this could be cool

i'm not sure if SPIN will ever have much if any presence on the web tho

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

"if any"? They do have a fairly frequently updated site now, but its a nightmare because of all the damn click-through listicle shit.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:29 (fourteen years ago)

SPIN has done a horrible job preserving its history. You gotta go to Google Books to read an old story.

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

sorry, i didn't mean "presence" as in, like, they literally have a web site that is updated. i mean in terms of hits and/or people going "i read this thing on spin.com today..."

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

oh yeah, thats totally otm

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:34 (fourteen years ago)

'will ever'? i mean i dont read spin & havent ever really but i dont see what's stopping them from having a web presence

dangobro (D-40), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

like, just hire ppl that draw traffic. there's no big trick to it

dangobro (D-40), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

I've never written for Spin, and I can't even remember the last time I read it (10 years ago, maybe?) but this is bad news for a lot of writer friends of mine

geeta, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

i just started writing for them so i'm sure they'll fold any day now

the-dream in the witch house (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

(that's what happened to blender)

the-dream in the witch house (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:46 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, yeah--I wrote some reviews for Blender, a while back, and forgot to invoice so I could get paid. Then they folded, so I never did get paid for them.

geeta, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:50 (fourteen years ago)

where are the taxpayer bailouts for print music mags

lol -- carles already works for grantland

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 20:36 (fourteen years ago)

the idea of having 'the right traffic-attracting writers' to keep a mag/site afloat is kind of laughable tbh

nəverDirty (some dude), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it is -- it was mostly about getting there first, and SPIN.com did not get there first or second or third or fourth or fifth etc IMO

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

??? im not talking about people attracting readers by name recognition (although the Atlantic has proved that is a viable model at some level) but hiring people who ... know how to draw traffic. I mean, there are websites that do this. You don't have to 'be there first'!

dangobro (D-40), Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

obviously who's writing and what they're writing about is important, but i kinda feel like a site has to do a bunch of other things right in order for that writing to actually generate traffic, and Spin pretty much did all of those things wrong, so the quality of the writing barely enters into it

nəverDirty (some dude), Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

i mean sure, you can do something like firing the whole idolator staff and hiring some SEO robots, but i'm not sure if that's what SPIN is aiming for w/ their website

altho maybe it is idk -- if so, good luck to them

yung huma (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 6 October 2011 01:41 (fourteen years ago)

its not an either/or thing

Caryn Ganz will replace online editor Mark Bautz, who is leaving the company.
Ganz, who has worked at Rollingstone.com and Yahoo, is joined by two other new hires, senior editor Christopher Weingarten and associate editor David Bevan. They’ll work on print and online, supporting Spin’s digital emphasis, said editorial director Charles Aaron.
“With the magazine going bimonthly,” Aaron said, “the website has to be of the same caliber and depth of the magazine. I think we’ve struggled with that in the past
