"I Love You" from Archaeology. Amazing pop tune that approximates the softer love songs of the Fabs circa A Hard Days Night, yet can't be traced back to a specific song (tough "And I Love Her" comes closest to an origin point).

"Hold My Hand"

"I Must Be In Love"

"I Must Be In Love" = my fave too

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 26 January 2006 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Well, right now I'm singing to myself:

"Let's be natural".

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 January 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

I second "Let's Be Natural" but I have to mention Utopia's Deface The Music, the Rutles' slightly more sarky American cousin, because it too is great.

Deluxe (Damian), Thursday, 26 January 2006 10:26 (twenty years ago)

"I Must Be In Love" thirdeded.

Madam, I Am Not a Doctor (noodle vague), Thursday, 26 January 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I managed to pick up a Rutles EP with picture sleeve in a antiques shop for £1! I was a happy man, especially as it means that I've been able to spin I Must Be In Love and Cheese & Onions while DJing.
IMBIL is my favourite. It's so great. "I feel good, I feel bad, I feel happy I feel sad, Am I in love? (Aah ahh) I must be in love?"
Galaxie 500's cover of C&O is gorgeous.

stew!, Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

And Barry Wom's Living In Hull is superior to the Ringo song it rips off, Don't Stand Me By.

stew!, Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Living in Hope. But, yeah.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

So it is Living In Hope. It's just Barry Wom's mushmouthed delivery made me think Hull for some reason. I quite like the idea of that, although it changes the meaning of the song. What hope lies in Hull?

stew!, Thursday, 26 January 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

..he didn't have a lot of what you might call luck, but he had a lot of Get Up And Go....

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I got the DVD for Xmas!

I still don't think it's very funny, it's kind of sweet and maudlin.

...and compare with Beatles' Anthology. The attention to detail is mindblowing in parts.

Get the DVD, rock! I have it and watch it all the time.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I do believe I will. The fake ads for other Rutle Corps records, on the inner sleeve of the orig. vinyl, are fantastic. Were those included in CD or DVD releases?

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Galaxie 500's cover of C&O is gorgeous.

what is this on?

i'll take 'let's be natural'

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Not on the CD, but on the DVD yes I think. In fact, I thought somebody was going to mention that Barry Wom song "When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsman From Hull," or whatever it's called, as being their favorite Rutle's song. But maybe that's where the Hull upthread came from.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Galaxie 500's cover of C&O is gorgeous.

It was originally on Rutles Highway Revisited .. It was also included in the Gal500 box, if not elsewhere.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

"But maybe that's where the Hull upthread came from." Ah, that may well be it, I knew there was a Hull in there somewhere.

The Galaxie 500 cover is on their b-sides and rarities LP as well.
I once saw that tribute on vinyl and regret not buying it. Had Butthole Surfers on it too I think...

stew!, Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Rutles is kind of over-rated, but if I had to puick a fave I guess it would be "I Love You" or maybe "We've Arrived! And To Prove It, We're Here" both from Archaeology.
Deluxe's recommendation to search Deface The Music is seconded. Never trying to be "funny" gives it a huge advantage over Rutle stuff, and the songs are generally way better too.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

The rarities disc from the Galaxie 500 box has been rereleased as a stand-alone disc titled Uncollected. You can find "Cheese and Onions" there if you don't have the box (which is long out of print).

On the subject of great Rutles covers, I really like the Pussywillows' version of "Hold My Hand" (also on Rutles Highway Revisited).

James, Thursday, 26 January 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't think the trying-to-be-funny of the Rutles is a problem, as it seems to already be there in the Beatles themselves.

Thirded! I Just Want To Touch You is a corker of an opening track.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 27 January 2006 09:33 (twenty years ago)

Rutles DVD (+ Lightning Bolt DVD + Electric Masada 2CD) on their way. Excitement!

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Todd Rundgren wrote "I Just Want to Touch You" for the movie Roadie (you know, the Meatloaf vehicle). It was rejected by the producers for being to "Beatlesy." To say the least.

James, Friday, 27 January 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Piggy In The Middle.

Love the Rutles film, but laugh harder at the old Mr. Show sketch about the Fad 3 (Beatles doppelganger/contemporaries who produce only photographs and not a note of music.) "Today, Ken divides his time between the sales floor of the department store where he is employed, and the break room. He's said he would be willing to do a reunion photo, but only under any circumstances." - classic.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:53 (twenty years ago)

That Mr. Show thing was great!

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Um um um.... wow, I'm torn on this one. I think "Cheese and Onions" is probably the best one in terms of nailing the John impression while not clearly being just a rewrite of a single existing song (although, as discussed on the "your favorite fictional band" thread, "Get Up And Go" pretty much betters "Get Back" in some ineffable way). "Cheese and Onions" is actually catchy and memorable entirely on its own terms, and the whole "man and machine" section is really quite inspired.

For unabashed soundalikes, "I Must Be In Love."

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Friday, 27 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone ever seen "Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch" ? Reviews are that it's horrible, which I would have predicted.

Also, anyone who loves the Rutles that wasn't alread familiar with "The Compleat Beatles" ..? I think the Rutles movies is so much funnier, seeing it as a ripoff of an existing Beatles documentary.

six years pass...

the ween thread made me think of listening to the Rutles

this is really great

Rendezvous is a great song...also a bit of subtle Kinks parody in the songwriting

Elrond Hubbard (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

Gottta say "Between Us" for that downward-stepping verse but yeah most of them are up there with the best Beatles imitators. Actually "I Must Be in Love" may be my favorite for the way they sing 'luv'. The perfect Beatles accent!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

"unfinished words" is great....this is weird...it sort of exceed "parody" in a way i can't explain
