Is SPIN really circling the drain?

SPIN has done a horrible job preserving its history. You gotta go to Google Books to read an old story.

sorry, i didn't mean "presence" as in, like, they literally have a web site that is updated. i mean in terms of hits and/or people going "i read this thing on spin.com today..."

I've never written for Spin, and I can't even remember the last time I read it (10 years ago, maybe?) but this is bad news for a lot of writer friends of mine

i just started writing for them so i'm sure they'll fold any day now

Ha, yeah--I wrote some reviews for Blender, a while back, and forgot to invoice so I could get paid. Then they folded, so I never did get paid for them.

the idea of having 'the right traffic-attracting writers' to keep a mag/site afloat is kind of laughable tbh

yeah it is -- it was mostly about getting there first, and SPIN.com did not get there first or second or third or fourth or fifth etc IMO

??? im not talking about people attracting readers by name recognition (although the Atlantic has proved that is a viable model at some level) but hiring people who ... know how to draw traffic. I mean, there are websites that do this. You don't have to 'be there first'!

obviously who's writing and what they're writing about is important, but i kinda feel like a site has to do a bunch of other things right in order for that writing to actually generate traffic, and Spin pretty much did all of those things wrong, so the quality of the writing barely enters into it

i mean sure, you can do something like firing the whole idolator staff and hiring some SEO robots, but i'm not sure if that's what SPIN is aiming for w/ their website

altho maybe it is idk -- if so, good luck to them
