I'm usually not much for futile "let's all press like on facebook/not watch a tv show we weren't gonna watch anyway" protests, but after that "sorry we ignored chris brown for two years but he victimized us" quote there is no way in hell i'm watching the grammys tonight

da croupier, Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:02 (fourteen years ago)

all crazy shit will be watched after the fact on shitty non-official youtubes

da croupier, Sunday, 12 February 2012 13:03 (fourteen years ago)

That's normally what I do with the grammys anyway, but that quote is appalling. It makes me sick thinking about how many people have shrugged his assault off.

Nicole, Sunday, 12 February 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

that article is right fucking on.

little clouds of citrus spritz as i peel (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 February 2012 19:27 (fourteen years ago)

If people just turned off the TV when Chris Brown came on & didn't turn it back on for five or ten minutes, it'd make a huge difference in how the Grammys think about this stuff in the future. However, the opposite will happen: everybody watches, everybody talks about it. Whether they talk positively or negatively doesn't mean anything; the name of the game is attention & eyeballs. So all the thinkpieces/tweets/etc are a net win for the Grammys & for Chris Brown, imo.

if you have a nielsen box

da croupier, Sunday, 12 February 2012 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

if you don't, however, publicly admonishing the grammys with thinkpieces and tweets is probably your best shot at having any influence

da croupier, Sunday, 12 February 2012 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

good piece

I feel bad for lol'ing at the Taylor Swift line at the end

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:22 (fourteen years ago)

(partly because whoo-eee if he had beat a white woman you can bet your ass this would not have blown over like it did)

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

Well no shit

Hell, if he had beat a black woman born in the US, he would have gotten more flack than he did

I heard Ike Turner on the radio today

I guess Ike Turner's career was actually destroyed though

plee help i am lookin for (crüt), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

Ike Turner's career was not destroyed by his wife-beating tho

I'm Not Okay With Hello Giggles Being The Voice Of Reason And I'm Not Sure Why You Are

some dude, Monday, 13 February 2012 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

i was just thinking about the ike turner thing - "ike and tina" may be used as a jokey punchline every month or so by every rapper out there, but it's actually because of that that his name has become a byword for domestic violence to me (as someone unfamiliar with his actual music). which seems just, in a way. to have an entire generation associate you not with your music or accomplishments but the fact that you were an abuser.

Hell, if he had beat a black woman born in the US, he would have gotten more flack than he did

ugh yes i'd forgotten all the "caribbean women have fiery tempers" talk at the time.

i guess the grammys thing shouldn't be that surprising - even itt there are a ton of people who obviously just want to get back to liking chris brown hits without having to think about what he did or more pertinently how their acceptance is part and parcel of the fundamental disrespect for women that the blog post i linked discusses.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Monday, 13 February 2012 10:01 (fourteen years ago)

also, like, it's 2012. this is similar to the argument i made re: odd future and homophobia. just cuz something was accepted 10 or 20 years ago really doesn't mean it should be accepted now.

and w/r/t the argument that no one should be punished forever for a mistake they make - i agree, and this comment from the blog post sums up my response -

If I am unaware of his humanitarian actions, or large donations toward shelters for women who have to go into hiding because it’s kind of getting hard to walk around with a broken jaw – then someone please, point that out. If he is providing counseling to young men & saying “Hey look what I did that one time, and how out of control things got, and how I am not ever going to be okay with it so this is why you cannot ever let that happen in your life” – then maybe there is something to letting him just movin’ on with his happy little life and career.

I know next to nothing about Chris Brown apart from the fact that he beat-up R; is he that big commercially / awesome musically that the Grammies absolutely HAVE to lick his arse? I don't knwo that I've ever heard one of his tunes.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 13 February 2012 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

he is big commercially, yes.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Monday, 13 February 2012 10:47 (fourteen years ago)

not so big that they HAVE to give him awards or let him perform though; i mean he's basically on equal footing with trey songz these days and you didn't see TR on the grammys last night

i find those buzzfeed posts to be really shitty

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 February 2012 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, buzzfeed's a pretty awful source.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 13 February 2012 14:20 (fourteen years ago)

those tweets are so horrifying i don't want to believe they're real

some dude, Monday, 13 February 2012 14:21 (fourteen years ago)

Between this and the Unilad thing I suddenly feel v.old and out of touch with young people.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 13 February 2012 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

idk, we've all seen the shitty things that chris brown's tween stans have posted over the past couple of years; the worst thing about those tweets is that they're all too believable.

i blame the parents. where the FUCK are those girls' mothers and fathers?

some dude, Monday, 13 February 2012 14:28 (fourteen years ago)

it's like those girls don't even know what getting punched in the face actually means. I don't know what part of it they don't understand but somehow they don't seem to get it.
