I can't help but be reminded of all the pre-album anticipation many of us had years ago for the Neil Young/Pearl Jam album which everyone knew was going to be the shit

In 30 years, will music snobs pretend to like "Lulu" the way they pretend to like "Metal Machine Music?"
― thirdalternative, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 13:05 (fourteen years ago)
What's this "pretend to like Metal Machine" crap? I love Metal Machine; even used to fall asleep to it when I worked weird hours. It's white noise with style.
Maybe I'm not a music snob and thus escape your comment, but I think it's only snobs and weirdos that have even heard Metal Machine Music in the first place.
I'm comfortable with being a weirdo, by the way.

yeah, MMM is pretty listenable. first time i heard it, i thought i'd have to turn it off after a minute, but it can be kind of a relaxing record.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 14:42 (fourteen years ago)
Metal Machine Music is indeed awesome.
I do not hear the Lungfish similarities by the way. I get the idea of the similarities: spoken-sung vocals, list-like lyrics (in the chorus especially), and a riffy, repetitive backing, but sonically and execution-wise it sounds nothing like Lungfish. It sounds like if someone asked me to make up a slow Metallica riff off the top of my head and tack on some Lou vocals with a time limit of 30 minutes for the whole exercise.

There's a real meta "worship someone who despises you" thing here, but I can't tell from which direction it's going.

i honestly do think this song gets better if you listen to it a shitload of times, like at first you're taken aback but then it's like you start to understand and accept that this is what music should be like...it's like when you moved away to college or something, i never want to go back

i was wondering -- is this going to be lou reed's biggest selling album? just because metallica has such a die-hard fanbase. like, if metallica put put out their own new album right now, it'd probably debut at #1?
― tylerw, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)
It will definitely be Lou Reed's biggest album.

yeah, especially considering how well metallica does in worldwide markets, europe, south america etc, i can't imagine even the poorest selling metallica album wouldn't out-do transformer (which i'm assuming is lou's biggest seller over time) by a large margin

Apparently I was the one who broke the news to Dave Mustaine that this is coming out the same day as the new Megadeth record.

I'm writing an article on them, so I don't want to give away spoilers. I will say, he sounded pretty unhappily surprised for a moment, but he recovered quite admirably.

I'm gonna guess that the people buying new Megadeth records are not the same people who will be buying Loutallica
― unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)
Seriously?
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)
I'm sure there's absolutely no overlap between Metallica and Megadeth fans.
I'll defer to other metaller-heads-than-I but yeah I would think that if you're buying new Megadeth records in this day and age you (correctly imho) gave up on Metallica a long time ago
