yeah these guys are just dicks
― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:12 (fourteen years ago)
Like I can't even justify the hard drive space for downloading the free shit from tumblr any more. The story will make a greak book someday, a how to completely piss away huge amounts of hype in barely a year.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i don't think that's gonna happen, sorry bub
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)
You really don't think someone's going to turn this into a book or something someday? Gotta disagree with you on that one.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:17 (fourteen years ago)
oh well someone will surely write a book about them. i really don't think they're going to piss away their hype in less than a year tho.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 19:18 (fourteen years ago)
Oh gotcha. Yeah, they won't completely, no, but it just seems like less an less people give a shit at this point. I know it didn't really backfire on Chris Brown, but since these guys aren't selling millions yet, the higher profile types might start distancing themselves from these guys when stories like this break.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)
lol
― Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:21 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, i don't think any of that is true
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 19:22 (fourteen years ago)
for one, high profile people will co sign and/or work with anyone that will make them money/keep them famous
also OF have been playing sold out shows like for the entire year, ppl still very much care about them
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)
given the way ppl reacted to Chris Brown, I expect that if this has any effect at all, it will be to accelerate their reinvention as a mainstream group
― he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:23 (fourteen years ago)
I know it didn't really backfire on Chris Brown and Ike Turner and Tommy Lee and Rick Allen and James Brown and Ben Weasel and Rick James and Jackson Browne and Gucci Mane and....
― Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:24 (fourteen years ago)
what a fuckin asshole
will everybody here who covers music plz stop giving them ink now? thanks
― pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)
you have to freefall out of the spotlight first and then it'll wreck your career completely.
― omar little, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)
Guys difference between those people you are talking about is that these guys aren't selling even 1/10th of the numbers those guys did. Come on. I realize its wishful thinking that this will even put a temporary speedbump in their career, but if you think they'll get as much public, high level backing as Chris Brown did - you're insane.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)
More importantly I think we can all agree these guys are assholes at this point.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:36 (fourteen years ago)
Being huge assholes is basically Odd Future's brand. Pissing off some crit types and gay/women's rights groups is not going to hurt them.
― polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)
also out of the lil list you made of people who've hit women these dudes easily make the worst music
― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)
Wait I didn't see Ben Weasel on Whiney's list, I guess maybe OF might in total sell 1/10th of his stuff. But also, he got tons of shit for the stunt he pulled and its not like I've seen tons of restorative press going on for him either.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)
Whiney forgot Dr. Dre

― unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:44 (fourteen years ago)
But you're right guys, since other musicians have gotten away with hitting women before we should all just collectively throw our hands up in the air and shrug our shoulders.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)
what do you want me to do exactly?
― unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)
kill them all
― omar little, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)
On March 23, 2011 the other four members of Screeching Weasel all resigned from the band citing the SXSW incident as the reason.[11] On March 31 it was announced that the entire Weaselfest had been cancelled.[12] In August, Weasel issued a full article on Screeching Weasel's website describing his whole point of view on the situation.[13]
yeah this sure seems "consequence-free" to me
― he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)
I was making a larger point that maybe people stop giving them the time of day, stop hyping them, etc etc etc. Not necc aiming that a people here, but the attitude of "oh this happens all time, won't faze them a bit" make me frustrated and wish that people in general would be a little more vocally opposed to this. The shrugging of shoulders itt is symptomatic of people just not giving enough of a shit.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:48 (fourteen years ago)
they canceled weaselfest

Pissing off some crit types and gay/women's rights groups is not going to hurt them.
this is the bigger shame - that an entertainer attacks a woman and the risk he's taking there is "pissing off some crit types and gay/women's groups" instead of "alienating all decent people." Shakey, the thing to do with artists whose shitty behavior will be encouraged by your attention is to stop giving them attention. That does actually mean denying yrself the pleasure of their art, yes. I know that from some angles that's an unacceptable sacrifice always, I disagree w/that take but I get it. the end

― fauxmarc, Monday, 31 October 2011 19:52 (fourteen years ago)
It's easier to dismiss fucktards who already made fourth-rate art like Chris Brown.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:53 (fourteen years ago)
I'm not a journalist/blogger/whatever so I'm not "giving them attention". I downloaded some shit for free a few times and have listened to it occasionally. I haven't given them any money or "hyped" them unless you count posting on this thread as hype.
fwiw I don't agree that you shouldn't engage with art that's made by people whose behavior you object to, but we've been over this argument and my opinion is unchanged.
― unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:55 (fourteen years ago)
No one suggested this either...? We're just posting...options.
― lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 31 October 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)
yea Alfred I do suggest that. I suggest that if you know that an artist is the kind of guy who hits women, actively, in the present, you should just quit listening to his shit, because there's benefit in it to said asshole if you do listen, and there's enough good shit around that you're not really going to be starving yourself of culture if you say "actual active we-hit-women misogynists get the perma-gasface shut-out"

I agree with you re: this particular incident. But it also would be a lot worse for them if Tyler was the one who slapped her instead of Left Brain.
― polyphonic, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:04 (fourteen years ago)
i'm kinda confused as to how this incident started. They didn't want photographers in the pit because the pit is unfair to the crowd? What?
― google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)
i mean, having just spent my entire summer in a photo pit i have some strong opinions here but the artist should only give a shit about what's going on in the pit if it directly affects their show
― google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:07 (fourteen years ago)
can't find the thread argh

Any photo pit that isn't cleared out after the first three songs can fuck right off
― Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)
In his explanation he says that the barricaded area where the photographers work is not fair to the fans. Other members of the group backed up his words.
― google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)
any fan who waited three hours to hang out in the front row wants to look at the fat bobbling hotdog neck of a Paste Magazine photographer leaping in front of them every four seconds, doy
― Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)
I'm reminded of the perennial "don't meet your heroes" story, where somebody tried to meet S.M. in a bar and he was a jerk, and then same person never listens to The Magnetic Fields again. This is a given, everybody has that story. So tell me, why is one so willing to dismiss an artist's work based on their own personal experience with said artist, but less willing to dismiss an artist's work when their shitty behaviour happens to somebody else? Even if it is a photographer who stayed on past the third song

i don't mean "understand" as in "agree with" i mean "understand" like comprehend their opinion
― J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 20:14 (fourteen years ago)
Spin photographers will all be stunningly slim, in contrast.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)
i guess i don't even comprehend their opinion? like why are you so special that you don't get to have someone in front of you? welcome to seeing live music. and why should the artist give two fucks about this exactly? it's one thing if you've got a dumbshit photog actively blocking a group of people by standing on a box or something but these guys are doing the jobs that they've been asked to do, most likely by the band's/label's publicist! Don't hassle _them_!
