Pink is a GRATE R&B singer & also white. No dispute there, I hope.

R&B-lite = Jill Scott & Craig David, only one of whom is good. R&B heavy = Maxwell, Tyrese, again only one of whom is good.

careerism + opportunism = why else wd you go into pop?

i like her (quite) as long as i don't have to look at her: her melisma = v. extremely anti-R&B

in what way is grindcore "threatening" (unless CD falls off building blah blah)?

mark s, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Opportunism = when people attempt to go overground, careerism = when people attempt to go (what their idea is of) underground. Careerism is because 'influence' (which helps career longevity) 90% of the time travels from underground to overground. If the artist has a really misguided idea of what 'underground' is, result = novelty song, if not (usually with help of bought-and-paid-for 'advisers'), artist hailed for re-invention, questing spirit etc., both of which are OK, but still careerism. Why else would anyone want to go into pop? Hopefully, because they wouldn't want to do anything even RESEMBLING 'work' ever again.

dave q, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No music is "threatening" per se (unless, as cited, the disc itself is used as a throwing star or something), but "Grindcore" (just as one example) is not as immediately mellifluous to the ear as most R&B (nor is it designed to be), and thus some might find it "threatening." Moreover, the sentiments expressed in your workaday Grindcore opus generally tend to be a bit more aggressive than those expressed by your average R&B crooner.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having a drum in your song /= R&B.

True.

Furtado classification: R&B, Trip-hop, Singer/songwriter, torch-song diva, country, bluegrass, jazz, opera, techno, heavy metal, roots rock, salsa, afropop, ska, chant, folk, etc... - naw

Hack.

Dave225, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who are you talking about, Mike Patton?

dave q, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like I said, she's a mutt. A mutt with no bite, at that.

David Raposa, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pink is a GRATE R&B singer & also white. No dispute there, I hope.

Count me out of the "Get this Party Started" gang. It sounds like one the most bland and predictable dance-pop songs I have heard in awhile. I mean, if theres one unforgivable sin of made for mtv pop, its when the song sounds dated. And Pink's single sounds at least 10 years old, i.e. standard beats and muddled guitar samples.

bnw, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, "Get The Party Started" couldn't have come out before '95 at the earliest!

I think if Alex in NYC wasn't scared of R&B he wouldn't complain all the time, therefore R&B = threatening.

Tim, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bite me.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Get The Party Started actually has a mid-90s feel to it, which is a good thing, but is a complete departure from Pink's first album.

Also, R&B = sex. sex = dangerous. According to greek philosophy, therefore R&B = dangerous.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah im with ally i thought the blurb that went with nelly furtado was that latino thing, no real connection to r'n'b stuff.

i dont think her music merits any particular scrutiny though. when i think of her, i think of the term 'vocalist'. not singer, just someone who can sing better than her mates, over music that is at the very centre of bland (although i dont like the pejorative here), er....normal, sort of end of 90's music, that in a way, defies description, because it has no distinguishing features/influences.

is nelly furtado well cutting edge then? i look forward to the next edition of the wire*

*this may be a contradiction in terms

ambrose, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Pink and was looking forward to hearing "Get the Party Started". But I have to say I agree with Byron, it didn't do much for me at all the one time I heard it. Then I found out that horrible woman from 4 Non Blondes wrote it. And now I can't even let it grow on me.

Arthur, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not only do I like the song, but I like lyrics which have crypto-double-meanings like out of a PkD novel or something. She's my "operator" and I can call her at will. She'll by my connection to the party line. Wow. I feel like Philby.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pink is a GRATE R&B singer & also white. No dispute there, I hope.

Dude, Pink is ass, she's almost as objectionable as Gwen Stefani, only not nearly so bad because Gwen is like pure evil or something. Pink's new song is just...argh. And her old songs weren't really much better when I think about it. I DON'T LIKE PINK!

How does R&B = sex? The only music I've ever had sex to is Duran Duran (I swear to god I'm not making that up, TWICE now, it's really fucked up). Oh, and I think Massive Attack once but that was terrible, all I could keep thinking about was "Why has he put on such wanky pretentious 'I'm too soph to put on R&B so I put on this obvious sex music instead'? Shouldn't he just be honest and put on Marvin Bloody Gaye since that's what he's thinking in his head?" No, I don't fancy the idea of having sex to R&B and I don't find anything sexy about the R&B I like.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The R&B I've been getting into lately -- not beat-driven post new jack stuff (which is teriffic, mind you) so much as smooth male crooner R. Kelly "ain't nothing wrong with a little bump and grind" is incredibly sexy. Aaliyah's lyrics on Rock The Boat are some of the dirtiest things I've ever heard.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, but I think Rock the Boat is like the most boring song on her album. And that video, they died for that? Ugh, it upsets me to think about it. R. Kelly is terrible, which is a shame cos he's got a lovely voice.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Agreed. It's like lame aerobics - "Rock the boat, people! Work the middle, oh yeah! Now change positions ... good, good, good! C'mon, STROKE IT! Yeah, do that stroke..."

However, I have problems with most slow-jams that aren't totally ridiculous (like R. Kelly's).

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally speak utter truth about R. Kelly; the best thing that man could do is stop writing music and sing other people's songs. In fact, the only R. Kelly-penned songs I can think of that I like are "Back And Forth" and "Contagious".

If "Rock The Boat" is one of the most boring songs on _Aaliyah_, I MUST HAVE THAT ALBUM.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So yes. I have a mission to win the ILX massive to the slow-jam nation. Watch out, because I'm plotting.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's nothing wrong with a slow jam. It's just that most of them are stupid.

Would it be impolite to ask about the status of the sex lives of posters who think of that as sex music?

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

music for sex != music which is sexy. Not always, at least.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Altho I have been driving in cars w/ friends and some particularly good slow jam comes on & we start y'know, looking at each-other like that at least for a moment. At the same point, if I invite some gurl up to my flat I'd feel dead goofy trying to do the whole slo-jam, couch, arm sneaking thing.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling, have you heard En Vogue's last album? Some lovely sumptuous slow jam stuff on there. I'm sure meanwhile the R Kelly might be good, but the only thing he ever charted for in Australia was 'I Believe I Can Fly'.

Tim, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*That* song is, of course, unspeakable, and don't start me on "The Storm Is Over Now", but I remember "Bump'n'Grind" being a hit in the UK (though I think it took a reissue to make it so) and it was and is very very good. I vaguely recall liking "You Remind Me Of Something" as well.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally is half-right about "Rock The Boat": it's a good song, but it could easily lose up to a minute or so and no-one would be the wiser. The same applies to "I Refuse" (probably my least favourite song on the album even if it occassionally it sounds fantastic, but at any rate certainly not "boring"). But Dan, why have you procrastinated? Even a fule could tell you that it's an excellent album.

Tim, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It is a good album, but actually Tim I have that problem with ALL of the tracks, they should be a bit shorter. Her songs have a tendency to keep going when clearly the steam is gone, almost like they were told "YOU HAVE TO FILL FIVE MINUTES OR ELSE!" or something equally silly by the execs and thus are doing it. It's not nearly as bad as Destiny's Child and their "We will repeat the chorus 10,000 times per song to make it longer than 2.5 minutes" thing, plus I think Aaliyah's best songs are better than DC's best songs, but it's still an issue.

Ally, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

obviously you idiots on this site do not understand the words musician or composition, there is more to music than lyrics you stupid people, listen to the instruments the diversity the tempos of each its more work than you idiots think it is, a muso myself, i know a revolutionary sound fusioned artist when i hear one.

oh hater, her personality is endearing, chirpy b-girl style.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

apparently she's all angry and down-with-love on this new record. guess the marriage didn't last very long.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't like Nelly too much but at least she had the sense to stay out of the way of this beat. MONSTER.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

It's like Jam & Lewis producing led zep's lost synth-rock masterpiece.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

i'm surprised at all the nelly-haters, this seems tailored to her style.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

That "I'm like a bird" song was being played by a certain radio station at the same time every morning every day for like 2 months at one point. And that was the only station they played at my work. I was one day away from driving my car to her house and giving her a piece of my mind.

I am the second robot version of me, Monday, 13 February 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

This sounds like Timbaland's Kenna, melodically.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Also, it had "soul" in the chorus, which is never good.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

I.e. the word "soul" not the quality.

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

This is great. But I liked Nelly's first album so yeah.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 13 February 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Apparently there is another song named "Promiscuous Girl" floating around.. anyone have it?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 13 February 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only person who thinks this sounds like a Gravy Train!!!! song?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

I hope.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Nelly ft. Timbaland - Promiscuous Girl. This is the version that's been on a few mixtapes.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

not that michael taylor is reading this but he's an idiot. imagine herc (black) didn't sample kraftwerk (white), no hip-hop. no music exists, for long, without some other culture peering in, changing, adding, expanding it, exploring.

the rock n roll nigga (the rock n roll nigga), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 08:17 (twenty years ago)

"Promiscuous Girl", the full version

so apparently nelly's next ablum is entirely produced by timbaland. the two first songs being great i can't wait to hear the rest (i don't really get the hate for nelly here... bah...even the presence of chris martin is not enough to turn me away from her !).

This profile thing focusses on uplift and her save the children efforts but doesn't say a lot re how this impacts her album musically. It also addresses her lyrical transition back to English from Spanish.

okay this Tiesto remix of "Thoughts" is wholly unnecessary

There was a thing in this mornings Metro about it.

Mark G, Monday, 24 September 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

Randall Roberts in the LA Times loves it:

On her fifth studio album, "The Spirit Indestructible," Furtado teams with superstar producer-songwriter Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Salaam Remi and Passion Pit founder Mike Angelekos to create a thick, jam-filled joyride with more emotional heft than all her peers save maybe Beyoncé. Madonna wishes she could make a record as vital and imaginative as even the lesser tracks on "Spirit."

really? they're not weak or obviously bad per se but there's nothing here as addictive, like need-to-hear-on-loop-for-foreseeable-future addictive, as half of loose. they're just okayish.
