Ha.

Miss Piggy and Frodo in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 6 November 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

From Ben Greenman's (mostly) positive review in the New Yorker: "'Brandenberg Gate' opens the album with an acoustic guitar, not typical for a Metallica record."

Oh, really? I get the snide zing, but has he not heard "Master of Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning?"

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 6 November 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

No kidding. How many Beatles records start with an acoustic guitar?

pplains, Sunday, 6 November 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

How many records of any kind? Ever since Don Everly started doing it, people have never looked back.

This review is harsh:

Metal Machine Music was just a warm up to this misunderstood masterpiece.

thirdalternative, Monday, 7 November 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

Also we should talk about the rampant ageism in the negative reviews.

thirdalternative, Monday, 7 November 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

Also also, we should talk about how in 30 or 40 years this will probably be played in malls.

the way some reviewers are acting like lou reed is doing this to be popular is fucking ridiculous, lou does w/e the fuck he wants.

"ah yeah doing a 20 minute drone dirge called jr dad with metallica, kids will eat this up!"

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

David Keenan in this month's Wire:

Metallica's unrelenting sledgehammer style works as the perfect complement to Reed's vision of compassionless love, with monolithic chords deployed with almost surgical precision while he dissects relationships of masochism and power. Although the focus will inevitably be on the instrumental side of the album, it's Reed's remarkable vocal performance that is the true centre of gravity...

Tempted to call him out for trolling but maybe he just really likes it?

fun drive (seandalai), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

"remarkable vocal performance"

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

Worth bearing in mind that Keenan has actually played drums for Jandek. I don't think he's trolling.

that's not funny. (unperson), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Reed's vision of compassionless love

um passionateless

two year old daughter just came in to my office while I was playing "pumping blood".

her: "what is this"
me: "loutallica!"
her: "i do not like it"

worst day of my life tbh

scared for the post-Lulu generation

tylerw, Monday, 7 November 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

haha i was thinking of listening to it in front of my lil' one but i couldn't do it

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

also i noticed on "dragon", when lou says "you're vulva and everything on it" kinda sounds like he's ordering a chicago dog

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

lol! "your vulva -- on a poppy seed bun!"

yeah i don't think i'll just have this album playing around the house. my wife would kill me for one thing.

here's a question -- is the narrative of Lulu out of order? Like "Pumping Blood" depicts Lulu's death at the hands of Jack The Ripper, right? Should it be last? When the Lulu rock opera hits Broadway, will the songs be performed in a different order?

tylerw, Monday, 7 November 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

Just remembered - these dobbers are on Jools Holland tonight!

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

please let them do "junior dad," jools!

tylerw, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

I will watch, if only to savour Jools Holland's look of utter bemusement. Hope they join in the boogie woogie jam at the start!

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

wow actually sounding really good!

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:03 (fourteen years ago)

so "Iced Honey" was excellent, well done Loutallica, I take back my earlier snark.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:07 (fourteen years ago)

Oh shit, did I miss it already?

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

yep, think they're probably doing the closing number too. Currently a brass band raping Eurythmics, which in a way is a bit like Lulu, when you think about it.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)

Can't believe I was taking an old man nap while the 80-year old Lou Reed was blowing up the solar system on Jools.

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:23 (fourteen years ago)

A new planetary system was formed in your dreamscape, H.P. Lovecraft-style.

Miss Piggy and Frodo in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)

can't see an 18min track being allowed to eat into Newsnight, sadly. Second time Jools has called Loutallica "unique".

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)

HOLY BALLS, WTF IS THIS???

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

some old bullshit

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:29 (fourteen years ago)

writing letters of complaint to Lu, Lars, the Beeb, the PM, the Pope etc.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH WHITE LIGHT!

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:31 (fourteen years ago)

srsly?

Miss Piggy and Frodo in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

White Light/White Heat hung, drawn and quartered Loutallica style.

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

yeah they did that one at the r&r hall of fame thing that started this whole crizazy ride.

Wow, that might be worse than "Sweet Jane"

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

That youtube is about possibly only one-fiftieth as mental as what this nation just witnessed tbh.

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

In that sentence, I want to destroy "possibly"

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

can someone get this on youtube asap thx

tylerw, Tuesday, 8 November 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)
