Where is the song called "Lulu Says" on this album? A hidden bonus track? Or is that "Liesl Says"?

band of uitsmijters (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

@Bateau. There are definitely songs where the music and vocals are far apart, like Mistress Dread (although the vocals are obviously not off on Mistress Dread by accident). As pplains says it's still odd since it's all recorded live. I listened to Iced Honey a couple of times today (because of the Aronofsky-news) and that one really works for me :-)

I think Reeds vocals fit well with the rhythm on The View, and I still don't think the music is so different from what I'm used to with Reed-records - it's a bit harder and faster at times (not better or stronger I guess).

I never really listened to Metallica, so maybe that's why I'm not too annoyed with how they play as long as they don't "disturb" Lou (and of course I wouldn't have been without THE TABLE for the world). I like the riffs as well on Frustration, Brandenburg, View, Iced Honey.

niels, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

thing is, besides junior dad (which is just the best thing on here) i think "mistress dread" is the best song precisely because of the bizarre juxtaposition of crazy bay area thrash, modern classical drone shit, and lou sounding like he's risen from the grave to curse our penises

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, "Mistress Dread" is a standout for me too.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

really like pumping blood too

tbh i kinda wish this album was more metal really! and more weird drone, but there's a enough of both to make it really bizarre and cool imo

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

was listening to "frustration" just now and man i think all of the riffs in that song are really cool

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

I read all this discussion thinking about our various efforts and often agree with the assessments!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

So crut was fusing thrash and drone in his own way, no penis-cursing though.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

^^ don't speak to soon, Ned

This album isn't nearly as bad as the reviews led me to believe. Kind of like it.

omar little, Friday, 4 November 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

btw i'm listening to The Raven for the first time

jesus, this makes LULU sound like Transformer

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 November 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

haw. i kind of like the raven. i'm not sure why.

tylerw, Friday, 4 November 2011 19:59 (fourteen years ago)

the part where steve buscemi and willem defoe are bitching at each other? classic.

tylerw, Friday, 4 November 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like the ultimate way to get on cranky lou reed's good side is to tell him how much you lovvvvvvved The Raven.

tylerw, Friday, 4 November 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

I like The Raven. Unlike Loutallica, it's a big mess that kind of works.

A. Begrand, Friday, 4 November 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

i saw lou reed live on my 23rd birthday when he was touring in support of The Raven. i was working at a place adjacent to the venue and security just let me walk in the back

Antony Hagerty and the tai chi instructor were part of the show but i remember being dismayed that the leg-slapper guy was not.

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 4 November 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

for me, the first three metallica albums are sacred cows and always will be. nothing is going to change that, though i'll gladly admit that they've been parodying themselves for the last 15 years. nothing about their evolution is surprising on my part --with money and fame having kicked in, along with the inevitable side-effects of ageing and "mellowing out", there's really no reason to expect metallica to have the drive, energy and fundamental togetherness to assemble something worth paying serious attention to these days in the realm of metal. so i kind of objectively expected lulu to be awful in advance. and it is pretty ordinary, but nowhere near as bad as i anticipated. for starters, it IS ambitious. and the sheer audacity of the whole project lends some residual charm to even the most glaring missteps contained within.

i realise i haven't even brought up lou reed in my appraisal of lulu. my relationship with lou is a bit more complex, see. he's done whatever the fuck he wants from day one. the fact that he's still operating along these lines (and apparently even less inclined to give two fucks about critical reception given the fact that he's kind of off the "cool" radar and well and truly on his own wavelength) actually makes me doubly inclined to really zone in on what he's trying to express on this album.

4 out of 5 stars on this months Uncut

When was the last time a major 60s artist got less than 4 stars for a new album in Uncut

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 5 November 2011 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

Lou and Metallica on next week's Jools too.

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 5 November 2011 04:21 (fourteen years ago)

btw this album rules.

⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, 5 November 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

Some of Reed's vocal inflections (such as they are) make me think he pulled out a copy of Jim Carroll's "Pools of Mercury" after he died.

thirdalternative, Saturday, 5 November 2011 17:00 (fourteen years ago)

This sounds like a really pro version of Reynols.

Miss Piggy and Frodo in Hull (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 6 November 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)

From Ben Greenman's (mostly) positive review in the New Yorker: "'Brandenberg Gate' opens the album with an acoustic guitar, not typical for a Metallica record."

Oh, really? I get the snide zing, but has he not heard "Master of Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning?"

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 6 November 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

No kidding. How many Beatles records start with an acoustic guitar?

pplains, Sunday, 6 November 2011 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

How many records of any kind? Ever since Don Everly started doing it, people have never looked back.

Metal Machine Music was just a warm up to this misunderstood masterpiece.

Also we should talk about the rampant ageism in the negative reviews.

thirdalternative, Monday, 7 November 2011 19:31 (fourteen years ago)

Also also, we should talk about how in 30 or 40 years this will probably be played in malls.

the way some reviewers are acting like lou reed is doing this to be popular is fucking ridiculous, lou does w/e the fuck he wants.

"ah yeah doing a 20 minute drone dirge called jr dad with metallica, kids will eat this up!"

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

David Keenan in this month's Wire:

Metallica's unrelenting sledgehammer style works as the perfect complement to Reed's vision of compassionless love, with monolithic chords deployed with almost surgical precision while he dissects relationships of masochism and power. Although the focus will inevitably be on the instrumental side of the album, it's Reed's remarkable vocal performance that is the true centre of gravity...

Tempted to call him out for trolling but maybe he just really likes it?

fun drive (seandalai), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:39 (fourteen years ago)

"remarkable vocal performance"

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)

Worth bearing in mind that Keenan has actually played drums for Jandek. I don't think he's trolling.

that's not funny. (unperson), Monday, 7 November 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

Reed's vision of compassionless love

um passionateless

two year old daughter just came in to my office while I was playing "pumping blood".

her: "what is this"
me: "loutallica!"
her: "i do not like it"

worst day of my life tbh

tylerw, Monday, 7 November 2011 22:14 (fourteen years ago)

haha i was thinking of listening to it in front of my lil' one but i couldn't do it

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:37 (fourteen years ago)

also i noticed on "dragon", when lou says "you're vulva and everything on it" kinda sounds like he's ordering a chicago dog

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2011 22:38 (fourteen years ago)

lol! "your vulva -- on a poppy seed bun!"

yeah i don't think i'll just have this album playing around the house. my wife would kill me for one thing.

here's a question -- is the narrative of Lulu out of order? Like "Pumping Blood" depicts Lulu's death at the hands of Jack The Ripper, right? Should it be last? When the Lulu rock opera hits Broadway, will the songs be performed in a different order?

tylerw, Monday, 7 November 2011 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

Just remembered - these dobbers are on Jools Holland tonight!

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Tuesday, 8 November 2011 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

please let them do "junior dad," jools!

I will watch, if only to savour Jools Holland's look of utter bemusement. Hope they join in the boogie woogie jam at the start!
