Fifty-Three Percenter Godbody Knowledge (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

i'm sad that i napped thru this whole discussion

ross' softbatch singles are generally pretty worthless -- deej's repping for "super high" is bizarre unless you're counting the remix which is actually a minor classic, "speedin" and "magnificent" are just total nonentities... altho "here i am" is one of his best singles. idk, i think shipley is def underrating him... if anything last year showcased that billboard numbers aren't matching up w/ how the 'community' feels it's that BMF wasn't even big on the charts but is going to be one of the landmark rap singles of this decade. i think the thing w/ ross is that very rarely does he put out an awful single... everyone prob fucks w/ a good number of his singles, the other ones are bland enough that no one really remembers them.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

i think the charts reflected "BMF"'s popularity pretty well, it was his 2nd biggest single on the R&B chart to date, didn't do much on the pop charts but obviously it was never going to be a "black and yellow" type crossover hit

ross doesn't have many outright awful songs true but that's one of benefits of having zero creativity or inkling to take any kind of risk or surprise anyone ever

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

the best thing he ever did was being able to transition the persona of "rick ross" into the music of rick ross. his music initially was kind of thrown at the wall initially but it was all sorta held together by his image, but around 'deeper than rap' when he locked into that lush, expensive, luxurious, orchestral kinda sound i think the tone and direction of his career changed and he was taken more seriously by critics, fans and peers. and even now he can do street stuff like BMF (or "mafia music" or "i'm a star") that just sound HUGE and feel like an outgrowth of the expansive justice league stuff

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

like, i like "i'm a boss" and "here i am" a lot but if ross made those songs now you'd just be like... these are so minor, not even in terms of quality but just how they try and approach the listener

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

er, no "i'm a boss" but w/e the one w/ t-pain is. "the boss"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

also how dare anyone question "Maybach Music 2"

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

i question the way t-pain pronounces "myooozeeek" and the infuriatingly smug way lil wayne says "well alright" at the beginning of his verse

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

wtf is 'bizarre' about repping for the original 'super high' ?? thats a dope song

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:20 (fourteen years ago)

it's definitely not

the production is good (shocker) but those overly heavy r&b ross songs are just kinda really mushy to me

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:25 (fourteen years ago)

i think "purple rain over central park chillin with my goons" is the moment i decided rick ross was a good rapper

Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:26 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, j0rdan, i just totally disagree. expensive production, R&B superstar choruses, that stuff is part & parcel of the ross aesthetic. i mean aston martin music relies incredibly heavily on it & thats one of his best

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:27 (fourteen years ago)

"super high" as a concept & production was put to 1 million x better use on the remix

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know, "super high" and "magnificent" just feel really canned and uninspired to me

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 October 2011 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

bougie r&b club ross is good ross imo

The Reverend, Sunday, 30 October 2011 12:37 (fourteen years ago)

all the ross songs i really like (blow, mafia music, i'm not a star) are all the straight up rap bangers, i never really understood why someone who got his first hit with a song like 'hustlin' would kind of voluntarily make cheeseball r&b his niche

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 12:43 (fourteen years ago)

aye

dayo, Sunday, 30 October 2011 12:53 (fourteen years ago)

maybe idgi, but every time i hear OJ Da Juiceman rap i keep thinkin he must not have any teeth

Neanderthal, Sunday, 30 October 2011 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

it's the way he only pronounces the first consonant of every word he says

mylo & xylotis (some dude), Sunday, 30 October 2011 13:13 (fourteen years ago)

i bought The Otha Side of the Trap a while ago for whatever reason and it was like his lyrics came from a pre-filled Excel template...tho there were a few tracks on there that I like mostly cuz of the production (obv including "Make the Trap Say Aye").

Neanderthal, Sunday, 30 October 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

i never liked 'make the trap aye' all that much -- and his lyrics were never particularly amazing, his flow was a unique one. i liked the way it would work on tracks like 'batman'

my favorite part of this whole thing is how they try & hide his identity as if everyone was gonna be scratching their heads & running to the comments section to try & find out which xxl freshman dropped this hot new freestyle

honest to god if you posted an actual opinion about music that wasnt actually an opinion on your house of mirrors conceptions of popular culture & who likes what & when i would love to fucking see it, just for a change of pace. your inability to conceive any kind of aesthetic worldview makes your contributions to music 'discussions' wholly worthless
