Belle and Sebastian – Expectations

Belle and Sebastian vs Tool, let's discuss

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

Salt-N-Pepa homage "Pushit" LOL

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

omg the aenema review...i remember reading that! i was 14, a die-hard tool fan, and i was like "fuck you Spin magazine for insulting my band!" i think i almost wrote an angry letter!

i had the excuse of being 14, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit that was almost ten years ago...

MY LIFE WHERE HAS IT GONE?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Now there's your Tool lyric.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

this thread is the gift that keeps on giving, though now I REALLY feel bad for pessimist, who, as far as I can tell, has done nothing to deserve such abuse. But maybe I'm just partial to him because his list o' favorite songs up there prompted me to d/l that black tambourine song (which I listen to on repeat in my car during my commute, it is so great).

I suppose I have nothing to say about tool.

askance johnson (sdownes), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's all right. I was really kind of angry back there, and maybe taking this band a bit more seriously than was quite proper. I'm not angry any more.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

Belle and Sebastian vs Tool, let's discuss

Belle and Sebastian need more songs about fisting.

Marmot 4-Tay (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

incidentally, the new stuff was way way way better live than i'd expected, as someone who hasn't really been very into 10000 days.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

10 000 Days is great! I think it's much better than Lateralus so far, and I really liked parts of Lateralus.

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 17 June 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm in love with "Right In Two". And "Wings For Marie" and "10,000 Days" too. Thats the kinda shit Tool does best nowadays.

Orange Pimp (Orange Pimp), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

I love this album as well, probably around number three so far this year. I don't like the way this album ends however, the last song is a waste of time.

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

this thread inspired me to relisten to aenima straight through for like the first time in about a year. god, i love that album. definitely tool's peak as far as i'm concerned.

10,000 days has grown on me a little bit, actually. it's not quite as solid as lateralus, but its got its own thing going.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

10,000 Days is definitely growing on me, but I've really had to try. I don't think I would have had the patience for it if it wasn't Tool. Still not sure how it stacks up against their other stuff yet, though.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Saturday, 17 June 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

I think Pessimist does make a good point with the Tool-Bill Hicks comparison (and Radiohead should go in there also). But hating art or an artist because of its fanbase and/or because of what it "means" to like them should not be reason enough for disliking the actual art or artist (although Pessimist says he has musical reasons for hating Tool).

Personally, lyrics don't matter that much to me when it comes to whether or not I like a song but I believe they should matter more to me and to other people. I recently came across this Eric Hoffer quote the other day and it makes a good point of saying that there might be hidden costs for a society that doesn't really care at all about the meanings behind their art...

"More significant than the fact that poets write abstrusely, painters paint abstractly, and composers compose unintelligible music is that people should admire what they cannot understand; indeed, admire that which has no meaning or principle."

I think a question that needs to be asked more often is "Why do people desire their lyrics to have meaning?" Why do people get disappointed when they find out that a song is only "catchy" and doesn't serve any larger purpose than that? Is it okay that most of us would have no qualms loving music with abhorrent messages, if they have any discernable messages at all?

The point at which I first heard "Editions of You" by Roxy Music coincides with the point at which I discovered that great lyrics and great music need not go hand in hand.

I like those lyrics!

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 17 June 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

That's interesting, because I rather like Radiohead, although not so much as I used to a few years ago. I can see what you're saying about their overall worldviews being kind of similar, but I think there are several differences -- the crassness, for one. Tool are relentlessly confrontational, vulgar, grimy, and generally unpleasant; Radiohead are certainly capable of vulgarity, but they employ shock lightly. I get the feeling I might or might not enjoy the company of Thom Yorke (by which I mean his on-stage persona), but his mere presence in a room, talking, wouldn't be sufficient cause for me to get out of said room in disgust and annoyance. I don't feel that way about Keenan.

Second of all, and perhaps way more important, while Radiohead's lyrics are generally suspicious of government et al. in a non-specific way, they rarely (never? probably not never, but I'm too tired to think) make overt reference to specific/established conspiracy theories. Whereas Tool, of course, buys into it wholesale, and says so directly.

Which is where I draw the line -- I have no problem with plausible suspicions of government -- what, somebody might lie about a war, or take bribes? Really? -- but to me, the hardcore conspiracy-theory guy, the kind of guy who's always talking about the Kennedy assassination or UFOs or the moon landing being fake, etc., against all the available evidence, is guilty of libel not only against the participants in said events, but against history itself -- against the notion that historical truth can be legitimately recorded and accountable to evidence.

So, to me, that kind of thing is abhorrent. I'm not saying this to debate the merits of conspiracy theory; I'm just saying that, for me, this is an ethical issue even if it weren't a musical one. (And I reiterate that I don't like Tool musically either, but that one wouldn't expect me to, because I don't like anything that sounds like Tool.)

I might compare it to religion -- practically everyone likes at least one band that happens to be religious, and maybe alludes to it glancingly from time to time. But if proselytizing becomes the focus of the music, well... maybe you can endure it if you happen to be of that religion to begin with. I wouldn't know.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Saturday, 17 June 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

Eric Hoffer sounds like a tool.

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Saturday, 17 June 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Loads of US/Europe Fall/Winter dates have been announced.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 29 July 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot all about Pessimist.

Marmot 4-Tay: I'll sip from his well without hesitation. (marmotwolof), Saturday, 29 July 2006 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

turns out i heard the new tool last night, and my reaction was a lot better than the first listens back in april or whatever. i'm still not digging it anywhere near as much 'aenima', which i completely agree is their best album by far, but it's better than i remember it being. 'jambi' in particular is a high point; wouldn't be out of place mixed in with their earlier stuff.

Emily B (Emily B), Saturday, 29 July 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I blinked and missed LA tickets, much to my displeasure. (Unless there's seats still open for the 2nd night, which could be the case.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 July 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahaha "prying open my third eye" magarofflez

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 13 August 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

secret code?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 13 August 2006 09:05 (nineteen years ago)

Neat technical article on recording the album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 August 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think chaki is talking about how you can sync Viginti Tres/Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days together Zaireeka style to make a remix. I downloaded an mp3 of that and it sounds pretty cool.
some info here:
http://spo0nman.blogspot.com/2006/05/more-on-10000-days.html

Unless there's more to it than that, chaki?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Tuesday, 15 August 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Any more secret code updates?

Still album of the year for me. Dear god I do love this band. Ended up relistening to all four full albums over Labor Day weekend.

has anyone else said the la-da-da-dee-da-da part on vicarious is fucking fantastic?

Yes. Or for instance when the whole band winds everything up perfectly on "Jambi" on the "I-might-as-well-be-Goooooooooooooonnnnnneee..." part (and, in complementary fashion, when Maynard returns suddenly with the 'shine on' bits).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

Ended up relistening to all four full albums over Labor Day weekend.

No Opiate or Salival? I never did get ahold of a copy of Salival. Am I missing much, anyone?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

Opiate doesn't do much for me anymore, title track aside I guess. It's too constricted. I do like Salival but it's a bit of a separate experience, and frankly it's definitely worth it for the DVD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

*checks Amazon*
Worth $90+ used? I'll wait for a reissue with (hopefully) more than five videos.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Buh. I seriously hadn't realized it was out of print! (I guess now that I remember a bit more it was always supposed to be a limited edition.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'll download the live tracks and watch my Quay Bros. tape.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

It could be re-released on December 31st, apparently. (but is that PAL/R2 or NTSC/R1 or no region?)

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

It appears (toolnavy forum) that both the US and Euro versions are going to be re-released around the end of December/beginning of January. But nobody's 100% sure, as nobody ever is with Tool.

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

MANY tix still available to PGH date.
and they're playing a considerably smaller space than last time.
this time, however, i won't waste the money to see em.

when Fantomas blows yr ass off stage, ya might wanna think about the meaning of that...

edde (edde), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

I HEARD THEY KICKED ASS IN BAKERSFIELD ALST NIGHT

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

I believe it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

i'll pass that along to the 2 people i know that still listen to them...

edde (edde), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well boo hoo hoo. So you don't like 'em and some others here do. So what?

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Worst band ever.

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that was useful! I don't know what got into me, being impressed by their music, lyrics and art like that. Thanks to your insightful post, I have now seen the light and will never listen to them again. Thank you!

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

He has turned on th bright lights, indeed! Let us now listen to Interpol.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

*seizes up, dies*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

(I've only recycled my post from May 14th, 2006, don't worry)

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

"Well boo hoo hoo. So you don't like 'em and some others here do. So what?"

don't cry for me, StanM! i'm doin just fine w/o em!
i FULLY realize that people DO ,not only, like em, but live/breathe/sleep/hypothosize/screw/eat cereal to em!!!

i simply don't see it...and man, i've tried.
lord knows, if one were to go by sheer volume of exposure, i should be a fan-o-matic. but, them, as with radiohead have not yielded fruits upon repeat ventures. they're all you, stanny boi!

edde (edde), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Salival has lots of great stuff on it. The live version of Pushit (now with haunting tablas!) is amazing, a great Peach cover that out does the original and of course, the hidden track "Maynard's Dick".
