I want a re-evaluation of "The Boss"

I remember a lot of hate/ambivalence toward this song when it came out. BUT (and I know you all value my opinion so much) it's one of the hottest rap tracks of the year, best T-Pain guest ft. on a single of 08 and one of THE BEST beats of the year! there i said it

it kinda falls into the cat. of what i was tlaking about on the other thread like "what am i supposed to do with this" ie: not exactly made for the club, nor crossover attempt. but still i'll JR Rotem over both the Runners and Cool & Dre cuz he killed that beat.

i've been thinking about that tbh, i mean i dont know who would be ghosting for him now that wasn't ever before... it's not like his numbers had fallen off or anything. maybe smitty? idk what his verses are like but he's a notorious miami ghostwriter

then again— and noz alluded to this in a post about soulja boy— rap culture in the internet era doesn't really allow for rappers to improve as writers. i mean "something def happened" with lil wayne around tha carter but if 19 year old wayne dropped tomorrow he'd have been clowned off the face of the planet and his career as we know it would never happen

so, yeah, maybe ross is getting better as a writer

so (ghostwriting aside) this will def. be his best album and everything that's come out sounds really great, but i've realized that this is probably gonna flop in comparison to Trilla. last time he had a pretty huge debut considering that "Speedin" and "The Boss" really weren't that big

"Magnisficent" is not really cutting it. unless "Maybach Music 2" becomes a big hit some time before the release date i don't see this being a success as far as sales go, which sucks cuz it seems like the best music this guy has ever made

he'll still break 200 or 300 gs imo which is pretty good at this point i think

he's never had that many big singles man - "speedin" was a huge flop, didn't even break the hot 100 or chart on rap. "the boss" was a top 20 hit but it peaked at 5 on rap and "magnificent" is currently at 6 on rap as well as 15 on r&b

"hustlin" and "push it" have awful chart numbers, there's just something about him that makes him a force as an album artist and not really as a singles one. not to mention that 50 has kept ross' name EVERYWHERE this year - and as they say there's no such thing as bad press.

i mean, yeah, good points. I hope you're right. I guess it's just that I haven't heard "Magnificent" once anywhere and the buzz around this album is very internet rap fan-heavy which never bodes well for sales. he did surprise everyone last time with his first week sales so we'll see

Rick Ross is, for whatever awful reason, a popular recording artist and a top priority at Def Jam. it's not like anyone on this album is out of his league, Kanye and Ne-Yo and Wayne will guest on any old major label bullshit.

rick ross is one of the only rappers who still does big numbers. kind of inexplicably
