it is certainly possible that the email came from an overzealous fan of Odd Future, and not from the group itself
that does seem possible

you'd think soulja boy's sputtering grasps for relevancy, or bow wow's nonexistence, or the fact that all of the dominant rappers right now are, at the youngest, in their late 20s, might mean something, yet i feel like writers just chase new artists, and forget them when they actually develop.

tie in with 'firsties' but its really started to infect hip hop now

i feel like rap writers are really overly obsessed with hype and popularity atm, or maybe just SEO
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Friday, 27 January 2012 00:50 (fourteen years ago)
obsession with youthful performers has dominated popular music since, what, the 50s at least...?
― Full Frontal Newtity (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 27 January 2012 00:51 (fourteen years ago)
well, that's culture in general.
i would argue that lots of writers are confusing "New Artists" with "New Stories" which aren't actually the same thing

i'm not talking about the public's obsession with young pretty faces, i'm talking about critics' obsession w/ image over music. the most popular rappers out right now...Drake is on the young side, in his mid-20s. Ross has to be well into his 30s. Jay is what, 40? Kanye, 30s, T.I., probably around 30, Jeezy, probably around 30. Gucci, into his 30s.
etc

judging from all the year-end polls everybody has pulled back from their earlier enthusiasm about these corny little shits. but it's pretty hilarious how deej wants SO BAD to make a clusterfuck right now.
― some dude, Friday, 27 January 2012 00:56 (fourteen years ago)
i still think they put out a lot of good music... they haven't really released all that much since the big hype wave broke anyway. 'earl' is still an amazing album and the mellowhype record is still very good.
― J0rdan S., Friday, 27 January 2012 00:56 (fourteen years ago)
the tyler record was overly long and just not that great... it's not really uncommon for an artist to really gain popularity in the real world while falling out of favor critically
they're first 'major label release' is coming out in a few months and i guess we'll see if earl ever puts anything out
and "yonkers" was seen as one of the top rap songs of the year

actually i do kind of want to talk about hype cycles & etc. in general. there are a lot of young artists getting written up in various places now & I'm kind of wary of it all, feel like lots of people are trying to discover their own odd future's
― guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 00:59 (fourteen years ago)
tyler's album really allowed for a huge feedback loop critically even tho their careers are kind of progressing at a normal, if not a tad slow, pace
they're still touring all over the country/world and this new tour they're doing w/ a pop up shop in every city is pretty brilliant imo from a marketing and sales standpoint, i'm surprised more ppl aren't talking about that aspect of it
― J0rdan S., Friday, 27 January 2012 01:00 (fourteen years ago)
you sound like carles right now, just for the record xp
ok
― guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:02 (fourteen years ago)
i mean, i'm being serious & putting my voice up front when i say this stuff, i'm not hiding behind a mask of does he really mean it so i don't think that really describes me here at all
i'm not even sure it's hype cycles in this case
i def love the early mixtapes and lots of other stuff...but then the tyler album that was gonna be their "breakout"...just wasn't all that good
it all might have been different if earl had been around and was the first out the gate with a "proper" album
tyler just isn't that great of a rapper
but overall, they just seem like an underground group and i don't think the way they do things was gonna make them like a for real commercial force like drake or rick ross or w/e

i think part of this is just like, i don't really find 18 year olds to be all that interesting or capable of translating what makes them interesting into rap music very often. maybe this is about me getting older, but there's a reason i like when artists get a chance to grow & mature, and why I think Big K.R.I.T. is just starting to come into his own style, or why i like the cool kids & used to think they were bad, and why i'm drawn to a 29 year old rapper like boldy james over someone like tyler. its just an artistic sensibility that feels less juvenile
― guilt is a useless emoticon (D-40), Friday, 27 January 2012 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

as a dude who's a couple years older than you let me just say you can synthesize these two approaches i.e. it's incontestably the case that young dudes bring a degree of fire & newness that is the exclusive domain of youth & it's always exciting when it's on point, but as you mature you also learn to listen for other things, like depth of expression etc. but c'mon man 18 year olds do amazing shit all the time and it's awesome. however (and this an error lots of old dudes make) just because it's young & irritating that doesn't mean it's any good
