I really do wonder if, when Lou's pulling sounds out of the amorphous mass of free jazz, doo-wop and trebly guitar in his mind, if he hears a crotchety old man pitching all over the place.

This is the same wondering I do whenever I hear Peter Bogdanovich go on and on about Hawks and Hitchcock and then watch his own latest directorial offering.

IT'S ON NOW:

Darren Aronofsky will direct a music video from the new Metallica and Lou Reed album, "Lulu."

The Oscar-nominated director of "Black Swan" and "The Wrestler" will produce a video for the track, "Iced Honey." Aronofsky brings his cameraman, Matthew Libatique, to the project as director of photography. The clip will be shot in the San Francisco Bay area and will be available for viewing later this month.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said Thursday that working with Reed and Aronofsky is "living the dream."

And the avant-garde Reed said he hopes the video can be "his Black Swan."

Quick, we need to do the video to either of our "Iced Honey" tracks first.

I don't believe in Nico
I don't believe in Delmore
I don't believe in Andy

I just believe in Lou
Lulu and Lou
And that's a wonderful two

I was the Rock and Roll Animal
But now I'm something new
I was the Coney Island Baby
But now I'm just Lou

And so, my metal blood brothers
We'll just have to carry on

Finally heard the whole thing and yeah, I like parts of this. It gets much better as it goes along, I think lopping off the first two tracks would have helped immensely.

After the wild anticipation ride of "omg this is gonna be AWESOME / lol wait no this is gonna be horrible / but WAIT! COULD BE AWESOME! / no, probably shite / ILX Lulu is teh best ever / Hmm, is this gonna be grebt?" I have to conclude that this album is in fact a shiny bonkers piece of shite. It just does not work and the "music" is terrible.

The ILX version beats it by miles and miles. I wish Lou was on ILX and had participated in our pre-cover project. But even without him, it is wayyy better than the actual Lulu.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 4 November 2011 00:46 (fourteen years ago)

this isn't all that good but it's not the sonic abortion people really want it to be. i liked some parts of it, though i doubt i'd want to listen to it again.

latebloomer, Friday, 4 November 2011 05:48 (fourteen years ago)

Bateau trolling? whole "piece of shite" thing is funny, sure, but it doesn't make sense to dismiss tracks like brandenburg gate, the view, iced honey, junior dad. like blue mask much? if no maybe just not fan of later reed ye.

niels, Friday, 4 November 2011 13:26 (fourteen years ago)

Except I think "Brandenburg Gate" and "The View" are the two worst tracks on here.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 13:28 (fourteen years ago)

@Niels, I was coming on a bit strong but I do think, as an album, a project, it's just really, really bad. Sure, I think 'Junior Dad' is quite all right, but I realised it's because it's the least Metallica/Lou Reed thing on here, if that makes sense. This album just does not work for me. At all.

I do like most of Reed's solo work, I'd stan for more of his later work than others probably, but Loutallica is just a horrible combination for me. At leats how they did it this time around. They're on separate tracks, it's like Lou's contribution is tacked onto some dire Metallica outtakes.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 4 November 2011 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

It is strange how disconnected the music and vocals are from each other, what with them boasting of recording all tracks live in the same room. You can even hear Lou's vocals get louder, like he's trying to yell over the music in his headphones and still, it comes across like an hour-long porno version of "The Gift".

And seriously, if you told me a year ago that Lou Reed and Metallica would make an entire record of Hüsker Dü's "How To Skin a Cat", I would have been thrilled.

pplains, Friday, 4 November 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

some dire Metallica outtakes

But do or did you ever like Metallica? My disappointment with Lulu is mostly that Metallica seemed so happy with the opportunity to do something else but they still ended up sounding as the thrash metal band they are. In and by itself the tunes they came up with are really not that bad; they're just nothing special.

Not particularly. I own and like the first three albums (nostalgia), but I'd live on just fine not hearing them ever again. It's what I said earlier, and what PP points out too, the music and vocals are so far apart, it sounds so disconnected. And indeed, I had hoped this collaboration would see Metallica do something different, or at least bring forth music that sounds like the sum of two parts. Now it's just two separate parts.

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 4 November 2011 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

Where is the song called "Lulu Says" on this album? A hidden bonus track? Or is that "Liesl Says"?

band of uitsmijters (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

@Bateau. There are definitely songs where the music and vocals are far apart, like Mistress Dread (although the vocals are obviously not off on Mistress Dread by accident). As pplains says it's still odd since it's all recorded live. I listened to Iced Honey a couple of times today (because of the Aronofsky-news) and that one really works for me :-)

I think Reeds vocals fit well with the rhythm on The View, and I still don't think the music is so different from what I'm used to with Reed-records - it's a bit harder and faster at times (not better or stronger I guess).

I never really listened to Metallica, so maybe that's why I'm not too annoyed with how they play as long as they don't "disturb" Lou (and of course I wouldn't have been without THE TABLE for the world). I like the riffs as well on Frustration, Brandenburg, View, Iced Honey.

niels, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:23 (fourteen years ago)

thing is, besides junior dad (which is just the best thing on here) i think "mistress dread" is the best song precisely because of the bizarre juxtaposition of crazy bay area thrash, modern classical drone shit, and lou sounding like he's risen from the grave to curse our penises

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:37 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, "Mistress Dread" is a standout for me too.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

really like pumping blood too

tbh i kinda wish this album was more metal really! and more weird drone, but there's a enough of both to make it really bizarre and cool imo

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:42 (fourteen years ago)

was listening to "frustration" just now and man i think all of the riffs in that song are really cool

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:45 (fourteen years ago)

I read all this discussion thinking about our various efforts and often agree with the assessments!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:46 (fourteen years ago)

So crut was fusing thrash and drone in his own way, no penis-cursing though.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

^^ don't speak to soon, Ned

Y Kant Lou Reed (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

This album isn't nearly as bad as the reviews led me to believe. Kind of like it.
