Here's one of those Willner tracks -- from 1998, featuring Howie B! Of course.

Yeah, I found Hal Willner's presence intriguing, I've always liked his work, especially his Burroughs albums.
Meanwhile, I can't get the bibbibabka ditty out of my head now.

Wilner's done the last few Lou albums iirc, at least stretching back to Ecstasy. Wasserman's OK, but I'm disappointed that Lou didn't bring in the master of the fretless bass Fernando Saunders. Seems like a song called "Iced Honey" is just dying for a lil fretless bass solo.

xpost -- that was the goal.
― Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 October 2011 15:48 (fourteen years ago)
This is going from being 80% a Metallica record to being 80% a Lou Reed record.

i'm listening to the song "AKA Meltdown" by the band Tanner right now and it has a line that goes
"I WAS THE TABLE!"

it's really fun to read the "little dog" lyrics as if it's a t.i. song
― some dude, Saturday, 15 October 2011 00:33 (fourteen years ago)
kinda want to hear this:
[Hal Willner] has released one album under his own name: Whoops, I'm an Indian, which featured audio samples from 78 rpm records from the early-mid 20th century.

Mate, that record is boss btw. Well worth hunting down, a more subtle take on the whole Avalanches schtick, if you don't mind that sort of thing.

I honestly was not expecting the official LULU to sound so much like the Use Your Ilulusions.

Brandnburg Gate lyrics!!!!
I would cut my legs and tits offWhen I think of Boris Karloff and KinskiIn the dark of the moon
It made me dream of NosferatuTrapped on the isle of Doctor MoreauOh wouldn’t it be lovely
I was thinking Peter LorreWhen things got pretty gory as ICrossed to the Brandenburg Gate
I was feeling snappy perhaps I’d been nappingAnd I’d just ateA following heart can tear you apartOn a midnight to 8 shift
A graveyard romance can only give one chanceAs the tombstones weave and breathe
Feeling happy when my heart got beatingOn a Sunday afternoon
I dreamt of breezes going through the treesesAnd stars were still illumedI have three hearts that I keep apartTrying to relateTo normal feelings and the nightime reelingsAnd some absynthe drunk so late
The cook got drunk and all the whores they shrunkOnto the size of dessert platesBut me I’m happy cause I got my little nappyAnd some opium to set me straightI’m just a small town girl who wants to give it a whirlWhile my looks still hold me straight
Straight up to illusion and fantasy’s fusionOf reality mixed with drinkI’m just a small town girl who’s gonna give life a whirlLooking at the Brandenburg Gate

this is... seriously... not so bad...
not a trainwreck by any means
― Chris S, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)
i really doubt that will be the public consensus on this album

fruh-fruh-frustration
my lexicon
of hate.
― ⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)
or rather, it's like an *effective* trainwreck
and yeah it's actually kinda difficult for me to admit I find this decent, and I'm not even one to usually have "guilty pleasures"... but dammit, I can't lie, it actually works in a funny way (and not haha funny)
― Chris S, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:34 (fourteen years ago)
nah this record is fucking awesome
― mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:35 (fourteen years ago)

I am legit 100% in to "The View" but it took a few listens to get there.

― ⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:50 (fourteen years ago)
JH sounds honest to got awful on brandenburg gate. i always used to think he had a great voice for heavy music, but apparently he's a full-time crooner now?
― charlie h, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)
really do like the *idea* of this being good... it defies so many old crit/genre/tribal assumptions and rivalries
― Chris S, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)
last half of junior dad is legit beautiful
any recommendations on other modern/abstract/ambient string quartet shit like that?
― ⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 20 October 2011 02:12 (fourteen years ago)
Is "The View" about the television show, I can't decide.

this'd be taken much more seriously - and likely be considered Metallica's best since before the Black Album - if not for the jarring vocals, but even with, fuck
and yeah, Junior Dad is actually really beautiful... the hell...
― Chris S, Thursday, 20 October 2011 02:53 (fourteen years ago)
i cant help but feel like this would be a truly great record if only they weren't all sober :-\
― ⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 20 October 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, surprised at how much they really "let go" in this though, considering how late in the game it is
