Pretty sure the Good Dr. Bill loves this to pieces.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 June 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

The only time I ever even hear OF this song is when someone brings it up to make fun of the lyrics. I don't think I've ever actually heard it all the way through!

I recall that the album was all right. I reviewed it for Amazon.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 23 June 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

so what goes through your head when you post something like this? are you like "oh man, this is gonna be so hilarious! why don't I make a funny based on irony?! wait till the guys on ILM get a load of THIS! yessssss...OH! And I'll put "discuss" at the end to add even more flavor to my already laugh out loud post. God I love me."

latebloomer aka rap's yoko ono (latebloomer), Friday, 23 June 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

My theory when this song came out was that this had to have been some sort of viral Abercrombie marketing thing, since I couldn't imagine a bunch of guys caring particularly about what clothing brand his girl liked to wear, or even knowing enough about it to drop it oh-so-ironically in the lyrics.

Benefits of hearing this song 1000+ times on the radio: I'll never forget Larry Bird's number, or the name of the guy Michael J Fox played on Family Ties.

musically (musically), Friday, 23 June 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

The thing I remember most about this song was DEFINITELY the Abercrombie and Fitch ref. And yes, I assumed it was a creepy marketing move as well.

I also remember thinking, "This guy can't rap."

I absolutely do, yeah. More guaranteed to bring a smile to my face that almost any other song.

This thread made me revisit some other songs from the Summer of 1999 and I must say I still enjoy Tal Bachman's She's So High.

always confuse this song with "summertime" :

six months pass...
I downloaded this the other day and realized I hadn't actually heard it before, I'd just read about it. Pretty sweet.

I think around the time this song came out, Abercrombie and Fitch was definitely a hot brand, what with the controversial near-naked catalogue models, and partially because of that, it began to stand for a whole class of preppie teen fashion. So it doesn't seem all that implausible that a guy would be attracted to an "Abercrombie girl" -- I remember referring to people that way myself in the late '90s.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc do you live in an ice cave on pluto?

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 January 2007 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Jess, I spent much of the late '90s listening exclusively to indie rock, post-rock, and IDM. I was in college and either too busy or too much of a snob to pay attention to anything on the radio. I currently refer to this as my dark period.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

i suggest you download "mambo no. 5" next

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

and the collected works of shawn mullins

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I've heard both of those. Well, only "Lullaby," I guess.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

I've been trying to set up an interview with the lead singer of LFO for the past few months, and they keep pushing it back. He's supposedly working on some big project that will BLOW YOUR MIND.

Here's a good example, though: I pretty much missed the entire career of DMX. I've been informed that he was ubiquitous at one point.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

I remember the video for "Party Up." It's also on a few of my old mix cds, sprinkled with Evan and Jaron and Shaggy tracks.

(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You

I still have trouble believing this is really the title to a song.

baron kickass von awesomehausen (nickalicious), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard Xtina, LFO, Lou Bega, and Shawn Mullins. I must have downloaded "Steal My Sunshine" at some point -- esp. if there was some ILM 90s Poll -- but I couldn't hum it for you.

That's the second time I've linked to that song in the past twenty minutes.

Oh, "Steal My Sunshine" is on my iPod! Listening now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I like this. Still pretty sure I didn't hear it until 2004 at the earliest, though. iPod has it tagged as being from the "Go OST."

(Which, come to think of it, I saw in the theater, so maybe I did hear the song in 1999.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

This is one of those songs where I just couldn't get past the image of them. The whole "spoiled rich kid driving daddy's car" look.

Viz (Viz), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

i will never grow weary of mambo No 5.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

I used to hear that fucking cowbell from "Steal My Sunshine" in my nightmares.

baron kickass von awesomehausen (nickalicious), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

I mentioned "Mambo No. 5" in this article.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

what was the grungey-poppy-punk song where the guy kept saying he was sorry for a whole laundry list of things?

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

I had no idea B*witched were even heard of in the States

"Sorry 2004," by Ruben Studdard

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

it included:

1) getting drunk at an innapropriate time
2) having sex with the sister of whomever he was apologizing to
3) crashing through a window of some sort

i also seem to remember a lyric about a biker/motorcycle gang but its possible i'm making that up.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

and possibly some mention of seafood of some sort, possibly in the same line as motorcycle gang/ bikers.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno, but that sounds awesome.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

i ask because i remember it being all over the radio around the same time.

it sounded like a much more radio-friendly NOFX or Ugly Kid Joe ten years later.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

i also ask because the lyrics were horribly catchy and annoying but much preferable to summer girls.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

A-ha!:

Nerf Herder, "Sorry"

Sorry we broke up, sorry I missed you
Sorry I wanted only to kiss you
Sorry I promised to love you forever
made you feel guilty, oh when you left me
Sorry I showed up at your party
Sorry I drank up all the Bacardi
Sorry I puked up on your bedspread
Sorry I wanted to be your boyfriend again
(chorus) What can I do?
It's over, it's over, it's over, it's over
What can I do? I am the loser.
Sorry I saw you and I heard birds sing
Sorry I touched you and I heard bells ring
Sorry I jacked off outside of your window
while you were sleeping
I thought you'd never know
Sorry I showed up at your wedding
Sorry I tried so hard to get in
Sorry I screwed up your picture
Sorry I had sex with your sister
(chorus) What can I do?
It's over, it's over, it's over, it's over
What can I do? I am the loser.
Sorry we broke up, sorry I missed you
Sorry I wanted only to kiss you
Sorry I promised to love you forever
made you feel guilty, oh when you left me
Sorry I showed up at your dinner
Sorry I said those things to your father
Sorry I crashed through your window on acid
Sorry I made a mess, sorry I bled to death
(chorus) Repeat 2x

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 January 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Last surviving LFO member has some thoughts about how talented rapper Rich Cronin was:

The In Memoriam montage in the following year’s Grammys did not include a mention. “I don’t like to focus on those who don’t respect us, I like to focus on the fans,” Fischetti says. “But it hurt. Rich Cronin was literally one of the best rappers alive, which is not to say he’d beat Eminem in a freestyle battle. But if you gave him a mic and beat, he could hold his own with anyone, with Biggie, anybody. That kid was so creative.”
