tune is space, Monday, 7 November 2011 22:32 (fourteen years ago)
kinda think this is up there w/ LVM & LTTP as the best produced rap or r&b albums of the past few years. the fact that it's a drake album means i won't ever love it as much as those (obv) but from a pure "holy shit all this just sounds AWESOME" perspective, it's up there
― J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2011 22:47 (fourteen years ago)
the debate i'm kinda interested in is how many people will think this is better than 'late registration'
not better than late registration (which is still maybe my secret favourite Kanye albums, notwithstanding the bloat) but this is really quite nice and way better than anything i expected from fuckin' drake.
― Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)
yeah it's not better than LR i agree, but you could draw a lot of similarities there so i'm wondering how this is going to be received vis a vis LR
