scion has it's paws up in a lot of that scene.

I know, I instinctively cringe when I see that sponsorship on things but this is.... not mixed by some random dude and has some decent music?
― so i had sex with a piñata (mh), Monday, 26 September 2011 19:56 (twelve years ago) link
I wasn't aware of what they sponsored now, but from past experience and being bombed by horrible promo cds I have a lot of preconceptions
not denigrating, just saying, it's a line-up i'd expect with scion's involvement. - the artists scion selects to do work with are pretty good and it's cool that they setup events/parties (albeit they tend to be underpromoted on scion's part at times). issue with promo discs is usually people consciously leaving their lesser work for them (can't blame them).
― fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 20:00 (twelve years ago) link
That's cool, I just remember some dodgy promo discs being thrown around when Scion first appeared as a brand to the point where there were stacks of them sitting in every record store, at every event, and you'd get two or three at a music festival.

yeah i can't really think of another company that's been as knee-deep in the sponsoring of electronic music. i remember when it first came out it was the offish "rave car" or whatever

Red Bull Music Academy!

EXCEPT FOR RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY
they sort of gloss over as they same in my head "SHINY! RAVE!" when i'm not thinking about it
― fauxmarc, Monday, 26 September 2011 20:43 (twelve years ago) link
and actually i hadn't realized rbma has been around for as long as it has dealing in these kinds of (the non-bro-y) producers

Didn't Adult Swim have some sort of involvement with Major Lazer and Flying Lotus videos in recent times? That tracklisting does look rather good.

One of the Tim and Eric guys directed videos for both, I believe.

Someone I don't know on youtube just sent me a link to: "Laura Warwick - Losing You (Chill Dubstep Remix by S.J.P)"
Should I listen to it?

I have no idea who that is, what it is, etc.

Am I the only person who finds it amusing that people are just now realizing that Skrillex collaborated with Korn, when the song's been out since April?

James Blake grousing in pitchfork:
“I think the dubstep that has come over to the US, and certain producers-- who I can't even be bothered naming-- have definitely hit upon a sort of frat-boy market where there's this macho-ism being reflected in the sounds and the way the music makes you feel. And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It's a million miles away from the ethos of it. It's been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that's not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I'm concerned.”

who I can't even be bothered naming
strawman argument

sissy argument

sexist argument

Sounds like an excuse for the weak, anaemic "blubstep" of his own album.

i don't know many dubstep fans irl, but it never really struck me as a genre that had an exorbitant amount of female fans

also from what i can tell, girls really like stadium dubstep raves
james blake just offtm in general

I'd imagine Skrillex has more female fans than James Blake does. Granted, he obviously has a lot more fans in general

northern cali heads <3 nugstep
Feel like Blake was on the right track for a second and then totally lost it... Someone on twitter wrote that maybe dubstep is our nu-metal. But maybe it's more like metal, i.e. a broad genre with tons of shitty stuff and a few gems. And dismissing it entirely is like saying "I don't like metal (or electronic music, or rap, or whatever)". I mean, I can understand not liking any of it, but dismissing all of it because of bro-step icons like Skrillex, who are really just continuations of 2k5 screamo, is ridiculous.
― HANDSTAND, Thursday, 29 September 2011 19:21 (twelve years ago) link
could it be like saying "i don't like trance" because really i'm always fine with saying that

with this Skrillex/Korn collab I almost want to call it (or Skrillex's stuff at least) "mall-step" now

on an unrelated note, saw a twink wearing silver aviators, diesel jeans, a red bandana and a black t-shirt w/ LISTEN TO DUBSTEP printed on it in silver foil, in a crowded gay bar at 4 pm on a saturday. they were not playing DUBSTEP at the bar.

i'd rather listen to james blake than skrillex so i agree with james blake (i don't really like his music much)
there are definitely massive amounts of female dubstep fans, all born after 1990
― witchho (zachlyon), Thursday, 29 September 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link
also the whole "LISTEN TO DUBSTEP" thing is weird, because it really is all so interchangeable to just call it by its genre (LISTEN TO R&B) except what the people who listen to it think of as "dubstep" is just a tiny thing compared to everything that's ever used that name, w/r/t the range of sound etc it covers. weird to me how LISTEN TO DUBSTEP people have no idea who like katy b is, or any of the other major artists of the past decade. do brostep bros have any british presence or is it mostly america?
― witchho (zachlyon), Thursday, 29 September 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link
just started teaching sound engineering / music production to mostly 18-19-year-olds in Dublin. They are all into "dubstep", meaning Skrillex - several different students have recommended his stuff to me. Not sure what other dubstep they're into. they all wanna know how to make wobble basslines.
My class is 95% male so can't comment on Skrillex's appeal to female fans. James Blake on the other hand - he was standing beside us at the bar after his last gig here and there was a steady stream of girls approaching him/posing for photos etc
