thanks to everyone posting.

Evan, I'm not understanding your question. Is what you have different from the torrent that's already active? In any case, I think that gmail frowns on that sort of use of their service.

patita (patita), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

An alternative to YouSendIt is http://www.megaupload.com/ - unlike YSI, they allow unlimited downloading of an uploaded file.

Yoz, Monday, 7 November 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

No, it's not different from the current torrent, except for being less complete. I was just wondering if it would be useful at all, since neither of the existing torrents are being currently seeded.

Evan, Monday, 7 November 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

Now I understand. It seems like we should work on getting the torrent seeded. I'll try with it again, didn't have any luck yesterday. What you have could be useful, however. Maybe megaupload or rapidshare for it?

patita (patita), Monday, 7 November 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

May I suggest we avoid Megaupload (mega slow!) & Rapidshare (very limiting).

YouSendIT have been working fine from the start and I see no reason to change it. I've used all the free file hosts and the two you just mentioned are used by lots of w*rez sites for cr*acked s*oftw*re and max-out entire IP range's which essentially means everyone on one or more particular ISP networks that can't download without a premium account. If anyone has missed something or has problems just ask and one of us (I'm happy to do it) who will upload again.

Regarding the torrent idea, I think having more than one would be spreading things too thinly - we need more on one not less on two. I understand your frustration but patience will be rewarded.

Regarding the gmail idea, it's something I have already given some thought - in fact I've created an account and am presently uploading everything. Sharing the account is inviting problems but a simple email to the JP account will get you the file you need. I'll announce the adderess when I have a good number online. In the meantime if you're desperate just ask for a re-upload. There's no rush, I think we all anticipate this will be a long run.

Finally a BIG THANK YOU to everyone for the last little flurry of uploads and to everyone for offering to help. Not only am I enjoying the music but the community spirit too.

:->

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Monday, 7 November 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize the trouble with the other upload sites, but that's good to know. I think your suggestions are good, DomesticEmpire--your gmail account sound ideal for getting a smaller number of files distributed after the initial ysi links expires. Reposting on ysi would work too.

I'd also like to thank everyone for their time and effort finding (even buying), uploading, and cataloging everything so far.

patita (patita), Monday, 7 November 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

It's too bad about Megaupload. It does seem a bit slow, but nevertheless, I've already uploaded a chunk of the files posted there. Might as well share it, for what it's worth - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EQ99Z699. It contains:

001A Al Casey - Surfin´ Hootenanny.mp3
001B Al Casey - Easy Pickin'.MP3
003B Alan Price Set - Iechyd-Da.mp3
004B Andy Capp - Reco - The Lion Speaks.mp3
005A Anemic Boyfriends - Guys Are Not Proud.mp3
006A Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand The Rain.mp3
006B Ann Peebles - I've Been There Before.mp3
007A Anti Social - Traffic Lights.mp3
009B Big Stick - Hell On Earth.mp3
012A Bobby Lee Trammell - If You Ever Get It Once.mp3
012B Bobby Lee Trammell - Don't You Know I Love You.mp3
015B Charlie Feathers - When You Decide.mp3
017A Charlie Feathers - Today and Tomorrow.mp3
024B Don Covay - Leave Him, Part 1.mp3
024B Don Covay - Leave Him, Part 2.mp3
025B Don French - Goldilocks.mp3
029A Eddie & Ernie - I Believe She Will.mp3
031A Eddie & Ernie - Time Waits For No-One.mp3
032 Electro Hippies - Mega-armageddon Death (Peel sessions)
036A GL Crockett - It's a Man Down There.mp3
039A Gene Dozier United Front - The Best Girl I Ever Had.mp3
040B Golanski Brothers - Toy.mp3
042B? The Greenhornes - Shadow Of Grief.mp3
043A Hooton 3 Car - Danny.mp3
045B Izzy Royal - Coronation Dub.mp3
049B Johnny Taylor - At Night Time.mp3
053A La Peste - Black.mp3
053B La Peste - Better Off Dead.mp3
054A Larry Bright - Mojo Workout.mp3
055B Laurie Anderson - Walk The Dog.mp3
057B Lightnin' Hopkins - Glory Be.mp3
059B Mary Monday & The Bitches - Pop Gun.mp3
060B The Upsetters - Revelation Dub.mp3
70B The Nice - Azrial (Angel of Death).mp3
071B Nilsson - Don't Leave Me.mp3
073B Nilsson - Gotta Get Up.mp3
075A Paul Blake & The Blood Fire Posse - Every Posse Get Flat.mp3

I standardized the filenames on these; hopefully it doesn't get confusing if there's different versions of the same file kicking around.

That's a good idea about sending people files via GMail. I've started to upload the stuff I have onto an account already, I'll post the address once I get the rest of those on there.

Evan, Monday, 7 November 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't wish to discourage anyone from helping out. The more access there is to the whole set, the less meat there is for the eb*y vultures to feed on.

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

i've beem seeding the 2nd torrent nonstop -- there was, as i said, some weirdness initially with connecting, but it resolved itself in time. i don't intend to stop seeding anytime in the near future, and would be happy to switch over to a new seed whenever anyone puts an updated set together.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 November 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Looks like we have the Bill Oddie A and B sides reversed, but I'm guessing Peel preferred the B side. Here it is on ebay:

patita what are you trying to do to me, I won't buy it, I won't buy it, I won't, you can't make me!?

Alright if it stays at a respectable 2 or 3 quid and I'm in a good mood....shame it's not on the dandelion label though, that would have made it a little more interesting.

Thanks patita, my little eb*y scout :->

something people using (downloading and seeding) torrents should maybe know:

Hong Kong man jailed for movie sharing
BitTorrent user gets three months in chokey

i already said upthread that ysi (maybe together with gmail or something controllable) would have been probably a better and safer option. on the other hand we probably wouldn't have got so many songs if there hadn't been the torrent. what do you think?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 7 November 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

FUD

Stan Meissner, Monday, 7 November 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Three months for distributing Miss Congeniality? I'd have given him six.

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Monday, 7 November 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

You'll get much longer than that for distributing Bill Oddie's Harry Krishna.

It's easy enough to download that real audio file--just put this into your browser instead:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~baytree/Money.ra

But I don't have the necessary stuff to convert to mp3. It's not the best quality file in the first place, but better than nothing until something better comes along. Does anyone have the technology to convert it?

The original real audio file was HEAVILY compressed therefore further compression added by converting it to mp3 makes this an 'it'll do for now' version. Still better than nothing. Thanks to arbo and patita for their fine detection work :)

Now how do I go about reseeding the torrents? I've got both versions of the torrent, and I'd like to reshare them, but I'm not sure how.

Evan, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, nevermind, got it working. Tomato Torrent misleadingly tells me it'll overwrite my completed folder, but it instead just starts seeding.

Evan, Tuesday, 8 November 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

I recommend µTorrent http://www.utorrent.com/
At under 100Kb, requiring no installation and free it's bloody marvellous.

Also in reply to an earlier query, http://www.cdfreaks.com/software/ is one of the best places to find all kinds of audio/cd/dvd tools and advice.

Seems we're still doing pretty well tracking these down. I wonder which few are to be our Waterloo? Of course we do know one chap who has them all...

DomesticEmpire (johnpeeleveryday.blogspot.com), Tuesday, 8 November 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

From the last list of missing tracks:
G L Crockett - Look out Mabel
Charlie Feathers - Deep elm blues / Nobody's darling
Charlie Feathers - When you come around / Too much alike
Mickey Lee Lane - Tutti Frutti

http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1V23S1PTOA7B71V199CW4PKANP

Is anyone keeping a list of missing b-sides? I may have some, but I don't have time to check what has already been posted.

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for your hard work in putting this whole thing together. I'm one those dastardly people who got here because of MetaFilter but I sincerely loved John Peel's radio work and the openness with which he approached new music. As a lover of all musical styles, I'm enjoying the varying genres of this project immensely. Although I don't have any tracks to offer that aren't already being shared, perhaps I can supply the occasional audio upgrade for tracks on the list. If anyone is interested, here's a 256kb version of "Aquarius" by Boards of Canada. (and if you like their stuff, I recommend the new album by Jan Jelinek...it's pretty amazing, subtle stuff in the 'IDM' vein.)

New wants list.

Notes:
1. I've added a couple of previously unlisted B-sides:
- White Stripes - The Gift of the Magi/Silent Night (Merry Christmas EP)

3. I can supply the Sheena Easton and Quads B-sides later.
4. The Ken Colyer tracks that we've got are only excerpts.
