Attention mash-up masters, please place Lou Reed's "Lulu" ramblings on top of "Aqualung," thanks!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 22:51 (fourteen years ago)

flulute solo!

I would love MeTullica.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

would love the idea of MeTullica winning a grammy.

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

some people were discussing this on a panel show last night. one guy said "lou reed swings. metallica dont."

Michael B Higgins (Michael B), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

just listened at a friend's house on a good stereo

i really like most of CD 1...dragon is definitely the worst song

but yeah parts of this are really fucking striking and bizarre music

the end of junior dad is no shit some of the best music released this year IMO...

Unfortunately I wasn't near a real record store today, so I swung by a chain store to pick up this and Megadeth. Was also hoping to get Smile, but fucking B3st Buy isn't even stocking it in-store.

I AM THE ROOT.

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 08:21 (fourteen years ago)

The p4k reviewer doesnt seem acquainted with what Lou Reed is supposed to sound like when at his best post Transformer (Coney Island, Blue Mask, New York, Magic and Loss, Ecstacy) his only reference is Street Hassle (which is an amazing song but imo not a good album and appeared on PF500 as well) so i'm not sure he really likes lou reed solo and it's not surprising that he wouldn't like lulu. It sounds exactly like Lou Reed playing with Metallica and the 1.0 is just ridiculous.

niels, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 10:12 (fourteen years ago)

Popmatters gave it a 1 too...

Drowned in Sound made the review a homage to Lester Bangs review of Metal Machine Music, which probably means they don't completely hate the record..?

Mule, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 10:31 (fourteen years ago)

Seems like a lot of reviewers are missing the point. This is an unqualified great record, definitely emblematic of Music in the Year 2011.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

oh, Rihanna is featured on a song?

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

Of note!:

Lou Reed and Metallica have just released this year’s frontrunner for strangest musical collaboration: Lulu, a 10-song album inspired by the work of German Expressionist playwright Frank Wedekind. We get reactions from Maura Johnston of the Village Voice and Phil Freeman, music writer and editor of RoadRunnerRecords.com. Plus, Maura and Phil help us explore unusual musical partnerships – and they offer their picks of the good and not so good.

(Sneak in a mention of the ILX precovers and happiness will be eternal.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

This will be at 2 pm Eastern Time, FWIW.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

i think niels is right about most people not really being acquainted with lou's solo career. the 70s, sure, maybe touchstones like new york or drella later, but otherwise, lou's output for the past 25 years or so isn't much listened to. feel like in order to deal with lulu, you should be at least aware of his (admittedly pretty flawed) later period stuff. lulu didn't come out of nowhere -- he was doing this kind of really unpleasant, twisted/sexual lyrical thing all the way back to "like a possum" and "rock minuet". not that he didn't deal with that type of thing before, but it seems to me those songs are the beginning of what he's doing now...

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

I think also he's upped the performance art quotient significantly over time, and Lulu should be understood as fitting into that vein of work.

Looking forward to Hetfield's tai chi demonstrations when they play live...

Rob Trujillo squat-stomping around with an electric viola

Lars removes his cymbals, plays standing up

da croupier, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

kirk is already sterling-like in his quiet guitar majesty, obvs. Hetfield's Nico/Gerald Malanga.

da croupier, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

Nico would be a fine voice for Lulu.

Guessing that when Reed wrote the lyrics for Robert Wilson, he meant for a gal to sing them.

your way better (Eazy), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:05 (fourteen years ago)

I used to live a couple blocks from Malanga. He was heavy and walking with a cane. No more whip dancing for him. Time's a bitch.

thirdalternative, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:06 (fourteen years ago)

is that Letterman performance where Lou's only percussionist was a dude wearing leather pants and slapping his thighs on YouTube?

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

really like the allmusic review, seems like the first one that really tries to honestly engage w/lulu (at the same time not ignoring it's flaws)

this is probably the closest to my feelings on the record (though i kinda find hetfield loveable)

ecstasy is a pretty cool album tbh

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:21 (fourteen years ago)

xp good review. Interesting suggestions for future collabs too: Sunn0)))! Jesus Lizard! Shellac!

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

That Phil/Maura talk is happening now BTW.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:27 (fourteen years ago)

It was strange listening to actual thing last night after all the speculating and pre-tributing. Allmusic review ia def closest to my feelings about right now, though I think I like more? I don't know, man it is some weird thing.

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:56 (fourteen years ago)

I'd like to hear The Hold Steady cover "Brandenburg Gate."

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really like Lou Reed or his voice in particular, but this guy from Roadrunner Records saying that "Lou Reed never had a good voice" is just unreal.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

Reed's singing was great until the '80s.

thirdalternative, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

OTOH this Phil guy is claiming that the Judgment Night soundtrack holds up, which I respect.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

"This Phil guy" is noted ILM poster and metal man unperson.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Ah I see his comments upthread regarding never getting Lou or the Velvets.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

literally 10 minutes before tylerw's post I was in a starbucks and saw I guy I thought was Lou Reed.

yesterday was LULU day, but I didn't know November was going to be LULU month!

highlight:
He just came back with another scone (blueberry?). Sitting back down. He looked at me and shook his head derisively. #LouAtStarbucks

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

Mustaine indeed wins for once, Megadeth's new album is going to sell nearly four times that of Lulu.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but every person that bought lulu is going to form a band

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

m@tt the correct term is "mob"

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

yeah but every person that bought lulu is going to form a band cover it

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

every person that bought lulu is going to heaven

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

You know, as horrible as most people think this album is, Louloutallica have managed to create a fucking event album that is getting talked about.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

Sort of. (People in 'real life' I have heard talking about this album outside of ILXors = zero, zip, nada.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

awesome comment on facebook about a hammett interview:
This puts all the haters to shame stating cliff would roll in his grave.... as kirk states that he found velvet revolver through cliff...tisk tisk
