but pretty much everything the man touches turns to gold. would recommend the "good vibes" compilation that blood & fire put out, since you've already got in the light/dub. the title track ("good vibes") is gold.
strangely his work with massive attack is my least favorite stuff of his - guess it's just too much of a good thing (that cover of light my fire sends chills down my spine, and not in a good way)
― rentboy (rentboy), Sunday, 3 October 2004 10:25 (nineteen years ago) link
dancehall style OTM also "sings for you & I"
haven't heard massive attack collabs but i am... wary.
― ian, Monday, 11 June 2007 04:19 (seventeen years ago) link
they're not bad
― lfam, Monday, 11 June 2007 04:52 (seventeen years ago) link
but once you've heard the orig 'spying glass' you never need the massive attack mix
― lfam, Monday, 11 June 2007 04:53 (seventeen years ago) link
is all of his studio one stuff on good vibes or am i misreading that? cos that's the stuff i want to start with.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link
oh, wait, i think i'm stupid. i guess the "skylarking" i had heard previously wasn't the studio one album, which is what i think i'm looking for.

Man, the original "Spying Glass" is A+.

AT work.
Government Land is a tune.
Someone suggested destroying Everwhen upthread, which is a pity as it's the only track from 100th Window I love.

Dance Hall Style is essential. Get Wise, Pure Ranking, are great. Feel Good All Over comp is great. Showcase is good.

"In The Light" is great, but the compilation "The Prime Of Horace Andy" doesn't have a bad track on it as far as I'm concerned.
Incidentally I love the idiosyncrasies on the song "In The Light", the way he pronounces "shining bright" as "shaynan brot" etc.

this one's the first comp i picked up when my obsession began. never disappoints

you need "natty dread a weh she want" -- the 12", or even better, the compilation of the same name, with lots of heavy lovers/roots crossover.
also his early studio one LPs, including the first of many named "skylarking," are pretty great, even with the dodgy covers (of e.g. cat stevens).

"Besides "In the Light," what is worth checking out?"
Good Vibes is my favorite other thing by a pretty wide margin (disco mixes!!!).

I mean as in "bad music" not "was he ever a naughty boy?"
Not that I've heard.

I don't love everything he did with Massive Attack, but his JA stuff is remarkably consistent.

I'm sitting here listening to Horace Andy tracks on youtube and an ad for BIG DOGS CLOTHING popped up. Good thing I'm not actually high or I might've actually ordered some.

Though I’ve been listening to more and more dub and roots reggae in the last few years, I wasn’t familiar with Horace Andy until “Dance Hall Style” was noted on the Pitchfork best of the 80s list earlier this week. Now I’ve heard three of his albums from that decade and really love all three of them. Looking forward to going backward into some of the earlier albums.

Can't get enough Horace Andy. Though I was always pedantically irked by the unnecessary detail of 'There's a man that lives next door, in my neighbourhood, in my neighbourhood'. Where else could 'next door' be?
